We have studied reciprocal transplant gardens involving the hybrid zone between basin and mountain big sagebrush ( Artemisia tridentata ) in Salt Creek Canyon, Utah, for 9 years. Previously, we showed that the parental taxa and hybrids had superior reproductive and vegetative performance in their native garden. These earlier data supported the Bounded Hybrid Superiority model. Now, after 9 years, we find that the mountain seed source plants have greater relative fitness than middle hybrid zone seed source plants in the middle hybrid zone garden. These results may be due to plant density and climatic factors more conducive to mountain seed source growth than that of either basin or middle hybrid zone seed source plants. On the other hand, these fitness estimates do not take into account the timing of reproduction, which together with the age-specific survival rate, can profoundly affect lifetime fitness. The intrinsic rate of increase ( r ) takes both of these factors into account, providing another estimate of fitness. Middle hybrid zone seed source plants had the greatest rate of increase in both the middle hybrid zone and mountain gardens and a greater rate of increase than either parent in the basin garden. This is most likely due to the greater reproductive performance of middle hybrid zone plants earlier in life than either parental taxon. Abstract.
  • 1 A mark–recapture study on the sphecid wasp Sceliphron assimile (Dahlbohm), analysed by Jolly's stochastic method (1965), was made from 3 December 1974 to 22 February 1975 at Green Bay, St Catherine, Jamaica.
  • 2 Population levels in an 18.2 ha study area fluctuated about a mean of 281 for males, 259 for total females and 87 for reproducing females, while the probable carrying-capacity for these reproductives was about 104.
  • 3 Mean estimated daily survival rates were 0.903 for males, 0.924 for total females and 0.945 for reproducing females. For the first two categories these rates decreased (p < 0.02) during the study, probably reflecting increasing emigration. Reproducing females probably do not emigrate and their survival did not significantly decrease.
  • 4 Minimum age was linearly related to wing wear (r=+0.69, P < 0.001) and the latter associated with the progressive maturation and ageing of the ovaries. All surviving females become parous by middle age.
  • 5 The mean rate of fecundity in the field was dependent on female age and was reduced during prolonged drought. Curves of total achieved fecundity appropriate to realistic survival rates give 4.2–16.8 eggs/female. The Jamaican mean was 9.6 ± 2.3 and that for Green Bay 8.6.
  • 6 The proportion of females in the Green Bay population was 0.48 ± 0.03 while 0.55 was expected at emergence.
  • 7 A cyclic budget is used to estimate immigration and emigration, and these were important causes of population change.
  • 8 For Jamaica, only an estimated 28% of females survived to nest.

A comparison was made over five seasons of carrot fly (Psila rosae) damage on two carrot cultivars, Sytan and Danvers, which represented the extremes of resistance discovered in screening trials at Wellesbourne. Plants were harvested regularly during the seasons and at each harvest the number and weight of roots was recorded and carrot fly damage was assessed using various techniques; in 1979-80 the numbers of carrot fly larvae and pupae in and around root samples were counted. The experiments confirmed repeatedly the relative resistance of cv. Sytan compared with Danvers. The estimated reduction in carrot fly larvae on Sytan relative to Danvers in early November in four seasons ranged from 40% to 67%. When tested against first generation carrot fly attack the reduction in larvae on Sytan was 54%. There were 45% fewer mines per root on Sytan resulting in less damage at each harvest in all seasons. Larvae took longer to develop on Sytan than Danvers and 18% more plants of Sytan survived carrot fly attack. Differences in seedstock, season, sowing time, generation of carrot fly, plant size and density did not account for observed differences in damage between the two cultivars. The studies indicated satisfactory practical techniques for assessing carrot fly damage in cultivar screening trials.  相似文献

We used brightfield electron microscopy (BEM), differential interference contrast microscopy (DICM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) to investigate the stylet pathways of Bemisia tabaci during nymphal feeding behavior in cotton leaves beginning with penetration of the abaxial leaf surface and ending with stylets in sieve tubes in phloem tissues. Most nymphal stylets within salivary sheaths penetrating leaf tissues made complex turns and developed more than one salivary sheath branch before ending in sieve tubes. The external morphology of the salivary sheaths and their routes between and through leaf cells are described during the present study. Results showed the presence of the stylet within the sieve tubes. B. tabaci nymphs may remove stylets and feed in different sieve tubes. Ten short movies showing the progression of the stylet penetrations from adaxial surface to the sieve tubes are attached to Figures 8-15. The report and movies can be viewed from the internet. Many insect species rely on their sense of audition to find a mate, to localize prey or to escape from a predator. Cicadas are particularly known for their loud call and the conspicuous tympanal hearing system located in their abdomen. The vibration pattern of the tympanal membrane (TM) has been investigated recently revealing mechanical properties specific to species and sex. Although TM size and shape is likely to affect these patterns, the geometry of the cicada ear has never been examined per se. Focusing on three Mediterranean cicada species, namely Cicadatra atra, Cicada orni and Lyristes plebejus, we investigated the structure of TM shape variation at two levels, within and across species. Applying an elliptic Fourier analysis to the outlines of both male and female TMs, we estimated sexual dimorphism and species effects. Cicadatra atra showed a large TM compared with its small size, probably as a result of selective constraints related to the role of the TM in sound production. Sexual dimorphism seemed to be greater than interspecific variation, indicating that constraints operating on sex might be more selective than those acting on species identification. In addition, C. orni appeared to be significantly different from the two other species. This morphological peculiarity could be related to the unique vibrational pattern of its membrane.
