This paper is concerned with the mechanical strength of fixed osseointegrated dental implants subjected to cyclic external loads, applied mainly in a direction orthogonal to their axis. Such a loading condition, seen as a basic design action for the implant, has been given little attention so far. Experimental results and numerical simulations, performed on two- and three-dimensional Finite Element models, are discussed. The shakedown theory is used to show that a common implant design (threaded fixture-abutment-connection screw) is susceptible of low-cycle fatigue failure under loading conditions well within the working range, even if the same design is able to withstand loading of the same type, but applied monotonically, much in excess of the working values. The shakedown analyses give an indication of several possible failure modalities: the low-cycle fatigue either of the implant or of the connection screw, or the loosening of the connection screw itself. Experimental and numerical results are in good qualitative agreement, and both suggest that the issue of transversal cyclic loading on fixed dental implants should be carefully reconsidered in the design phase.  相似文献

Biological invasions and land‐use changes are two major causes of the global modifications of biodiversity. Habitat suitability models are the tools of choice to predict potential distributions of invasive species. Although land‐use is a key driver of alien species invasions, it is often assumed that land‐use is constant in time. Here we combine historical and present day information, to evaluate whether land‐use changes could explain the dynamic of invasion of the American bullfrog Rana catesbeiana (=Lithobathes catesbeianus) in Northern Italy, from the 1950s to present‐day. We used maxent to build habitat suitability models, on the basis of past (1960s, 1980s) and present‐day data on land‐uses and species distribution. For example, we used models built using the 1960s data to predict distribution in the 1980s, and so on. Furthermore, we used land‐use scenarios to project suitability in the future. Habitat suitability models predicted well the spread of bullfrogs in the subsequent temporal step. Models considering land‐use changes predicted invasion dynamics better than models assuming constant land‐use over the last 50 years. Scenarios of future land‐use suggest that suitability will remain similar in the next years. Habitat suitability models can help to understand and predict the dynamics of invasions; however, land‐use is not constant in time: land‐use modifications can strongly affect invasions; furthermore, both land management and the suitability of a given land‐use class may vary in time. An integration of land‐use changes in studies of biological invasions can help to improve management strategies.  相似文献

Abstract:  Abundant and well-preserved Early Jurassic ammonite assemblages occur in the Taseko Lakes map area on the Cadwallader Terrane in the southern Coast Mountains of British Columbia. The ammonite assemblage described herein includes nine genera and 14 species, most of them already known from classical localities of northern and southern Europe. The presence in particular of Caenisites brooki (Sowerby) and C. turneri (Sowerby) permits high-resolution correlation with the Turneri Zone of the north-west European Sinemurian zonation. The specimens were collected at four localities but most come from an olistolith where the ammonite assemblage is dominated by Coroniceras ( Paracoroniceras ) mutabile Macchioni, Smith and Tipper, associated with Lytotropites fucinii (Bonarelli) and Hypasteroceras montii (De Stefani). The latter two species, whose exact age is here established for the first time, have a Mediterranean distribution.  相似文献

The darkling beetle Pimelia rugulosa rugulosa Germar, 1824 was selected to investigate the process of colonization in a volcanic archipelago and the role of volcanism in determining spatial patterns of genetic variability. Analyses were conducted in the Aeolian Islands, located in the central Mediterranean directly off the Sicilian coast. Genetic variability and geographic structure were studied in individuals from each island of the archipelago based on sequences of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 2 mitochondrial gene; a network approach was employed to identify haplotype lineages. A strong genetic structure, with no haplotype sharing among islands, was observed. Six separate lineages were identified that independently colonized different islands of the archipelago from the mainland and differentiated locally to form small haplogroups. Variability of observed haplogroups is correlated with island age and a positive correlation between tenebrionid diversity and mitotype diversity is reported. Some, yet undescribed, catastrophic event is hypothesized to explain the depletion of a substantial part of the genetic, as well as biological diversity in the island of Filicudi. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 104 , 29–37.  相似文献

Abstract.  The maize stemborer Sesamia nonagrioides glues its egg masses under the leaf sheaths or ear bracts using colleterial gland secretion. In spite of such concealed oviposition sites, these eggs are parasitized by Telenomus busseolae. The colleterial glands of S. nonagrioides are investigated as a possible source of the host-recognition kairomone for T. busseolae . This secretion, applied on glass beads, elicits intense antennal drumming and oviposition probing behaviour in the parasitoid. Through an histochemical study, neutral and acid glycoconjugates are identified as components of the secretion. Finally, using ultrastructural techniques, the colleterial glands are described and classified as comprising class 3 secretory cells.  相似文献

Aspects of the ecology of a suburban population of rainbow lizards, Agama agama Linnaeus 1758, have been studied in Malindi, a coastal locality of SE Kenya. Four different family groups were monitored on a wall transect 120 m long. Each group constituted a dominant male (i.e. a brightly coloured and aggressive individual) and three to four adult females, but in one of the studied groups a subordinate male was also seen. Both sexes were active in the morning, and peak activity fell between 10.00 and 11.30 hours. Dominant males used elevated perches significantly more often than subordinate males and females. The diet consisted of terrestrial arthropods, and most of the prey eaten were beetles (6–8 mm long). The foraging strategy used by rainbow lizards was to eat small insects at very short time intervals. The lizards used sit-and-wait foraging, remaining motionless until the prey was <5 cm away. The rainbow lizards studied did not feed upon plant material.  相似文献

Spermatozoa from seven gall-midge species, representing the supertribes Lasiopteridi and Stomatosematidi, have been examined by electron microscopy and compared to the spermatozoa of 30 previously examined gall-midge species of the subfamily Cecidomyiinae. Derived characteristics of all examined representatives of this subfamily are the lack of acrosome and the absence of accessory tubules in their axoneme. The sperm axoneme of Didactylomyia has a unique '9 + 5 pattern', i.e. with 9 outer doublets and 5 inner singlet microtubules. Unlike other members of Cecidomyiinae, Didactylomyia has retained some plesiomorphic traits, namely crystal containing mitochondria and a homogeneously condensed nucleus. Stomatosema has a 10 + 0 axoneme and an irregular nuclear condensation. Thus, Didactylomyia may serve as an useful outgroup for phylogenetic analysis within the subfamily Cecidomyiinae. The supertribe Stomatosematidi is a paraphyletic assemblage. Nearly all members of Lasiopteridi, Ozirhincus, Arnoldiola, Brachineura and Ledomyia , have a synapomorphic character in the great number of microtubules in parallel to the axoneme. A notable exception is Rhizomyia , which shares certain apomorphic traits with several genera that have previously been classified within the Cecidomyiidi, i.e. Contarinia, Allocontarinia, Lestodiplosis and Myricomyia. Moreover, these genera have a flat sperm tail and microtubular doublets located close to the cell membrane, both characteristics that differ markedly from the very peculiar sperm tail found in other members of Cecidomyiidi.
Cladistic analysis of sperm characters suggests that the supertribe Cecidomyiidi is a polyphyletic taxon and supports the existence of a sister-group relationship between the supertribe Lasiopteridi and the genera Rhizomyia, Contarinia, Allocontarinia, Lestodiplosis and Myricomyia.  相似文献

The external morphology of soft parts of the rare Patella ferrugineaGmelin, 1791 is described, and its relationships with P. caerulea,P. rustica and P. ulys-siponensis are investigated on both morphologicaland electrophoretic grounds. Soft part morphology is a gooddiscriminative tool, but of little help in detecting affinities.Electrophoretic data on 19 presumptive loci suggest that P.rustica is the closest species to P. ferruginea, whereas P.caerulea and P. ulyssiponensis are clustered separately. Meanobserved heterozyg-osities arc higher in P. ferruginea and P.rustica. It is concluded that in case of subdivision of thegenus Patella L., 1758, P. ferruginea and P. rustica shouldbe placed together in the subgenus Patellastra Mon-terosato,1884.
