Inbreeding depression is a reduction of fitness in the progeny of closely related individuals and its effects are assigned to selfing or biparental inbreeding. Vriesea gigantea is a self‐compatible bromeliad species distributed in the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest and habitat destruction and fragmentation and collection have decreased the natural populations. We aim to describe the occurrence of inbreeding depression (δ) in three natural populations of V. gigantea and to correlate this phenomenon with previous studies of fertility, genetic diversity, population genetic structure, gene flow, mating system and seed dispersal in this species. Fifty‐four adult plants were sampled and 108 flowers were used for pollination treatments (selfing, outcrossing and control). For adult plants, we analysed plant and inflorescence height, flower numbers and seed set. In the progenies, evaluated parameters included seed germination and seedling survival rate. The results indicated low to moderate levels of inbreeding depression in V. gigantea (δ = 0.02 to 0.39), in agreement with molecular data from a previous study. Vriesea gigantea populations tolerate some degree of inbreeding, which is consistent with previous results on fertility, mating system, genetic diversity and gene flow. © 2012 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2012, 169 , 312–319.  相似文献

The structure of body size and shape divergence among populations of Poecilia vivipara inhabiting quaternary lagoons in South-eastern Brazil was studied. This species is abundant throughout an environmental gradient formed by water salinity differences. The salinity gradient influences the habitat structure (presence of macrophytes) and the fish community (presence of large predators). Size and shape variation within and among populations was quantified by geometric morphometrics and analysed by indirect and direct gradient ordinations, using salinity and geography as a framework. Morphological divergence was associated with the salinity gradient. The evolutionary allometries observed were independent of within-group static allometries. Sexually dimorphic patterns were observed in size variation and within-population allometries. Specimens from freshwater (higher predation) sites presented smaller sizes, relatively longer caudal regions, lower anterior regions and a ventrally displaced eye. These features are consistent with an ecomorphological paradigm for aquatic organisms from populations subject to intense predation. Reproductive biology and plant fertility are directly related to many aspects of plant evolution and conservation biology. Vriesea friburgensis is an epiphytic and terrestrial bromeliad endemic to the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest. Hand‐pollination experiments were used to examine the reproductive system in a wild population of V. friburgensis. Plant fertility was assigned considering flower production, fruit and seed set, seed germination, and pollen viability. Self‐sterility observed from spontaneous selfing and manual self‐pollination treatments may be the consequence of late‐acting self‐incompatibility. Hand‐pollination results indicated no pollen limitation in the population studied. Floral biology features such as a few daily open flowers, nectar production, and sugar concentration corroborate hummingbirds as effective pollinators, although bees were also documented as pollinators. Components of fitness such as high flower, fruit, and seed production together with high seed and pollen viability indicate that this wild population is viable. From a conservation point of view, we highlight that this self‐sterile species depends on pollinator services to maintain its population fitness and viability through cross‐pollination. Currently, pollinators are not limited in this population of V. friburgensis. Conversely, the maintenance and continuous conservation of this community is essential for preserving this plant–pollinator mutualism.  相似文献

Stomatal size and frequency as well as structure and distributionof leaf waxes were compared in seedlings of two varieties ofTheobroma cacao and three families of Hevea brasiliensis. Stomataof both species were located on the abaxial leaf surface only.The stomata of Theobroma averaged 45% shorter and 29% narrowerthan those of Hevea, but stomatal frequency was 44% higher inTheobroma. Stomatal size and frequency differed more among Heveafamilies than between Theobroma varieties. The structure ofthe leaf waxes of Theobroma and Hevea differed appreciably.It also varied greatly between the abaxial and adaxial leafsurfaces of Hevea, but only slightly in Theobroma. The structureof leaf waxes varied little between Theobroma varieties or amongHevea families. Leaf conductances and transpiration rates weremuch higher in Hevea than in Theobroma seedlings. The implicationsof water relations in interplanting of Theobroma and Hevea arediscussed. The effect of long-term (30 days) NaCl treatments (100 mM and 200 mM) on the activity of some antioxidant enzymes, level of antioxidant metabolites, water relations and chloroplast ultrastructure, was studied in potato (Solanum tuberosum cv. Désirée) leaves. Salt stress negatively affected relative water content, leaf stomatal conductance and transpiration rate. In treated plants, proline was enhanced, but there was a significant decrease in ascorbate and proteins. Total superoxide dismutase activity was increased. The isozyme patterns detected in native gels from salt-irrigated plants were not changed although all the isoforms appeared more heavily stained due to higher activity. In contrast, at both levels of NaCl, catalase activity decreased and ascorbate peroxidase activity showed no significant change in comparison with an untreated control. At ultrastructural level, only thylakoid swelling and a decrease in the amount of grana stacking was observed in treated plants. The overall behaviour of the antioxidant enzymes suggests an increase of cellular H2O2 that would contribute to the oxidative stress of potato plants, but which may be alleviated somewhat by the enhanced levels of proline.  相似文献

1. We investigated the resistance of aquatic microbial decomposers to Cu and Zn stress and their ability to recover after release from metal exposure, by examining leaf mass loss, fungal reproduction and microbial biomass and diversity.
2. Alder leaves, colonised in a reference stream, were exposed in microcosms to copper (Cu) or zinc (Zn), alone or in mixtures, with metals added together or sequentially (at day 0 or after 10 days). After 20 days, half of the microcosms were released from metals.
3. Leaf mass loss and fungal reproduction were reduced in most metal treatments, and the structure of fungal and bacterial communities was altered as indicated by identification of conidia and DNA fingerprinting based on denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis. Metals reduced the biomass of bacteria, but not that of fungi.
4. After release from metal stress, the structure of fungal communities became similar to that of control, and a recovery of microbial activity seemed to occur as shown by the lack of differences in leaf mass loss, bacterial biomass and fungal reproduction between control and metal treatments.  相似文献

The lizard genus Kentropyx (Squamata: Teiidae) comprises nine species, which have been placed in three species groups (calcarata group, associated to forests ecosystems; paulensis and striata groups, associated to open ecosystems). We reconstructed phylogenetic relationships of Kentropyx based on morphology (pholidosis and coloration) and mitochondrial DNA data (12S and 16S), using maximum parsimony and Bayesian methods, and evaluated biogeographic scenarios based on ancestral areas analyses and molecular dating by Bayesian methods. Additionally, we tested the life‐history hypothesis that species of Kentropyx inhabiting open ecosystems (under seasonal environments) produce larger clutches with smaller eggs and that species inhabiting forest ecosystems (under aseasonal conditions) produce clutches with fewer and larger eggs, using Stearns’ phylogenetic‐subtraction method and canonical phylogenetic ordination to take in to account the effects of phylogeny. Our results showed that Kentropyx comprises three monophyletic groups, with K. striata occupying a basal position in opposition to previous suggestions of relationships. Additionally, Bayesian analysis of divergence time showed that Kentropyx may have originated at the Tertiary (Eocene/Oligocene) and the ‘Pleistocene Refuge Hypothesis’ may not explain the species diversification. Based on ancestral reconstruction and molecular dating, we argued that a savanna ancestor is more likely and that historical events during the Tertiary of South America promoted the differentiation of the genus, coupled with recent Quaternary events that were important as dispersion routes and for the diversification at populational levels. Clutch size and egg volume were not significantly different between major clades and ecosystems of occurrence, even accounting for the phylogenetic effects. Finally, we argue that phylogenetic constraints and phylogenetic inertia might be playing essential roles in life history evolution of Kentropyx.  相似文献
