The major pest of maize in Mediterranean Europe, the stem borer Sesamia nonagrioides (Lefèbvre) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), has a fragmented distribution, north and south of the Sahara. The present study aimed: (1) to clarify the uncertain taxonomic status of the Palearctic and sub‐Saharan populations which were first considered as different species and later on as subspecies (Sesamia nonagrioides nonagrioides and Sesamia nonagrioides botanephaga) and (2) to investigate the origin of the Palearctic population which extends from Spain to Iran, outside what is considered typical for this mainly tropical genus. We reconstructed the evolutionary history of both populations using one nuclear and two mitochondrial genes. The sub‐Saharan taxon was fragmented in two isolated populations (West and East) whose mitochondrial genes were distant by 2.3%. The Palearctic population was included in the East African clade and its genes were close or identical to those of a population from Central Ethiopia, where the species was discovered for the first time. Similarly, in Africa, the alleles of the nuclear gene were distributed mainly in two West and East clades, whereas some Palearctic alleles belonged to the West clade. The Palearctic population originated therefore from East and West Africa and is the progeny of the cross between these two African populations. The main species concepts were in agreement, leading to the conclusion that the three populations are still conspecific. In the surveyed regions, the species therefore does not include two subspecies but three isolated populations. The Palearctic population suffered from severe bottlenecks that resulted in the fixation of one East African mitochondrial genome and the large reduction in its genetic diversity compared to the African populations. The data suggest that natural colonization of the Palearctic region was more plausible than human introduction. The allelic distribution of the Palearctic population was similar to that of species that survived the last glaciation. It is concluded that the African populations expanded during the last interglacial, crossed the Sahara and mixed in North Africa where fixation of the East mitochondrial genome occurred. The species then colonized Europe westward through only one eastern entrance. Insect seed predation may vary depending on seed production. The present study considers the hypothesis that the rates of seed predation tend to be smaller in years of higher fruit production. Thus, we monitored the production of fruits and predation of seeds of the palm Syagrus romanzoffiana over 2?years in the Atlantic Forest (Parque Municipal da Lagoa do Peri, Florianópolis, SC, Brazil), between July 2006 and June 2008. Plots of 0.25?m2 were fitted under 20 mother plants and fruits were monthly collected for assessment of abundance and seed predation. There was variation in fruit production between the 2?years and among reproductive plants. Predation rates were high and occurred in the predispersal phase by the Curculionidae Revena rubiginosa Boheman, Anchylorhynchus aegrotus Fahraeus, and Anchylorhynchus variabilis Gyllenhal. Seed predation by these species of Anchylorhynchus is first registered in the present study. In average, about 60% of the seeds monthly produced in the population tend to escape insect predation in year of high or low production, becoming available for recruitment. The predation rate was not related to the amount of fruits produced per reproductive plant. Also, different than expected, there was a positive relation between the rates of seed predation and the total of fruits produced monthly on the plots. Thus, no evidence for the satiation of insect seed predators was found in this study with S. romanzoffiana. 相似文献

Abstract In parasitoids, host‐habitat odour can influence host searching within the habitat. This is the case in Leptopilina sp. (Hymenoptera, Figitidae), a Drosophila parasitoid searching for larvae by ovipositor probes. This a behaviour can be conditioned to fruit odours. In a previous study, the latency of probing to a fruit odour is reported to have a genetic variability within a laboratory strain. This suggests a link between rapidity of host discovery and fitness. In the present study, this hypothesis is tested by comparing responses to host‐habitat odours between two genotypes of Leptopilina heterotoma Thomson, from the Mediterranean coast (Antibes) and from Burgundy (Tailly). The two genotypes present contrasting rhythms and levels of locomotor activity linked to contrasting interspecific competition in their area of origin. The high activity observed in the Mediterranean genotype is interpreted as an adaptive response to a limited time‐window to win against a competitor species absent in Burgundy. The present study finds differentiation in innate but not learnt responses to host‐habitat odours. The more active genotype (Antibes) has a higher probability and a shorter latency of innate probing to the odours than the less active genotype (Tailly); Antibes females also find larvae and complete infestations more rapidly. Learning equalizes the probability and the latency of probing to the odours in both strains, and increases the probing duration. Innate responses to host‐habitat odours would allow time‐limited insects to increase their reproductive rate, when host predictability is high in the habitat. Selection of faster innate responses to host and habitat cues without evolution of learnt responses indicates that the initial host discovery is more crucial to fitness than subsequent ones. 相似文献

When the ambient temperature is lowered to an insect's lower thermal limit, the insect enters into chill coma. Chill coma temperature and chill coma recovery can vary within species as a result of thermal acclimation, although the physiological basis of the onset of chill coma remains poorly understood. The present study investigates how the temperature of acclimation (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 °C for 2 or 7 days) affects chill coma temperature and oxygen consumption in adult Alphitobius diaperinus Panzer (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae). It is hypothesized that the threshold decline in metabolic rate corresponds to the entry into chill coma. Oxygen consumption (as a proxy of metabolism) is measured across the chill coma temperature threshold, and a strong decline in oxygen consumption is expected at entry into chill coma. The acclimation decreases the chill coma temperature significantly from 6.6 ± 1.1 °C in control insects to 3.1 ± 0.7 °C in those acclimated to 10 °C. The change in metabolic rate (Q10) after acclimation to temperatures ranging from 10 to 20 °C is 3.7. Despite acclimation, the metabolic rate of A. diaperinus conforms to Arrhenius kinetics, suggesting that the response of this beetle does not show metabolic compensation. The data suggest the existence of a threshold decline in metabolic rate during cooling that coincides with the temperature at which an insect goes into chill coma. 相似文献

Background
Protection of pigs by vaccination against Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, the causative agent of porcine pleuropneumonia, is hampered by the presence of 15 different serotypes. A DIVA subunit vaccine comprised of detergent-released proteins from A. pleuropneumoniae serotypes 1, 2 and 5 has been developed and shown to protect pigs from clinical symptoms upon homologous and heterologous challenge. This vaccine has not been characterized in-depth so far. Thus we performed i) mass spectrometry in order to identify the exact protein content of the vaccine and ii) cross-serotype 2-D immunoblotting in order to discover cross-reactive antigens. By these approaches we expected to gain results enabling us to argue about the reasons for the efficacy of the analyzed vaccine. 相似文献19.

IMMUNOLOGICAL reactions in many species depend on two functionally different types of small lymphocytes, thymus-derived T lymphocytes and bone marrow-derived B lymphocytes1. In the mouse, the θ antigen is a marker for T lymphocytes, while membrane-bound Ig is found on θ-negative lymphocytes2. This has raised the question whether the presence of surface-bound Ig3 may be regarded as a marker for B lymphocytes.
