This work aims to study the effect of the nutrient contents in the leaves of corn on the incidence of Spodopterafrugiperda (Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Dalbulus maidis (Delong & Wolcott) (Homoptera: Cicadellidae). The treatments were represented by unfertilized corn plants and corn plants fertilized with 250 kg of the formulation 4-14-8 (N- P-K) + 100 kg of ammonium sulfate (AS)/ha and 500 kg of the formulation 4-14-8 (N-P-K) +200 kg of AS/ha, arranged in randomized blocks with four replicates. Attacks by S. frugiperda and D. maidis were higher as the nitrogen, sulfur, calcium and copper content in the leaves of corn increased. The effects of calcium and copper found in this study were not consistent with that of lower susceptibility associated with higher levels of these nutrients mentioned in the literature. We believe that there was a cumulative effect of the nutrients altogether, building up a nutritiously better vegetable which in turn had less reserve for defense, or that the content of both nutrients in the leaves were not high enough to induce such effects.  相似文献

Gomes, M. A. F. and Sodek, L. 1987. Reproductive developmentand nitrogen fixation in soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merril).—J.exp. Bot. 38: 1982–1987. Nitrogenase activity (acetylene reduction) was measured duringthe growth cycle of soybean plants induced to flower at twodifferent ages. The decline in nitrogenase activity towardsthe end of the cycle was clearly associated with pod-fillingfor both flowering dates when plants were cultivated under lowerlight and temperature conditions (out of season). Under higherlight and temperature conditions (normal growing season) thedecline was independent of the flowering date. Furthermore, the timing of the decline was not altered when plants were maintainedunder long-day (vegetative) conditions nor when flowers wereremoved. It is suggested that under more favourable growth conditionsthe diversion of assimilates by the fruits is not the primarycause of the decline in nodule activity, but competition bythe fruits may be important when the production of photo-assimilatesis more limited. ABSTRACT. We have demonstrated previously that crystal violet induces a rapid, dose-related collapse of the inner mitochondrial membrane potential of Trypanosoma cruzi epimastigotes. In this work, we show that crystal violet-induced dissipation of the membrane potential was accompanied by an efflux of Ca2+ from the mitochondria. In addition, crystal violet inhibited the ATP-dependent, oligomycin-, and antimycin A-insensitive Ca2+ uptake by digitonin-permeabilired epimastigotes. Crystal violet also induced Ca2+ release from the mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum of digitonin-permeabilized trypomastigotes. Furthermore, crystal violet inhibited Ca2+ uptake and the (Ca2+-Mg2+)ATPase of a highly enriched plasma membrane fraction of epimastigotes, thus indicating an inhibition of other calcium transport mechanisms of the cells. Disruption of Ca2+ homeostasis by crystal violet may be a key process leading to trypanosome cell injury by this drug.  相似文献

The evolution of CAM in the subfamily Pitcairnioideae (Bromeliaceae)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A molecular phylogeny for the subfamily Pitcairnioideae was inferred to examine the distribution of crassulacean acid metabolism in the subfamily. For this purpose, a neighbour-joining tree with p-distances was built using a MatK chloroplast gene data set. The phylogenetic results of our analysis confirmed the monophyletic condition of most genera examined: Brocchinia , Dyckia , Encholirium , Fosterella , Hechtia and Puya . A paraphyletic basal sequence showed Hechtia branching off from the basal node, followed by Brocchinia , Cottendorfia  +  Navia phelpsiae, and Puya . The remaining taxa were divided into two groups: (a) Deuterocohnia meziana , Dyckia , Encholirium ; Fosterella ; Deuterocohnia spp. +  Pitcairnia heterophyla ; (b) Pepinia , Pitcairnia spp. and Navia igneosicola . The basal placement of the CAM genera Hecthia indicates that CAM may be a 'primitive condition' in Pitcairnioideae and that C3 species may have lost the ability to induce CAM. In this molecular tree, CAM metabolism appeared scattered throughout the tree. Current knowledge, however, does not exclude the possibility that CAM arose only once and it has been switching on and off in various lineages. Further detailed studies on photosynthetic metabolisms and the phylogenetic distribution of characters will provide a better basis on which to evaluate photosynthetic origins.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2003, 80 , 261–268.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. We report the characterization of cell-associated and extracellular peptidases of Bodo sp., a free-living flagellate of the Bodonidae family, order Kinetoplastida, which is considered ancestral to the trypanosomatids. This bodonid isolate is phylogenetically related to Bodo caudatus and Bodo curvifilus . The proteolytic activity profiles of Bodo sp. were determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis containing co-polymerized gelatin, casein, hemoglobin, or bovine serum albumin as substrates. The enzymatic complex degraded gelatin better in acidic pH, and under these conditions four proteolytic bands (120, 100, 90, and 75 kDa) were detected in the cellular or extracellular extracts. Two peptidases (250 and 200 kDa) were exclusively detected with the substrate casein. All these enzymes belong to the serine peptidase class, based on inhibition by aprotinin and phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride. This is the first biochemical characterization of peptidases in a free-living Bodo sp., potentially providing insight into the physiology of these protozoa and the evolutionary importance of peptidases to the order Kinetoplastida as some of these enzymes are important virulence factors in pathogenic trypanosomatids.  相似文献

1. We investigated the effects of riparian plant diversity (species number and identity) and temperature on microbially mediated leaf decomposition by assessing fungal biodiversity, fungal reproduction and leaf mass loss. 2. Leaves of five riparian plant species were first immersed in a stream to allow microbial colonisation and were then exposed, alone or in all possible combinations, at 16 or 24 °C in laboratory microcosms. 3. Fungal biodiversity was reduced by temperature but was not affected by litter diversity. Temperature altered fungal community composition with species of warmer climate, such as Lunulospora curvula, becoming dominant. 4. Fungal reproduction was affected by litter diversity, but not by temperature. Fungal reproduction in leaf mixtures did not differ or was lower than that expected from the weighted sum of fungal sporulation on individual leaf species. At the higher temperature, the negative effect of litter diversity on fungal reproduction decreased with the number of leaf species. 5. Leaf mass loss was affected by the identity of leaf mixtures (i.e. litter quality), but not by leaf species number. This was mainly explained by the negative correlation between leaf decomposition and initial lignin concentration of leaves. 6. At 24 °C, the negative effects of lignin on microbially mediated leaf decomposition diminished, suggesting that higher temperatures may weaken the effects of litter quality on plant litter decomposition in streams. 7. The reduction in the negative effects of lignin at the higher temperature resulted in an increased microbially mediated litter decomposition, which may favour invertebrate‐mediated litter decomposition leading to a depletion of litter stocks in streams.  相似文献

Minimum post-mortem intervals can be estimated based on analyses of the pattern of insect succession on a carcass. In order to successfully apply this approach, insect development rates must be considered with regard to local regional climatic conditions. This study is the first to analyse insect succession on carcasses decomposing in a sugarcane crop in Brazil. In all seasons, Chrysomya albiceps (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) and Cochliomyia macellaria (Fabricius) were frequent visitors during the fresh and bloated stages of decomposition, whereas Dermestes maculatus (De Geer) (Coleoptera: Dermistdae), Necrobia rufipes (De Geer) (Coleoptera: Cleridae) and Oxelytrum sp. (Coleoptera: Silphidae) were characteristic at the most advanced decomposition stages. The fact that climatic variations influence the occurrence of insect species and vegetation in the tropics may help to solve crimes through sampling of the local insect fauna, as may the fact that only certain groups of insects occur in specific regions of large countries like Brazil.  相似文献
