The bearded manakins in the genus Manacus are lekking, neotropical passerines. Male plumage colour varies with geographical location and classification is based solely on these plumage patterns. It has recently been suggested that in this group of birds, plumage patterns may be a misleading taxonomic character. In this study we used microsatellite variation in a collection of museum samples to establish the amount of genetic divergence between the previously described bearded manakin species/subspecies. We found substantial genetic substructuring between species/subspecies and that plumage patterns indeed may be a misleading taxonomic character because the presence of yellow in male nuptial plumage is found in most divergent forms. We did not detect a significant isolation by distance relationship although the P -value was close to significance. Physical barriers such as rivers and mountains may affect gene flow and play a role in shaping genetic structure of the genus Manacus . SUMMARY. 1. This study links maximum biomass from eighteen aquatic macrophyte communities in the Eastern Townships of Quebec, Canada, to sediment characteristics: chemically exchangeable nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, per cent organic matter, water content and texture, and to biotic variables: number of species and depth of maximum biomass. 2. Total biomass was positively and significantly related to sediment potassium content and to sediment texture. 3. Sediment nitrogen and potassium levels are correlated in the spring but not at the end of the growing season. 4. It appears that sediment potassium is a surrogate variable for the availability of sediment nitrogen which has been shown to limit aquatic macrophyte growth in this area.  相似文献

Although loss of genetic variation is frequently assumed to be associated with loss of adaptive potential, only few studies have examined adaptation in populations with little genetic variation. On the Swedish west coast, the northern fringe populations of the natterjack toad Bufo calamita inhabit an atypical habitat consisting of offshore rock islands. There are strong among‐population differences in the amount of neutral genetic variation, making this system suitable for studies on mechanisms of trait divergence along a gradient of within‐population genetic variation. In this study, we examined the mechanisms of population divergence using QST–FST comparisons and correlations between quantitative and neutral genetic variation. Our results suggest drift or weak stabilizing selection across the six populations included in this study, as indicated by low QSTFST values, lack of significant population × temperature interactions and lack of significant differences among the islands in breeding pond size. The six populations included in this study differed in both neutral and quantitative genetic variation. Also, the correlations between neutral and quantitative genetic variation tended to be positive, however, the relatively small number of populations prevents any strong conclusions based on these correlations. Contrary to the majority of QST–FST comparisons, our results suggest drift or weak stabilizing selection across the examined populations. Furthermore, the low heritability of fitness‐related traits may limit evolutionary responses in some of the populations.  相似文献

Sweet potato mitochondria exhibited respiratory control duringthe oxidation of malate and succinate with ADP/O ratios approachingthe theoretical P/O values. Prior to the addition of ADP themitochondria showed a considerable rate of substrate oxidation,defined as the basic respiration, which was of the same magnitudeas state 4 respiration. Electrons from state 4 and the basicrespiration were at least partially mediated by the cytochromechain, as shown by effects of cyanide, azide and amytal, andby spectrophotometric evidence. The nature of ATPase was studied and the influence of inhibitorsof ATPase activity on oxidation helped to establish the relationshipbetween the several states of oxidation and ATPase activity.The ADP/O ratio and ADP-stimulated respiration were slightlydecreased by fluoride, while state 4, the basic respirationand ATPase activity were effectively inhibited. Chlorpromazineinhibited DNP-stimulated ATPase activity, respiration uncoupledby DNP and all the states of malate oxidation. However, state4 and basic respiration were less sensitive than was state 3of malate oxidation to 0.3 mM chlorpromazine. Taxa missing large amounts of data pose challenges that may hinder the recovery of a well‐resolved, accurate phylogeny and leave questions surrounding their phylogenetic position. Systematists commonly have to contend with one or two species in a group for which there is little or no material available suitable for recovering molecular data. It is unclear whether these taxa can be better placed using analyses based on morphological data only, or should be included in broader analyses based on both morphological and molecular data. The extinct madtom catfish Noturus trautmani is known from few specimens for which molecular data are unavailable. We included this taxon in parsimony and Bayesian analyses of relationships of madtom catfishes based on a combination of morphological and molecular data. Results indicate that using a combination of morphological and molecular data does a better job at providing a phylogenetic placement for N. trautmani than morphology alone, even though it is missing all of its molecular characters.
