1. Small cladocerans, copepod nauplii and rotifers often dominate the zooplankton community in tropical and subtropical lakes. This is probably because of high predation pressure by small omnivorous–planktivorous fish, but experimental evidence is scarce.
2. This study used two approaches to test the effect of the small omnivorous–planktivorous fish species Jenynsia multidentata , which is frequently abundant in (sub)tropical eutrophic lakes in South America, on the size distribution of zooplankton. In Lake Blanca (Uruguay), which lacks any piscivores, we sampled seasonally for both fish and zooplankton. We also conducted an outdoor mesocosm experiment with treatments containing or lacking J. multidentata .
3. Together, the empirical and experimental data suggest that J. multidentata predation plays an important role in modulating the size structure of the zooplankton community in subtropical lakes. In the absence of J. multidentata , stocked large-sized zooplankters like Daphnia obtusa were abundant in the experiments, while small-sized zooplankton dominated in the presence of fish, as they did in the lake itself from spring to the end of the season.  相似文献

1. Structural complexity may stabilise predator–prey interactions and affect the outcome of trophic cascades by providing prey refuges. In deep lakes, vulnerable zooplankton move vertically to avoid fish predation. In contrast, submerged plants often provide a diel refuge against fish predation for large‐bodied zooplankton in shallow temperate lakes, with consequences for the whole ecosystem. 2. To test the extent to which macrophytes serve as refuges for zooplankton in temperate and subtropical lakes, we introduced artificial plant beds into the littoral area of five pairs of shallow lakes in Uruguay (30°–35°S) and Denmark (55°–57°N). We used plants of different architecture (submerged and free‐floating) along a gradient of turbidity over which the lakes were paired. 3. We found remarkable differences in the structure (taxon‐richness at the genus level, composition and density) of the zooplankton communities in the littoral area between climate zones. Richer communities of larger‐bodied taxa (frequently including Daphnia spp.) occurred in the temperate lakes, whereas small‐bodied taxa characterised the subtropical lakes. More genera and a higher density of benthic/plant‐associated cladocerans also occurred in the temperate lakes. The density of all crustaceans, except calanoid copepods, was significantly higher in the temperate lakes (c. 5.5‐fold higher). 4. Fish and shrimps (genus Palaemonetes) seemed to exert a stronger predation pressure on zooplankton in the plant beds in the subtropical lakes, while the pelagic invertebrate Chaoborus sp. was slightly more abundant than in the temperate lakes. In contrast, plant‐associated predatory macroinvertebrates were eight times more abundant in the temperate than in the subtropical lakes. 5. The artificial submerged plants hosted significantly more cladocerans than the free‐floating plants, which were particularly avoided in the subtropical lakes. Patterns indicating diel horizontal migration were frequently observed for both overall zooplankton density and individual taxa in the temperate, but not the subtropical, lakes. In contrast, patterns of diel vertical migration prevailed for both the overall zooplankton and for most individual taxa in the subtropics, irrespective of water turbidity. 6. Higher fish predation probably shapes the general structure and dynamics of cladoceran communities in the subtropical lakes. Our results support the hypothesis that horizontal migration is less prevalent in the subtropics than in temperate lakes, and that no predator‐avoidance behaviour effectively counteracts predation pressure in the subtropics. Positive effects of aquatic plants on water transparency, via their acting as a refuge for zooplankton, may be generally weak or rare in warm lakes.  相似文献

Abstract Progress in plant demography will depend upon being able to synthesize a large body of data and this requires a means of comparing populations between sites and species. We have employed a comparative technique using elasticity analysis of stage-projection matrices to partition the contributions of fecundity (F), survival (L) and growth (G) to the finite rate of increase λ. Ordination of populations of 77 perennial herbs and trees in G-L-F space has shown that species segregate in this triangular space according to their life history and habitat. In the present paper we use the correspondence between demographic parameters and habitat revealed by this method to predict how succession and a variety of environmental factors such as grazing and fire are likely to alter the demography of populations and ultimately to change the composition of communities.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Euplotidium itoi share with some other species of the same genus a peculiar feature: the presence of a band of particles running along the right and left borders of the cell body and forming a sort of "scarf" at the dorsal anterior end. The ultrastructural analysis, here performed, revealed that these particles (reported in the literature as extrusomes) are always external to the cell and are inserted in matching depressions on the euplotidium cortex. They are present in two different forms: type I, whose ultrastructure recalls that of bacteria, are able to reproduce by binary fission; type II are not able to divide and contain peculiar structures (a granular dome-shaped zone, a complex extrusive apparatus and a network of regularly arranged fibrils) which render them more complicated with respect to the majority of prokaryotic organisms. These observations, together with the finding that these particles contain DNA, indicate that we are dealing with epibionts, that will be referred to as "epixenosomes" (ecto-organisms), rather than extrusomes. Some ideas about the nature of "epixenosomes" and their relationship with the host cell are proposed and discussed.  相似文献

A review of the genus Semele (Ruscaceae) systematics in Madeira   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The present study attempts to review the systematics of Semele (Ruscaceae) in Madeira, based on phenotypic diversity. The variation in some vegetative (climbing shoot, second-order branches or 'phylloclades') and sexual (inflorescence and flowers) characters was analysed in 115 plant specimens from 30 field populations, herbaria of the Costa collection and Madeira Botanical Garden (MADJ) and certain gardens. Thirty-one quantitative and qualitative characters have been utilized in the analysis. Kaiser–Meyer–Olkin (KMO) analysis indicates adequate sampling. Principal component analysis (PCA) reveals that the spatial distribution of individuals has a discontinuous behaviour. Principal coordinate analysis (PCO) utilizing the Gower coefficient on standardized data revealed a significantly discontinuous distribution of individuals, such that two different clusters can be defined. The Student's t -test and Tukey test on separate characters, when individuals were classified according to the Costa classification, confirms the significant differences between grouping accessions. This leads to the recognition of two species within the genus in Madeira. Literature and herbarium studies show that these two taxa are conspecific with Semele androgyna (L.) Kunth sensu stricto (s.s.) and Semele menezesi Costa sensu lato (s.l.) . A separated statistical analysis of the S. androgyna cluster shows the possible existence of additional subgroups. Based on field population distribution, ecological behaviour and variation in features, we propose the recognition of two species, S. androgyna (L.) Kunth and S. menezesi (Costa) Pinheiro de Carvalho, and two subspecies S. androgyna (L.) Kunth androgyna Pinheiro de Carvalho and S. androgyna (L.) Rising concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide have been predicted to stimulate the growth of forest trees. However, long-term effects on trees growing to maturity and to canopy closure while exposed to elevated CO2 have never been examined. We compared tree ring chronologies of Mediterranean Quercus ilex which have been continuously exposed to elevated CO2 (around 650 μmol mol–1) since they were seedlings, near two separate natural CO2 springs with those from trees at nearby ambient-CO2‘control’ sites. Trees grown under high CO2 for 30 years (1964–93) showed a 12% greater final radial stem width than those growing at the ambient-CO2 control sites. However, this stimulation was largely due to responses when trees were young. By the time trees were 25–30 y old the annual difference in tree ring width between low and high CO2 grown trees had disappeared. At any given tree age, elevated CO2 had a relatively greater positive effect on tree ring width in years with a dry spring compared to years with more rainfall between April and May. This indicates a beneficial effect of elevated CO2 on tree water relations under drought stress. Our data suggest that the early regeneration phase of forest stands can be accelerated in CO2-enriched atmospheres and that maximum biomass per land area may be reached sooner than under lower CO2 concentrations. In our study, high CO2 grown Q. ilex trees reached the same stem basal area at the age of 26 y as control trees at 29 y, i.e. three years earlier (faster turnover of carbon?). Reliable predictions of the future development of forests need to account for the variable responses of trees over their entire lifetime. Such responses to elevated CO2 can presently only be assessed at such unique field sites.  相似文献

Gas exchange and organic acid accumulation of the C3-CAM intermediateClusia minor L. were investigated in response to various day/nighttemperatures and two light regimes (low and high PAR). For bothlight levels equal day/night temperatures between 20°C and30°C caused a typical C3 gas exchange pattern with all CO2uptake occurring during daylight hours. A day/ night temperatureof 15°C caused a negative CO2 balance over a 24 h periodfor low-PAR-grown plants while high-PAR-grown plants showeda CAM gas exchange pattern with most CO2 uptake taking placeduring the dark period. However, there was always a considerablenight-time accumulation of malic acid which increased when thenight-time temperature was lowered and had its maximum (54 mmolm–2) at day/night temperature of 30/15°C. A significantamount of malic acid accumulation (23 mmol m–2) in low-PAR-grownplants was observed only at 30/15°C. Recycling of respiratoryCO2 in terms of malic acid accumulation reached between 2·0and 21·5 mmol m–2 for high-PAR-grown plants whilethere was no significant recycling for low-PAR-grown plants.Both low and high-PAR-grown plants showed considerable night-timeaccumulation of citric acid. Indeed under several temperatureregimes low-PAR-grown plants showed day/night changes in citricacid levels whereas malic acid levels remained approximatelyconstant or slightly decreased. It is hypothesized that lowand high-PAR-grown plants have different requirements for citrate.In high-PAR-grown plants, the breakdown of citrate preventsphotoinhibition by increasing internal CO2 levels, whereas inlow-PAR-grown plants the night-time accumulation of citric acidmay function as an energy and carbon saving mechanism. Night-time citrate accumulation has been proposed as a response to stress in CAM plants. To address this hypothesis, gas exchange patterns and nocturnal acid accumulation in three species of Clusia were investigated under controlled conditions with regard to water stress and responses to low and high photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD). Under high PPFD, leaves of Clusia nocturnally accumulated large amounts of both malic and citric acids. Under low PPFD and well-watered conditions, substantial night-time citrate accumulation persisted, whereas malate accumulation was close to zero. Malate accumulation and night-time CO2 uptake from the atmosphere declined in all three species during prolonged drought periods, whereas citrate accumulation remained similar or increased. Recycling of respiratory CO2 was substantial for both well-watered and water-stressed plants. The suggestion that citrate accumulation is energetically more favourable than malate accumulation is not supported if the source of CO2 for the formation of malate is respiratory CO2. However, the breakdown of citric acid to pyruvate in the light period releases three molecules of CO2, while the breakdown of malic acid releases only one CO2 per pyruvate formed. Thus, citric acid should be more effective than malic acid as a mechanism to increase CO2 concentration in the mesophyll and may help to prevent photoinhibition. Organic acid accumulation also affected the vacuolar pH, which reached values of 2·6–3·0 at dawn. At these pH values, the transport of 2H+/ATP is still feasible, suggesting that it is the divalent form of citrate which is being transported in the vacuoles. Since citrate is a well-known buffer, and Clusia spp. show the largest day-night changes in organic acid levels measured in any CAM plant, it is possible that citrate increases the buffer capacity of the vacuoles. Indeed, malate and titratable acidity levels are positively related to citrate levels. Moreover, Clusia species that show the highest nocturnal accumulation of organic acids are also the ones that show the greatest changes in citric acid levels.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Heterokaryosis is the initial step of the parasexual cycle, a process that provides genetic variability in filamentous fungi through the production of heterozygous diploid nuclei. To characterize the parasexual cycle in Colletotrichum lindemuthianum, we evaluated the presence of heterokaryosis, vegetative compatibility reactions, and diploid formation among isolates of Race 65 collected from different Brazilian states. Vegetative compatibility groups were identified among the isolates according to their ability to form heterokaryons. Two heterozygous diploids were selected from compatible heterokaryons, which were characterized by the segregation of the parental auxotrophic markers and by RAPD profiles.  相似文献
