How complete can cervical screening be? The outcome of a call screening programme for women aged 20–60 years in Perth and Kinross

In this paper a computer system for cervical screening call and recall based on the Community Health Index (CHI) population data-base is described. It allows the unscreened population to be identified and located on an individual general practice basis. The results of the call programme on 9517 women aged 20-60 years listed on the CHI and with no record of a cervical smear is described. There was a 24% smear uptake in the call programme which meant that after the call programme the total population cover had risen from 71% to 78%. In addition, if women with a valid reason are excluded, and the data-base corrected for women no longer in the area, the true cover rises to 88%. An analysis of the percentage cover in each GP practice is described with the implications for implementation of screening targets for primary care.     

Inhibition of Stomatal Opening by Analogues of Abscisic Acid

Twenty analogues of abscisic acid have been tested for theiractivity as inhibitors of stomatal opening in isolated epidermisof Commelina communis. A number of derivatives showed slightactivity but only two treatments resulted in significant stomatalclosure and this was accompanied by destruction of the guardcell membranes. Such damage is characteristic of the stomatalresponse to farnesol, another sesquiterpenoid also thought tobe involved in control of water loss. The implication of theseresults in the study of antitranspirants is considered.     

Impacts of a volcanic eruption on the forest bird community of Montserrat, Lesser Antilles

Volcanic eruptions are an important and natural source of catastrophic disturbance to ecological communities. However, opportunities to study them are relatively rare. Here we report on the effects of the eruption of the Soufrière Hills volcano on the forest bird community of the Lesser Antillean island of Montserrat. The island's species-poor avifauna includes 11 restricted-range species, including the Critically Endangered endemic Montserrat Oriole Icterus oberi . Analysis of monitoring data from 1997 to 2005 indicates that counts of most species were substantially lower following major ashfalls. However, this effect was short-lived, with rapid population recovery in subsequent years. Furthermore, levels of seasonal rainfall appear to have been at least as important in determining population trends as ashfall. Overall, most species were at least as abundant at the end of the study as at the start, and no forest bird species have been extirpated from Montserrat. We discuss potential ecological drivers of ashfall impacts on populations: there is some evidence that terrestrial foragers were most severely affected.     

DNA fingerprinting provides evidence of discriminate suckling and non-random mating in little brown bats Myotis lucifugus

Recent advances in DNA extraction and fingerprinting techniques allowed examination of genetic similarity of groups of Myotis lucifugus at maternity roosts. Mean percentage band-sharing between young was significantly higher than between mothers, suggesting fertilization success skewed for individual males or male lineages. Mean percentage band-sharing between presumed mothers and young was significantly higher than band-sharing between all other groups, suggesting that Myotis lucifugus preferentially suckle their own young.
