Predators can indirectly benefit prey populations by suppressing mid‐trophic level consumers, but often the strength and outcome of trophic cascades are uncertain. We manipulated oyster reef communities to test the generality of potential causal factors across a 1000‐km region. Densities of oyster consumers were weakly influenced by predators at all sites. In contrast, consumer foraging behaviour in the presence of predators varied considerably, and these behavioural effects altered the trophic cascade across space. Variability in the behavioural cascade was linked to regional gradients in oyster recruitment to and sediment accumulation on reefs. Specifically, asynchronous gradients in these factors influenced whether the benefits of suppressed consumer foraging on oyster recruits exceeded costs of sediment accumulation resulting from decreased consumer activity. Thus, although predation on consumers remains consistent, predator influences on behaviour do not; rather, they interact with environmental gradients to cause biogeographic variability in the net strength of trophic cascades.  相似文献

The utility of shallow water bodies in urban environments is frequently compromised either by dense beds of submerged plants or cyanobacterial blooms associated with nutrient enrichment. Although submerged plants are often harvested to facilitate recreational uses, this activity may alter the phytoplankton community, which in turn, also may restrict the use of the lake. We tested whether (i) plant harvesting reduced the abundance of flagellate algae and increased the abundance of cyanobacteria, and (ii) whether increasing levels of nutrient enrichment caused shifts in the dominance of heterocytous cyanobacteria, non-heterocytous cyanobacteria and Chlorophyta, in a shallow urban lake in Southern Australia as has been observed for shallow Danish lakes in previous studies. These predictions were tested with large (3000 l), replicated mesocosms in a warm, highly productive, shallow lake densely colonised by the submerged angiosperm, Vallisnaria americana Michaux. The heterokont algae, Chlorophyta, Cyanobacteria and Cryptophyta were the most numerous algal divisions in the lake. The Euglenophyta, although uncommon in early summer, became more abundant towards the end of summer. The Dinophyta and Charophyta were rare. The abundance of the heterokont algae and Euglenophyta was significantly reduced by plant harvesting even after plants had partially re-established 18 weeks after initial harvesting. The decline in the Euglenophyta in response to plant harvesting is consistent with earlier findings, that the relative abundance of flagellate algae tends to be greater in the presence of submerged plants. Contrary to our prediction, we found that the Cyanobacteria did not increase in response to plant harvesting, however the response may be altered under higher nutrient levels. Algal responses to nutrient enrichment in the presence of dense V. americana plants generally followed the patterns observed in shallow Danish lakes despite the large differences in climatic conditions. Both studies found that the abundance of heterocytous cyanobacteria declined at higher levels of nutrient enrichment, whereas non-heterocytous cyanobacteria and chlorophytes increased.  相似文献

We have recently demonstrated that ablation of one or both alleles of the proapoptotic gene Bim prevents the polycystic kidney disease (PKD) that develops in mice deficient for the prosurvival protein Bcl-2. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether loss of Bim or Bcl-2 could influence the disease in the PKD1del34/del34 mutant mice, a model of autosomal dominant PKD. PKD1del34/del34 mice were intercrossed with Bim-deficient mice and Bcl-2+/- mice to generate double mutants. Loss of Bim does not prevent the development of PKD in PKD1del34/del34 mice. On the C57BL/6 genetic background, most older PKD1del34/+ mice do not develop PKD, but present with liver cysts. Surprisingly, loss of Bim completely prevented liver cysts formation in PKD1del34/+ mice. Loss of one Bcl-2 allele did not influence the PKD1del34 phenotype significantly. We conclude that loss of PKD1 and loss of Bcl-2 elicit PKD through distinct mechanisms.  相似文献

Background and Aims

Plasticity in structural and functional traits related to water balance may determine plant performance and survival in ecosystems characterized by water limitation or high levels of rainfall variability, particularly in perennial herbaceous species with long generation cycles. This paper addresses whether and the extent to which several such seasonal to long-term traits respond to changes in moisture availability.

Methods

Using a novel approach that integrates ecology, physiology and anatomy, a comparison was made of lifetime functional traits in the root xylem of a long-lived perennial herb (Potentilla diversifolia, Rosaceae) growing in dry habitats with those of nearby individuals growing where soil moisture had been supplemented for 14 years. Traditional parameters such as specific leaf area (SLA) and above-ground growth were also assessed.

Key Results

Individuals from the site receiving supplemental moisture consistently showed significant responses in all considered traits related to water balance: SLA was greater by 24 %; roots developed 19 % less starch storing tissue, an indicator for drought-stress tolerance; and vessel size distributions shifted towards wider elements that collectively conducted water 54 % more efficiently – but only during the years for which moisture was supplemented. In contrast, above-ground growth parameters showed insignificant or inconsistent responses.

Conclusions

The phenotypic changes documented represent consistent, dynamic responses to increased moisture availability that should increase plant competitive ability. The functional plasticity of xylem anatomy quantified in this study constitutes a mechanistic basis for anticipating the differential success of plant species in response to climate variability and change, particularly where water limitation occurs.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to examine (a) the relationship between maximal oxygen uptake (VO(2)max) and several performance indices of multiple sprint cycling; (b) the relationship between maximal accumulated oxygen deficit (MAOD) and those same performance indices; and (c) the influence of recovery duration on the magnitude of those relationships. Twenty-five physically active men completed a VO(2)max test, a MAOD test, and 2 maximal intermittent (20 x 5 seconds) sprint cycling tests with contrasting recovery periods (10 seconds or 30 seconds). Mean +/- SD for age, height, and body mass were 20.6 +/- 1.5 years, 177.2 +/- 5.4 cm, and 78.2 +/- 8.2 kg, respectively. All tests were conducted on a friction-braked cycle ergometer with subsequent data normalized for body mass. Moderate (0.3 < or = r < 0.5) positive correlations were observed between power output data and MAOD (range, 0.31-0.46; 95% confidence limits, -0.10 to 0.72). Moderate to large positive correlations also were observed between power output data and VO(2)max, the magnitude of which increased as values were averaged across all sprints (range, 0.45-0.67; 95% confidence limits 0.07-0.84). Correlations between fatigue and VO(2)max were greater in the intermittent protocol with 30-second recovery periods (r = -0.34; 95% confidence limits, 0.06 to -0.65). The results of this study reflect the complex energetics associated with multiple sprint work. Though the findings add support to the idea that multiple sprint sports demand a combination of speed and endurance, further longitudinal research is required to confirm the relative importance of these parameters.  相似文献

The synthesis, crystal structures and magnetic properties of two different copper(II) complexes of formula [Cu(L1)(dca)]n · nClO4 (1) and [Cu(L2)]2(dca)(ClO4) (2) [L1 = N,N-dimethylethylene-N′-(pyridine-2-carbaldiiminato), HL2 = N,N-dimethylethylene-N′-salicylaldiiminato, dca = dicyanamide anion] are described. Spectroscopic and electrochemical properties have also been discussed. A one-dimensional chain structure with single, symmetrical, μ1,5-dca bridges is found in compound 1. The copper atom in 1 has a square pyramidal geometry. A tridentate Schiff base ligand, having NNN donor sites, and one nitrogen atom from dca occupy the basal plane. N(18) of a neighbouring unit occupies the apical site. The Schiff base used in compound 2 is a tridentate anion with NNO donor sites, which changes the structure in a dinuclear unit of copper atoms bridged by single end-to-end dicyanamide ion. The environment around copper in 2 is square planar. Magnetic susceptibility measurements for 1 and 2 reveal the occurrence of weak antiferromagnetic interaction through the dca ligand.  相似文献

A double-blind randomised trial was carried out among 46 patients undergoing elective colonic surgery; 27 patients received prophylactic metronidazole and 19 received placebo. Anaerobic infections did not develop in any of the metronidazole-treated patients, but did develop in 11 (58%) of 19 controls who were subsequently successfully treated with metronidazole.  相似文献

Advanced societies owe their success to an efficient division of labour that, in some social insects, is based on specialized worker phenotypes. The system of caste determination in such species is therefore critical. Here, we examine in a leaf-cutting ant (Acromyrmex echinatior) how a recently discovered genetic influence on caste determination interacts with the social environment. By removing most of one phenotype (large workers; LW) from test colonies, we increased the stimulus for larvae to develop into this caste, while for control colonies we removed a representative sample of all workers so that the stimulus was unchanged. We established the relative tendencies of genotypes to develop into LW by genotyping workers before and after the manipulation. In the control colonies, genotypes were similarly represented in the large worker caste before and after worker removal. In the test colonies, however, this relationship was significantly weaker, demonstrating that the change in environmental stimuli had altered the caste propensity of at least some genotypes. The results indicate that the genetic influence on worker caste determination acts via genotypes differing in their response thresholds to environmental cues and can be conceptualized as a set of overlapping reaction norms. A plastic genetic influence on division of labour has thus evolved convergently in two distantly related polyandrous taxa, the leaf-cutting ants and the honeybees, suggesting that it may be a common, potentially adaptive, property of complex, genetically diverse societies.  相似文献

A novel butanol fermentation process was developed in which sweet sorghum bagasse (SSB) was pretreated using liquid hot water (LHW) pretreatment technique followed by enzymatic hydrolysis and butanol (acetone butanol ethanol (ABE)) fermentation. A pretreatment temperature of 200 °C resulted in the generation of a hydrolyzate that inhibited butanol fermentation. When SSB pretreatment temperature was decreased to 190 °C (0-min holding time), the hydrolyzate was successfully fermented without inhibition and an ABE productivity of 0.51 g L?1 h?1 was achieved which is comparable to the 0.49 g L?1 h?1 observed in the control fermentation where glucose was used as a feedstock. These results are based on the use of 86 g L?1 SSB solid loadings in the pretreatment reactors. We were also able to increase SSB solid loadings from 120 to 200 g L?1 in the pretreatment step (190 °C) followed by hydrolysis and butanol fermentation. As pretreatment solid loadings increased, ABE yield remained in the range of 0.38–0.46. In these studies, a maximum ABE concentration of 16.88 g L?1 was achieved. Using the LHW pretreatment technique, 88.40–96.00 % of polymeric sugars (cellulose + hemicellulose) were released in the SSB hydrolyzate. The LHW pretreatment technique does not require chemical additions and is environmentally friendly, and the hydrolyzate can be used successfully for butanol fermentation.  相似文献
