South America lost around 52 genera of mammals during a worldwide event known as the Late Quaternary Extinction episode. More than 80% of South American mammals weighing > 44 kg succumbed. Analysis of the megafaunal extinction chronology in relation to human arrival and major climate changes have revealed slightly different extinction patterns in different eco‐regions of the continent, highlighting the importance of detailed regional analysis in order to understand how the possible drivers of extinction operated. Here we present an analysis of the megafaunal extinction in the Última Esperanza (UE) area of southwestern Patagonia, Chile. We have compiled a comprehensive chronology of megafaunal extinctions and earliest human occupation between 18–7 cal ka BP, based on radiocarbon dates from published literature. We calculated confidence intervals using the GRIWM method to estimate the times of human arrival and megafaunal local extinctions, and then compared these events to the timing of major climate and vegetation changes, fire frequency increase, and the Reclús volcanic eruption. Our results suggest that a combination of human impacts and climate–vegetation change drove megafaunal extinctions in the UE area, with the balance of factors being taxon specific; the volcanic eruption does not seem to have exacerbated extinctions. Competition between humans and mega‐carnivores seems to be the most plausible cause for the extinction of the mega‐carnivores. Coexistence of humans with extinct horses, extinct camels, and mylodonts for several thousand years rules out a scenario of blitzkrieg overkill of megafauna by humans. The transition of vegetation from cold grasslands to Nothofagus forests corresponds with the disappearance of Hippidion saldiasi and Lama cf. owenii. The later full establishment of Nothofagus forests and an increasing fire frequency coincided with the disappearance of mylodonts. A climate‐driven reduction of open environments plausibly reduced herbivore's populations making them susceptible to local extinction.  相似文献

The genus Hypochaeris has a recent evolutionary history caused by long‐distance dispersal in conjunction with adaptive radiation in the South American continent. Hypochaeris lutea is a perennial herb that grows mostly at altitudes of around 1000 m in cold swamps of the southern regions of Brazil. We investigated the amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) in 270 individuals representing 11 Brazilian populations of H. lutea to elucidate the population genetic structure of this species. The frequencies of polymorphic loci and gene diversity ranged from 83.42% to 91.66% and from 0.26 to 0.34, respectively. Analysis of molecular variance revealed that most of the genetic variability was found within (76.67%) rather than among (23.3%) populations, agreeing with the pattern of genetic distribution within and among populations observed in other allogamous species of Hypochaeris. A Mantel test showed no correlation between genetic and geographic distances when all populations were considered. Simulations performed using a Bayesian approach consistently identified two clusters with different admixture proportions of individuals, as also revealed by a UPGMA dendrogram of populations. The pattern of genetic structure observed in H. lutea is consistent with a process of successive colonization events by long‐distance dispersal resembling the rapid and recent radiation that has been proposed to explain the origin of the South American species of Hypochaeris.  相似文献

Ants co‐occur with herbivorous thrips in several tropical plants, but their interactions are largely unexplored. Should thrips be deterred by ants, a positive effect of ants on plant fitness might be expected. Here, by using an experimental study design with ant‐present and ant‐excluded treatments, we investigated the influence of Camponotus blandus on Pseudophilothrips obscuricornis abundance and herbivory in three extrafloral nectaried species: Banisteriopsis malifolia, B. laevifolia and B. stellaris. In addition, we examined the effect of thrips herbivory on flower set and fruit development and dispersion. Thrips abundance and herbivory were higher on ant‐present stems of B. malifolia and B. laevifolia, where thrips managed to escape from ants by hiding in between clusters of flower buds (thygmotaxis behaviour). In B. stellaris the results were the opposite, as flower bud clusters did not offer hiding places, so thrips were unable to hide from ants; thus both thrips abundance and herbivory were lower on ant‐present stems. Thrips herbivory had no significant effect on flower and fruit set, but samaras (V‐shaped winged fruits of Malpighiaceae) attacked by thrips presented severe distortions and asymmetries. This caused damaged fruits to be dispersed closer to the mother plant, whereas uninjured fruits were dispersed further away. This study is evidence that ant–plant–herbivore systems have variable outcomes depending on the species involved, their behaviour and the plant structure under consideration. Unlike other herbivores, thrips negatively influence the very last stage of plant reproduction. The minute and furtive herbivorous thrips have long been ignored in natural systems, but because of their wide host range, they may be important herbivores even in extrafloral nectaried plants, which are usually fiercely protected by ants.  相似文献

Dengue virus (DENV) infections represent a significant concern for public health worldwide, being considered as the most prevalent arthropod-borne virus regarding the number of reported cases. In this study, we report the complete genome sequencing of a DENV serotype 4 isolate, genotype II, obtained in the city of Manaus, directly from the serum sample, applying Ion Torrent sequencing technology. The use of a massive sequencing technology allowed the detection of two variable sites, one in the coding region for the viral envelope protein and the other in the nonstructural 1 coding region within viral populations.  相似文献

The poorly understood physiological and biochemical drought responses induced in sweet orange by citrus rootstocks of contrasting drought tolerance were investigated during a drought/rewatering cycle under controlled conditions. Long-term exposure of the grafted trees to a gradually increasing water deficit and subsequent recovery revealed distinct strategies of drought acclimation that were induced by the different rootstocks. Trees grafted onto the drought-tolerant rootstock ‘Cravo’ rangpur lime were less water conservative, exhibiting an increased cell-wall elasticity that contributes to turgor maintenance and its related processes of growth and photosynthesis over a wider range of soil–water potentials. On the other hand, the drought-tolerant ‘Sunki Tropical’ mandarin and drought-sensitive ‘Flying Dragon’ trifoliate orange rootstocks induced a water conservation strategy by increasing tissue rigidity under drought. ‘Sunki Tropical’ was also able to induce osmotic adjustment, conferring thereby a more efficient water conservation strategy than ‘Flying Dragon’ by allowing for turgor maintenance at lower soil–water potentials while attenuating cell dehydration and shrinkage. In contrast to ‘Cravo’ and ‘Sunki Tropical’, trees grafted onto ‘Flying Dragon’ exhibited a significant photoinhibition of the photosystem II reaction centers, as well as an increased H2O2 production and lipid peroxidation under drought treatment. A significantly higher activity of the antioxidant enzyme GPX was also observed in drought stressed trees grafted onto ‘Flying Dragon’. Collectively, these results support the involvement of elastic and osmotic adjustments, as well as the control of oxidative stress, as functional leaf traits associated with the rootstock-induced drought tolerance in sweet orange.  相似文献

Cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) is one of the most important perennial crops in the world. In Brazil, the decrease in production in the last 25 years was caused by the entry and dissemination of witches’ broom (WB) (Moniliophthora perniciosa Aime & Phillips-Mora) in the cacao region of Bahia, the main producing region of the country. This disease increases costs and reduces crop yields. The main objective of this study was to evaluate interactions between scion and rootstocks for WB resistance through gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence measurements, determinations of the activity of enzymes involved in the antioxidant metabolism and of macro and micronutrient concentration at the leaf level. The experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions using two cacao clones as rootstock, a tolerant (SCA-6) and a susceptible (SIC-876) to WB and CCN-51 as scion, a reference material due to tolerance to the disease, good productivity and high beans butter concentration. No grafted plants of SCA-6, SIC-876 and CCN-51 were used as controls. Were observed either in the grafted and non-grafted genotypes that M. perniciosa infection provoked alterations in the photochemical and biochemical phases of photosynthesis, in activity of enzymes involved in the antioxidant metabolism and in macro and micronutrients concentrations. It was concluded that interactions between scion and rootstock in T. cacao made the scion more tolerant to M. perniciosa infection. SIC-876 rootstock, considered susceptible to WB, had a positive effect on the performance of CCN-51 graft with respect to tolerance to the disease. The higher tolerance of CCN-51 graft to WB, provided by the SIC-876 rootstock, was helped by the increased activity of ascorbate and guaiacol peroxidases, enzymes involved in the antioxidant metabolism.  相似文献
