Introduction:
Prison population is affected by tuberculosis (TB) due to prison overcrowding. This situation reflects an inequity in health, understood as an unfair and avoidable difference between individuals and populations.Objective:
To estimate the conditions of prison overcrowding as health inequity in prison population suffering from TB in Colombia during 2018.Materials and methods:
This is an ecological study to estimate inequities at the national level in prison population through the use of the World Health Organization methodology for the measurement of inequalities. Based on data from the public health surveillance system, the incidence of TB was taken as an indicator and the percentage of overcrowding as an equity stratifier. Simple and complex measures of inequality were calculated.Results:
The relative inequality between the lowest and highest quintiles of crowding showed that TB incidence among prison population with the highest crowding was 1.92 times that of the group with the lowest crowding. The inequality index identified an excess of 724 TB cases per 100,000 among those with the highest concentration of overcrowding. The health concentration index was -0.121, which shows that the incidence was concentrated in the group with the most overpopulation.Conclusion:
In Colombia, prison population in overcrowded conditions and suffering from TB has to face unfair and avoidable inequalities as compared with those not living in these conditions. Policies are required to reduce overcrowding and improve living conditions in prisons. 相似文献87.

Background
Attention-Deficit/Hiperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent disorder, but its neuroanatomical circuitry is still relatively understudied, especially in the adult population. The few morphometric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies available to date have found heterogeneous results. This may be at least partly attributable to some well-known technical limitations of the conventional voxel-based methods usually employed to analyze such neuroimaging data. Moreover, there is a great paucity of imaging studies of adult ADHD to date that have excluded patients with history of use of stimulant medication.Methods
A newly validated method named optimally-discriminative voxel-based analysis (ODVBA) was applied to multimodal (structural and DTI) MRI data acquired from 22 treatment-naïve ADHD adults and 19 age- and gender-matched healthy controls (HC).Results
Regarding DTI data, we found higher fractional anisotropy in ADHD relative to HC encompassing the white matter (WM) of the bilateral superior frontal gyrus, right middle frontal left gyrus, left postcentral gyrus, bilateral cingulate gyrus, bilateral middle temporal gyrus and right superior temporal gyrus; reductions in trace (a measure of diffusivity) in ADHD relative to HC were also found in fronto-striatal-parieto-occipital circuits, including the right superior frontal gyrus and bilateral middle frontal gyrus, right precentral gyrus, left middle occipital gyrus and bilateral cingulate gyrus, as well as the left body and right splenium of the corpus callosum, right superior corona radiata, and right superior longitudinal and fronto-occipital fasciculi. Volumetric abnormalities in ADHD subjects were found only at a trend level of significance, including reduced gray matter (GM) in the right angular gyrus, and increased GM in the right supplementary motor area and superior frontal gyrus.Conclusions
Our results suggest that adult ADHD is associated with neuroanatomical abnormalities mainly affecting the WM microstructure in fronto-parieto-temporal circuits that have been implicated in cognitive, emotional and visuomotor processes. 相似文献88.

The increase in severity of droughts associated with greater mortality and reduced vegetation growth is one of the main threats to tropical forests. Drought resilience of tropical forests is affected by multiple biotic and abiotic factors varying at different scales. Identifying those factors can help understanding the resilience to ongoing and future climate change. Altitude leads to high climate variation and to different forest formations, principally moist or dry tropical forests with contrasted vegetation structure. Each tropical forest can show distinct responses to droughts. Locally, topography is also a key factor controlling biotic and abiotic factors related to drought resilience in each forest type. Here, we show that topography has key roles controlling biotic and abiotic factors in each forest type. The most important abiotic factors are soil nutrients, water availability, and microclimate. The most important biotic factors are leaf economic and hydraulic plant traits, and vegetation structure. Both dry tropical forests and ridges (steeper and drier habitats) are more sensitive to droughts than moist tropical forest and valleys (flatter and wetter habitats). The higher mortality in ridges suggests that conservative traits are not sufficient to protect plants from drought in drier steeper habitats. Our synthesis highlights that altitude and topography gradients are essential to understand mechanisms of tropical forest''s resilience to future drought events. We described important factors related to drought resilience, however, many important knowledge gaps remain. Filling those gaps will help improve future practices and studies about mitigation capacity, conservation, and restoration of tropical ecosystems. 相似文献

A novel role of melatonin was unveiled, using immortalized human keratinocyte cells (HaCaT) as a model system. Within a time window compatible with its circadian rhythm, melatonin at nanomolar concentration raised both the expression level of the neuronal nitric oxide synthase mRNA and the nitric oxide oxidation products, nitrite and nitrate. On the same time scale, a depression of the mitochondrial membrane potential was detected together with a decrease of the oxidative phosphorylation efficiency, compensated by glycolysis as testified by an increased production of lactate. The melatonin concentration, ~ nmolar, inducing the bioenergetic effects and their time dependence, both suggest that the observed nitric oxide-induced mitochondrial changes might play a role in the metabolic pathways characterizing the circadian melatonin chemistry. 相似文献

Most physiological processes in mammals are synchronized to the daily light:dark cycle by a circadian clock located in the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus. Signal transduction of light‐induced phase advances of the clock is mediated through a neuronal nitric oxide synthase‐guanilyl cyclase pathway. We have employed a novel nitric oxide‐donor, N‐nitrosomelatonin, to enhance the photic synchronization of circadian rhythms in hamsters. The intraperitoneal administration of this drug before a sub‐saturating light pulse at circadian time 18 generated a twofold increase of locomotor rhythm phase‐advances, having no effect over saturating light pulses. This potentiation was also obtained even when inhibiting suprachiasmatic nitric oxide synthase activity. However, N‐nitrosomelatonin had no effect on light‐induced phase delays at circadian time 14. The photic‐enhancing effects were correlated with an increased suprachiasmatic immunoreactivity of FBJ murine osteosarcoma viral oncogene and period1. Moreover, in vivo nitric oxide release by N‐nitrosomelatonin was verified by measuring nitrate and nitrite levels in suprachiasmatic nuclei homogenates. The compound also accelerated resynchronization to an abrupt 6‐h advance in the light:dark cycle (but not resynchronization to a 6‐h delay). Here, we demonstrate the chronobiotic properties of N‐nitrosomelatonin, emphasizing the importance of nitric oxide‐mediated transduction for circadian phase advances.
