The influence of the pineal gland on the hypothalamic serotonergic function was examined by studying the effects of long-term pinealectomy (1 month) and melatonin replacement (500 μg/kg; 10 days) on serotonin (5-HT) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) content as well as on the in vivo 5-HT synthesis rate in discrete hypothalamic nuclei. Pinealectomy was followed by a significant decrease of 5-HT content in the anterior hypothalamic nuclei (AHN) and the ventromedial hypothalamic nuclei (VMHN), and also in 5-HIAA content in lateral (LPON) and medial preoptic nuclei (MPON). The 5-HT synthesis rate, estimated from the accumulation of 5-hydroxytryptophan after blockade of the 1-amino acid decarboxylase activity, were also decreased in the AHN and the paraventricular hypothalamic nuclei (PVHN) of pinealectomized rats. In contrast, an enhanced 5-HT synthesis rate and basal 5-HIAA content were found in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) after pinealectomy. Daily treatment with melatonin for 10 days reversed most of the effects induced by pinealectomy. Thus, melatonin increased the levels of 5-HT in the AHN and VMHN, and slightly increased the 5-HIAA content in preoptic nuclei. In addition, melatonin increased the 5-HT synthesis rate in the AHN and VMHN, but also in the MPON, VMHN and dorsomedial hypothalamic nuclei (DMHN) where pinealectomy had no effect. By contrast, melatonin treatment did not affect SCN 5-HT synthesis rate, although it decreased 5-HIAA levels. The results demonstrate that melatonin is able to stimulate 5-HT metabolism in most of the hypothalamic areas, but inhibits SCN 5-HT function. Some of the effects of melatonin seems to be exerted by modulating the synthesis of the amine, although melatonin likely also interacts with other regulatory processes of 5-HT function (i.e. release/uptake). The well defined presence of melatonin receptors in the rat SCN, and its absence in other hypothalamic structures, suggest that this may be the mechanism mediating the differential response to endogenous melatonin. Moreover, the larger effect of exogenous melatonin in relation to pinealectomy suggests the presence of melatonin unespecific effects possibly owing to supraphysiological doses. The present findings may be relevant for the mode of action of melatonin and its implication in several endocrine and behavioral functions mediated by serotonergic neurons. Gas chromatography was used to measure ethylene (ethene) andethane production by tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum cv. Wisconsinno. 38) callus tissues grown on media containing inorganic saltsaccording to Murashige and Skoog (1962), sucrose, myo-inositol,thiamine-HCl kinetic according to Linsmaier and Skoog (1965),and either 2,4-dichiorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) in the range0–100 mgl–1 or 2 mgl–1 indoi-3-ylacetic acidplus NaCl in the range 0–200 Meq l–1. Ethylene productionrates were high (> 500 nl h–1 g1– fresh weight)initially in all treatments. Subsequently, ethylene productiondeclined in rapidly growing cultures but remained high in moderatelyand severely 2,4-D (> 0·5 mgl–1) stressed andin severely NaCl (150 Meql–1) stressed cultures. Highinitial rates of ethane production (> 200 nl h–1 g–1fresh weight) were obtained under conditions of severe stresscaused by 2,4-D or NaCl but not in control or moderately inhibitedcultures. With further incubation ethane production declinedin the severely stressed cultures. It is concluded that ethyleneproduction can be used as an index of moderate 2,4-D stressand severe NaCl stress by virtue of the high persisting ratesof ethylene production in stressed cultures. Ethane productioncan be used as an early index of severe stress caused by either2,4-D or NaCl in vitro. The Mexican pseudothelphusid crabs are classified in one subfamily, three tribes, and 13 genera. Up to now, 56 species have been recognized, distributed in a strictly Neotropical pattern, with some of them reaching the state of Sonora on the western slope of Mexico. The tribe Pseudothelphusini is the most diverse, with five genera and 35 species, all of them endemic to Mexico: the two most species‐rich genera are Pseudothelphusa, with 23 species, and Tehuana, with eight species; Epithelphusa includes two species, whereas Disparithelphusa and Smalleyus are monotypic. The Pseudothelphusini lack an updated systematic revision, which could serve as a framework to analyse the monophyletic origin of the group, to clarify the relationships among genera and species, as well as to resolve the taxonomic status of various species complexes. In the present study, an exhaustive morphological revision was conducted using somatic and sexual characters. A phylogenetic analysis was performed using 77 characters and 183 character states, taken from 41 species. Ten trees of the same length were obtained using PAUP 4.0 through a heuristic search. The results show that the tribe as it is actually known constitutes a paraphyletic group, in which the species of Epithelphusa and Pseudothelphusa puntarenas are excluded from the internal group. According to the obtained results, the tribe Pseudothelphusini s.s. includes five genera: Smalleyus, Pseudothelphusa, Tehuana, and two new ones to accommodate Pseudothelphusa galloi and Pseudothelphusa sulcifrons, respectively. This new arrangement considers the provisional suppression of the genus Disparithelphusa, which remained as another species of Pseudothelphusa throughout the cladistic analysis. The phylogenetic results show a strong congruence with the distribution of the species, in several cases grouping species that form morphological clines along a geographical gradient. The previously proposed southern origin of the tribe Pseudothelphusini gains support with the results obtained. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 160 , 457–481  相似文献

Organism size is one of the key determinants of community structure, and its relationship with abundance can describe how biomass is partitioned among the biota within an ecosystem. An outdoor freshwater mesocosm experiment was used to determine how warming of~4 °C would affect the size, biomass and taxonomic structure of planktonic communities. Warming increased the steepness of the community size spectrum by increasing the prevalence of small organisms, primarily within the phytoplankton assemblage and it also reduced the mean and maximum size of phytoplankton by approximately one order of magnitude. The observed shifts in phytoplankton size structure were reflected in changes in phytoplankton community composition, though zooplankton taxonomic composition was unaffected by warming. Furthermore, warming reduced community biomass and total phytoplankton biomass, although zooplankton biomass was unaffected. This resulted in an increase in the zooplankton to phytoplankton biomass ratio in the warmed mesocosms, which could be explained by faster turnover within the phytoplankton assemblages. Overall, warming shifted the distribution of phytoplankton size towards smaller individuals with rapid turnover and low standing biomass, resulting in a reorganization of the biomass structure of the food webs. These results indicate future environmental warming may have profound effects on the structure and functioning of aquatic communities and ecosystems.  相似文献

1. Organisms rely on a set of primary barriers to prevent invasion by parasites, and secondary defences to fight parasites that breach the primary barriers. However, maintaining these defences to be active and effective is costly. Thus, hosts increase investment in anti‐parasite defences under situations of high risk of infection and reduce defences when the risk is reduced (the ‘Density‐Dependent Prophylaxis’ hypothesis). 2. In the present study, it was tested whether the midgut primary defences of the velvetbean caterpillar Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner present density‐dependent plasticity, and also whether these defences could be induced by a viral pathogenic challenge. The aim was to examine whether morphometry and the structure of the midgut and peritrophic matrix (PM) change in accordance with colour transition in caterpillars, and whether such changes may provide the caterpillars a more protective barrier against invasion by Anticarsia gemmatalis multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (AgMNPV). 3. It was found that PM and the midgut epithelium of the velvetbean caterpillar change plastically according to phenotype, itself a response to changes in population density. Caterpillars reared at high densities (black phenotype) had a considerably thicker midgut epithelia and peritrophic matrices than those reared individually (green phenotype), and there was also more chitin in the PM of the former. 4. This was interpreted as the first demonstration of increased investment in primary, barrier, defences against parasites, in response to increased conspecific density and an increased risk of infection. The possibility that this arises as a positive result of pleiotropy is discussed further, wherein the biochemical pathways responsible for the up‐regulation of the immune system are also involved in midgut properties.  相似文献

1. Ants, as well as many species of parasitoids and predators, rely on sugar‐rich foods such as honeydew to fulfill their energetic needs. Thus, ants and natural enemies may interact through the shared honeydew exploitation. 2. Ant‐exclusion experiments were performed in a citrus orchard to test the hypothesis that ants may impact the energy reserves of predators and parasitoids through the competition for honeydew. Through the use of high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) the level of ant activity with the energy reserves and feeding history of individual specimens collected in the field during representative days of spring, summer, and autumn were related. 3. Out of 145 Aphytis chrysomphali Mercet parasitoids captured in the field, 65% were classified as sugar‐fed and 24.7% as honeydew‐fed. In summer, when ant activity peaked, there was a significant negative correlation between the level of ant activity and the total sugar content and honeydew feeding incidence by A. chrysomphali. Out of 47 individuals of the predator Chrysoperla carnea sensu lato (Stephens), captured in the field, 55.3% were classified as sugar‐fed. We found a significant negative effect of the level of ant activity on the sugar‐feeding incidence by C. carnea in spring. 4. The present study provides evidence that ants can interfere with the energy reserves of natural enemies. This interaction may be widespread in various ecosystems with important consequences for the arthropod community composition and with practical implications for biological control given that absence of sugar feeding is detrimental for the fitness of many species of predators and parasitoids.  相似文献

We describe the oldest Paucituberculata marsupials, from the La Barda and Las Flores localities (Argentina; Late Palaeocene, and Early–Middle Eocene), as well as from the Itaboraí Basin (Brazil; Late Palaeocene). The new taxa are represented by very scarce, although well‐preserved, dental remains. A parsimony analysis was performed in order to evaluate the phylogenetic affinities of these taxa. Representatives of both Riolestes capricornicus gen. et sp. nov. and Bardalestes hunco gen. et sp. nov. appear to be basal paucituberculatans, and their molar features give clues on the early evolution of the representatives of this order. Within the Paucituberculata we recognize two major clades: Caenolestoidea and Palaeothentoidea. We conclude that ‘pseudodiprotodont’ marsupials of the traditional literature (i.e. Polydolopimorphia + Paucituberculata) do not form a natural group. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 155 , 867–884.  相似文献

The species related to Vriesea paraibica (Bromeliaceae, Tillandsioideae) have controversial taxonomic limits. For several decades, this group has been identified in herbarium collections as V. × morreniana, an artificial hybrid that does not grow in natural habitats. The aim of this study was to assess the morphological variation in the V. paraibica complex through morphometric analyses of natural populations. Two sets of analyses were performed: the first involved six natural populations (G1) and the second was carried out on taxa that emerged from the first analysis, but using material from herbarium collections (G2). Univariate ANOVA was used, as well as discriminant analysis of 16 morphometric variables in G1 and 18 in G2. The results of the analyses of the two groups were similar and led to the selection of diagnostic traits of four species. Lengths of the lower and median floral bracts were significant for the separation of red and yellow floral bracts. Vriesea paraibica and V. interrogatoria have red bracts; these two species are differentiated by the widths of the lower and median portions of the inflorescence and by scape length. These structures are larger in the former and smaller in the latter. Of the species with yellow floral bracts, V. eltoniana is distinguished by longer leaf blades and scapes and V. flava is characterized by its shorter sepal lengths. © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2009, 159 , 163–181.  相似文献
