Summary In the teleost fish, Gillichthys mirabilis, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP)-like immunoreactivity is present in some nerve fibres of the principal pancreatic islet and surrounding tissues, the vagus and splanchnic nerves, the coeliac ganglion and the wall of the intestine. The nerves of the pancreatic islet that contain VIP-like immunoreactivity probably correspond to one of the two types of non-cholinergic, non-adrenergic (peptidergic) nerve previously described in this fish. Similarities in the localisation of hormonal peptides in fish and mammals suggest that the regulation of gastroenteropancreatic physiology in fish may resemble that of mammals.This work was supported by grants from the Medical Research Council of Great Britain and the National Institutes of Health, USA (Grant No. AM 17161)  相似文献

Summary Cotton-field soils from a wilt-free zone (KPT) and from a wilt-sick zone (PLD), and root exudates of diploid and amphidiploid cotton strains grown in KPT and PLD soils were analyzed for 13 free amino acids employing microbiological assay techniques. Test organisms used wereLactobacillus arabinosus 17/5 andLeuconostoc mesenteroides P. 60.Arginine, proline, lysine, serine, glycine, cystine, and tyrosine occurred in both the soils; amounts of these were higher in PLD soil than in KPT soil.Seven to eleven amino acids were found in the root exudates of cotton. Aspartic acid, threonine (in one), phenylalanine and leucine were found in root exudates but not in the control soils. Diploid strains were found to exude greater amounts of amino acids than the amphidiploid strains. Comparing the effect of the two soils tested, it was found that amino acids in exudates of plants grown in PLD soil were higher except in the case of one diploid strain.In the inoculated series, amino acids in the exudates were markedly lower than the respective healthy controls in the diploid strains. In the exudates of amphidiploid strains also, amino acid contents were reduced but to a lesser extent.Significance of occurrence of cystine in the exudates of some strains is indicated.Part of Doctoral thesis, University of Madras.  相似文献

Summary After treating influenza antisera from ferrets with enzymes of a crude filtrate ofVibrio cholerac (pH 7.6) for the purpose of eliminating the non-specific inhibitors it is not possible to detect a significant fall in the titre of the antibodies with the aid of the egg protection test. Five Haflinger mares were hand-milked at 0 h (pre-suckle) and 6 h (postsuckle), 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h after parturition. Total solids, protein, fat, lactose, calculated gross energy content, leptin and non-protein nitrogen components (urea, alpha-amino nitrogen, creatinine and allantoin) were determined. The levels of the major constituents differed significantly in pre-suckle colostrum from subsequent samples. Leptin levels were the highest in whole (9 ng x mL(-1) of immunoreactive human equivalent HE +/- 0.48 ng x mL(-1), SEM) and skimmed (7.8 ng HE x mL(-1) +/- 0.52 ng x mL(-1), SEM) pre-suckle colostrum, declined sharply at 6 hours postpartum, and more slowly subsequently. Mean urea concentration was constant at around 5.0 mM, while a-amino N increased over the observation period and creatinine and allantoin decreased. These findings provide a further indication that mares' milk can be regarded as a functional food.  相似文献

Many prey taxa use kairomones or alarm pheromones to assess the risk of predation in aquatic environments, and the rate at which these cues attenuate determines how precisely they indicate the local density of predators. We estimated the rate of degradation of chemical cues generated by Aeshna dragonfly larvae feeding on Rana temporaria tadpoles. The half‐life of the cue was 35 h and was not influenced by whether it was aged in pond water or tap water or whether other tadpoles were present in the container in which cue‐aging occurred. A review of other published estimates of predator cue half‐life revealed values of 0.2–126 h, and variation among studies was unrelated to the type of aging water, the venue in which water was aged or prey behavior observed (laboratory, field), or the type of behavior that was recorded. We conclude that factors affecting the persistence of predator cues remain uncertain in spite of their importance for understanding the evolution of induced defenses.  相似文献

Adipokines such as adiponectin and visfatin/pre-B-cell colony-enhancing factor (PBEF) have been recently shown to contribute to synovial inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In this study, we evaluated the pathophysiological implication of visfatin/PBEF in the molecular patterns of RA synovial tissue, focusing on RA synovial fibroblasts (RASFs), key players in RA synovium. Expression of visfatin/PBEF in synovial fluid and tissue of RA patients was detected by immunoassays and immunohistochemistry. RASFs were stimulated with different concentrations of visfatin/PBEF over varying time intervals, and changes in gene expression were evaluated at the RNA and protein levels using Affymetrix array, real-time PCR, and immunoassays. The signaling pathways involved were identified. The influence of visfatin/PBEF on fibroblast motility and migration was analyzed. In RA synovium, visfatin/PBEF was predominantly expressed in the lining layer, lymphoid aggregates, and interstitial vessels. In RASFs, visfatin/PBEF induced high amounts of chemokines such as IL-8 and MCP-1, proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-6, and matrix metalloproteinases such as MMP-3. Phosphorylation of p38 MAPK was observed after visfatin/PBEF stimulation, and inhibition of p38 MAPK showed strong reduction of visfatin-induced effects. Directed as well as general fibroblast motility was increased by visfatin/PBEF-induced factors. The results of this study indicate that visfatin/PBEF is involved in synovial fibroblast activation by triggering fibroblast motility and promoting cytokine synthesis at central sites in RA synovium.  相似文献
