The vulnerability of xylem to embolism development in Rhododendron maximum L., an evergreen diffuse-porous shrub, was investigated in relation to the frequency of winter freeze–thaw cycles in high and low light sites of the Eastern US. Though the frequency of freeze–thaw cycles during the winter was lower in North Carolina than in Virginia, the hydraulic conductivity of 3-year-old branches was reduced by up to 60% by winter embolism development in North Carolina compared to less than 30% in Virginia. Generally, small vessel diameters and volumes were associated with a significant resistance to embolism formation resulting from repeated freeze–thaws of xylem sap. In stems grown in high light sites (gaps), larger vessel volumes, and greater diameter growth of stems were associated with a significantly higher degree of freeze–thaw embolism development than in those grown in the low light sites. Thus, the growth patterns of R. maximum stems, under conditions of higher light availability, rendered them more susceptible to freeze–thaw-induced embolisms. Vulnerability to drought-induced embolism in stems was not affected by light environment. Rhododendron maximum was relatively sensitive to drought-induced embolism because 50% loss of hydraulic conductivity occurred at a water potential of -2.2 MPa. The distribution and gas exchange of R. maximum are constrained by the dual effects of freeze-thaw cycles and drought on vascular function.  相似文献

Methane emissions at different rice productivity levels were observed from Texas rice paddy soils during the years 1991–95. Analysis of field measurements showed that seasonal methane emission (E) was strongly dependent on soil, cultivar, and rice grain yield. The relationship can be quantitatively described by E (g m–2) = 0.048 × SI × VI × GY. SI is a soil index to characterize the relative effect of soil texture on emission and is linked with soil sand percentage. VI is a variety index to identify the intervarietal difference in methane emission and is related to the amount of methane emission per unit grain yield. GY is grain yield (g m–2). Constant 0.048 was derived from the measurements of 10 cultivars planted in 1993. Computed emission applying the relationship is well matched with measured data. The comparison of computed with measured seasonal methane emission over an 80-day period using a total of 32 data sets yields a correlation coefficient r 2 of 0.800. In addition, the ratio of seasonal methane emission to net primary productivity was calculated on a carbon to carbon basis, which produces an average value of 2.8%, ranging from 1.2% to 5.4%. A further investigation indicated that the ratio is soil and variety dependent and can be quantitatively explained by C[CH4]/C[NPP] (%) = 3.21 × SI × VI + 0.12 ( r 2 = 0.738, n = 32). Under the condition of 30% soil sand, this ratio is ≈ 3% for the majority of cultivars.  相似文献

Results of morphometric investigations indicate that Arbacia eggs possess a network of cortical endoplasmic reticulum equal in volume and surface area to that within the subcortex. The cortical endoplasmic reticulum surrounds individual cortical granules and forms associations with the plasma membrane reminiscent of junctions shared by the sarcolemma and sarcoplasmic reticulum. Mouse eggs, which also exhibit a cortical granule reaction, possess endoplasmic reticulum that is associated with cortical granules and the plasmalemma. The same relative volume of cortical endoplasmic reticulum is present in mouse eggs as in Arbacia. Significantly less cortical endoplasmic reticulum is present in Spisula eggs which do not undergo cortical granule discharge upon activation. These observations are discussed in light of the hypothesis that the cortical endoplasmic reticulum transduces the interaction of the gametes into an intracellular calcium release which initiates the cortical granule reaction and the activation of development.  相似文献

Productivity and water use of wheat under free-air CO2 enrichment   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
A free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) experiment was conducted at Maricopa, Arizona, on wheat from December 1992 through May 1993. The FACE apparatus maintained the CO2 concentration, [CO2], at 550 μmol mol?1 across four replicate 25-m-diameter circular plots under natural conditions in an open field. Four matching Control plots at ambient [CO2] (about 370 μmol mol?1) were also installed in the field. In addition to the two levels of [CO2], there were ample (Wet) and limiting (Dry) levels of water supplied through a subsurface drip irrigation system in a strip, split-plot design. Measurements were made of net radiation, Rn; soil heat flux, Go; soil temperature; foliage or surface temperature; air dry and wet bulb temperatures; and wind speed. Sensible heat flux, H, was calculated from the wind and temperature measurements. Latent heat flux, λET, and evapotranspiration, ET, were determined as the residual in the energy balance. The FACE treatment reduced daily total Rn by an average 4%. Daily FACE sensible heat flux, H, was higher in the FACE plots. Daily latent heat flux, λET, and evapotranspiration, ET, were consistently lower in the FACE plots than in the Control plots for most of the growing season, about 8% on the average. Net canopy photosynthesis was stimulated by an average 19 and 44% in the Wet and Dry plots, respectively, by elevated [CO2] for most of the growing season. No significant acclimation or down regulation was observed. There was little above-ground growth response to elevated [CO2] early in the season when temperatures were cool. Then, as temperatures warmed into spring, the FACE plants grew about 20% more than the Control plants at ambient [CO2], as shown by above-ground biomass accumulation. Root biomass accumulation was also stimulated about 20%. In May the FACE plants matured and senesced about a week earlier than the Controls in the Wet plots. The FACE plants averaged 0.6 °C warmer than the Controls from February through April in the well-watered plots, and we speculate that this temperature rise contributed to the earlier maturity. Because of the acceleration of senescence, there was a shortening of the duration of grain filling, and consequently, there was a narrowing of the final biomass and yield differences. The 20% mid-season growth advantage of FACE shrunk to about an 8% yield advantage in the Wet plots, while the yield differences between FACE and Control remained at about 20% in the Dry plots.  相似文献

Abstract:  Three new genera including four new species of the bivalve family Mysidiellidae are described from late middle to early late Anisian (Middle Triassic) deposits of Qingyan, Guizhou Province, south-west China. The new taxa Leidapoconcha gigantea gen. et sp. nov., Waijiaoella elegans gen. et sp. nov., Waijiaoella speciosa gen. et sp. nov. and Qingyaniola mirabilis gen. et sp. nov. significantly increase the known taxonomic diversity within the Mysidiellidae. These findings suggest a somewhat endemic evolutionary development within this small bivalve family during the Middle Triassic in south-west China.  相似文献

Female choice is thought to increase the fitness returns of females. The complementary choice model states that the best mate depends on the particular genotype of a female. Aculeate Hymenoptera represent a special case of complementary female choice because males should be chosen on the basis of their allele at the sex determination locus. The prevalent sex determination mechanism in bees and wasps (single-locus complementary sex determination) requires that, to produce a daughter, diploid offspring are heterozygous at the sex determination locus. Otherwise, infertile diploid males result. Inevitably, the proportion of diploid males increases with the rate of inbreeding. In the European Beewolf, males scent mark territories to attract mates and the composition of the pheromone might provide a basis for female choice. One crucial prerequisite for females to be able to discriminate against brothers and avoid inbreeding is that the male sex pheromone varies with familial affiliation. This hypothesis was tested by analysing the pheromone of male progeny of eight mothers using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. A significantly higher similarity was found among brothers than among unrelated individuals. 1. Historically, biogeographic barriers to the movement of aquatic organisms existed at multiple spatial scales and contributed to the development of unique regional faunas. At increasing spatial scales, these barriers consisted of waterfalls and cascades; catchment divides; major mountain ranges and oceans. This hierarchy of movement barriers produced increasingly distinct aquatic biotas at larger drainage units. 2. Humans have provided a variety of pathways by which aquatic species can circumvent historical biogeographic barriers. These include both authorised and unauthorised stocking, construction of canals and water conveyance systems, transport in ship ballast water, fishing and angling gear (including boats) transferred among water bodies and intentional release of ornamental and other captive species. 3. One consequence of human‐aided breaching of biogeographic barriers has been the spread of noxious species that have altered aquatic ecosystems and fisheries in ways that are undesirable to humans. 4. Another consequence of human‐aided breaching of biogeographic barriers has been the homogenization of aquatic biotas. Homogenization occurs when a few cosmopolitan species come to dominate communities at the expense of unique native species. Among aquatic organisms this phenomenon is best documented for fish faunas where a small set of species introduced for sport fishing, aquaculture, or ornamental purposes have become widespread throughout the world. 5. Slowing biotic homogenization will require slowing the rate at which species breach biogeographic barriers. This will involve implementing regulations that limit stocking opportunities; increasing the public's awareness about the consequences of releasing non‐native species and developing technological solutions that prevent movement of aquatic organisms or eliminate them before they become established. 6. River restoration can influence homogenization of aquatic biotas through two major mechanisms: by removing barriers to movement and by restoring natural habitat conditions. Removal of movement barriers may facilitate the spread of non‐native species and thus contribute to biotic homogenization. Restoration of natural flow regimes and habitat conditions may reduce biotic homogenization by favouring regional native species over cosmopolitan, non‐native species.  相似文献

Winter buds of American pondweed (Potamogeton nodosus Poir.)were found to be strongly dormant at maturity. Under normalconditions the dormancy lasted for several months. Cold treatmentdecreased the period required for after-ripening, and exposureof dormant buds to 32° C for three days caused most of thebuds to grow in two weeks. Removal of bud scales in light wasvery effective in promoting growth. Soaking of dormant budsin solutions of gibberellic acid, sucrose, combinations of gibberellicacid and sucrose, -naphthylacetic acid and fenac (2,3,6-trichlorophenylaceticacid) partially relieved the growth suppression. Treatmentswith indole-3-acetic acid at 1,000 ppm for 18 hours broke dormancycompletely in all buds, indicating that low levels of this substancemay be the primary cause of dormancy in this species.  相似文献

1. Variation in thermal conditions and season length along latitudinal gradients affect body size‐related traits over different life stages. Selection is expected to optimise these size traits in response to the costs and benefits. 2. Egg, hatchling, larval and adult size in males and females were estimated along a latitudinal gradient of 2730 km across Europe in the univoltine damselfly Lestes sponsa, using a combination of field‐collection and laboratory‐rearing experiments. In the laboratory, individuals were grown in temperatures and photoperiod simulating those at the latitude of origin, and in common‐garden conditions. 3. The size of adults sampled in nature was negatively correlated with latitude. In all populations the females were larger than the males. Results from simulated and common‐garden rearing experiments supported this pattern of size difference across latitudes and between sexes, suggesting a genetic component for the latitudinal size trend and female‐biased size dimorphism. In contrast, hatchling size showed a positive relationship with latitude, but egg size, although differing between latitudes, showed no such relationship. 4. The results support a converse Bergmann cline, i.e. a negative body size cline towards the north. This negative cline in body size is probably driven by progressively stronger seasonal time and temperature constraints towards the higher latitudes and by the obligate univoltine life cycle of L. sponsa. As egg size showed no relationship with latitude, other environmental factors besides temperature, such as desiccation risk, probably affect this trait.  相似文献

The immunochemical relationships between the aqueous alcohol-solubleprolamin storage proteins of temperate cereals (wheat, barley,rye and oats) and five species of Festucoid meadow grasses (Loliumperenne, Festuca rubra, F. arundinacea, Dactylis glomerata andPhleum pratense) were studied by "Western Blot" analyses usingantisera raised against C hordein of barley, -gliadin of wheatand avenins of oats. In addition, the reaction between the Chordein antiserum and the grass prolamins was studied usinga quantitative laser nephelometer assay. The results confirmedthe previously reported structural relationship between theprolamins of Festuca and Lolium and members of the Triticeae(barley, wheat, rye). They also showed a strong antigenic relationshipbetween the prolamins of Dactylis and Phleum and avenins ofoats, and this is consistent with their molecular weights andamino acid compositions. The results indicate that similar immunochemicalstudies may be of value in clarifying the taxonomic relationshipsof Festucoid meadow grasses.
