We examined phylogenetic relationships among halobatine water striders (Hemiptera, Gerridae) using molecular and morphological data. The molecular data set was 780 bp DNA sequence data from the 3' half of the mitochondria! gene encoding cytochrome oxidase subunit I from 19 species of sea skaters, Halobates , and one species from each of three related genera, Asclepios annandalei, Austrobates rivularis , and Eurymetra natalensis. The morphological data set was a slightly modified version of a previously published data set. Unweighted parsimony analyses of the molecular data set gave one tree with weak support for most branches. Maximum likelihood analysis of the same data set gave a tree with slightly different topology, but reveiled many of the clades found in parsimony analyses of the morphological data set. Parsimony analyses of the combined molecular + morphology data sets gave a better resolved and better supported tree than did analyses of any single data set. The phytogeny of Halobates presented here allows a more rigorous evaluation of several prior hypotheses about evolutionary processes in marine water striders. In particular, it supports the hypothesis of at least two separate transitions from coastal to oceanic environments.  相似文献

Abstract In arid and semiarid environments surface‐water strongly constrains the distribution and abundance of large herbivores during the dry season. Surprisingly, we know very little about its variability in natural ecosystems. Here we used long‐term data on the dry‐season occurrence of water at individual waterholes to model the surface‐water availability across Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe, under contrasted climatic and management scenarios. Without artificial pumping only 19.6% of the park occurred within 5 km of water under average climatic conditions. However surface‐water availability was strongly influenced by annual rainfall, and over 20 years the variability of the surface area of the park occurring within 5 km of water was slightly larger than the variability of rainfall. This contrasts with the usual buffered response of vegetation production to rainfall fluctuations, and suggests that the variability in dry‐season foraging range determined by surface‐water availability could be the main mechanism regulating the population dynamics of large herbivores in this environment. Artificial pumping increased surface‐water availability and reduced its variability over time. Because changes in surface‐water availability could cause the greatest changes in forage availability for large herbivores, we urge ecologists to investigate and report on the variability of surface‐water in natural ecosystems, particularly where rapid climate changes are expected.  相似文献

The Mediterranean Sea is one of the largest obstacles that has to be crossed by Palearctic birds migrating from Europe to Africa; it thus offers a good opportunity to study variations in migratory behaviour of birds facing a major ecological barrier. Using a passive infrared device, the flight directions of nocturnal migrants were determined and flight altitudes estimated at ten sites along the French and Spanish coast of the Mediterranean Sea in September and October 1995. The variation of migratory intensity, flight direction and altitude in the course of the night was examined. The highest density of migration was recorded within the first hour after sunset, followed by relatively high densities over the next several hours, and a progressive decrease in the last third of the night. In spite of broad variation in the course of the coastline relative to the basic directions of migration and specific reactions of the migrants to the local conditions, a decrease in seaward migration corresponding to an increase in landward migration from the first to the second half of the night was a general feature at nearly all sites. The results suggest a shift in the motivation of the birds depending on the time of arrival in a coastal area, leading to an adjustment in the flight behaviour of nocturnal migrants.  相似文献

Abstract. The effects of the blood anticoagulants sodium citrate and sodium heparin on horn fly, Haematobia irritans L., egg production were tested. Sodium citrate was added to freshly collected bovine blood to give final concentrations of 5-100mM while sodium heparin was used in concentrations of 10–70 USP units/ml blood. Small cages containing five male and ten female newly emerged laboratory-reared horn flies were maintained for 8–10 days on these blood samples, and mortality and egg production recorded daily. Results showed that as blood citrate concentration was increased, egg production decreased logarithmically. At sodium citrate concentrations of 50 mM and above, severe impacts on egg production and adult horn fly survival occurred. Although no dose-related response of egg production to increasing heparin concentrations was noted, the 25 USP units heparin/ml blood treatments gave the largest egg production, yielding approximately 28% more eggs than any other treatment. Since citrate is a known chelator of divalent metal cations, the effects of supplemental cation additions to citrated blood were tested for their ability to reverse the egg production decrease seen at 50 mM sodium citrate. Blood samples containing 50mM sodium citrate were supplemented with CaCl2, calcium lactate, CuCl2, cupric acetate, FeCl3, ferric citrate, MgCl2, magnesium acetate, MnCl2, ZnSO4, EGTA or EGTA plus calcium lactate, each at 1 mM except EGTA which was used at 2.5 mM. The magnesium acetate supplement and the combination of calcium lactate plus EGTA resulted in a statistically significant increase in egg production ( P < 0.05).  相似文献

Adaptation of guppies (Poecilia reticulata) to contrasting upland and lowland habitats has been extensively studied with respect to behaviour, morphology and life history traits. Yet population history has not been studied at the whole‐genome level. Although single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are the most abundant form of variation in many genomes and consequently very informative for a genome‐wide picture of standing natural variation in populations, genome‐wide SNP data are rarely available for wild vertebrates. Here we use genetically mapped SNP markers to comprehensively survey genetic variation within and among naturally occurring guppy populations from a wide geographic range in Trinidad and Venezuela. Results from three different clustering methods, Neighbor‐net, principal component analysis (PCA) and Bayesian analysis show that the population substructure agrees with geographic separation and largely with previously hypothesized patterns of historical colonization. Within major drainages (Caroni, Oropouche and Northern), populations are genetically similar, but those in different geographic regions are highly divergent from one another, with some indications of ancient shared polymorphisms. Clear genomic signatures of a previous introduction experiment were seen, and we detected additional potential admixture events. Headwater populations were significantly less heterozygous than downstream populations. Pairwise FST values revealed marked differences in allele frequencies among populations from different regions, and also among populations within the same region. FST outlier methods indicated some regions of the genome as being under directional selection. Overall, this study demonstrates the power of a genome‐wide SNP data set to inform for studies on natural variation, adaptation and evolution of wild populations  相似文献

The history, philosophy, and application of the concept of the Global Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) are reviewed. Geochronologic units defined by GSSPs serve as practical classificatory pigeonholes for the subdivision of geologic time. Accordingly, the main factor involved in the definition of GSSPs must be global correlatability. Early opposition to the GSSP concept centered around the desire for a traditional biochronologic time scale defined conceptually in terms of palaeobiological events, but such time scales are inherently unstable and thus unsuitable for the use of all geoscientists. The GSSP concept is also generally incompatible with the desire for 'natural' geochronologic boundaries. GSSPs have been defined mainly on the basis of biostratigraphic guiding criteria, but magnetic polarity reversals and chemostratigraphic and cyclostratigraphic horizons are now playing an important role. Most primary guiding criteria used to place a 'golden spike' will eventually become problematical in some way, so GSSPs should be defined so as to be correlatable by as many different lines of age-significant information as possible. The 'Global Standard Stratigraphic Age' (better renamed 'Standard Global Numerical Age') is a numerical analogue of the golden spike. Numerical definitions are currently appropriate for the formal subdivision of the Precambrian, and perhaps also for the Pleistocene/Holocene boundary. Recent suggestions to abandon chronostratigraphic terms (system, series, stage) in favor of geochronologic terms (period, epoch, age) are logically defensible, but could perpetuate the continuing confusion between various stratigraphic categories.  相似文献

Although differential selective pressures on males and females of the same species may result in sex‐specific evolutionary trajectories, comparative studies of adaptive radiations have largely neglected within‐species variation. In this study, we explore the potential effects of natural selection, sexual selection, or a combination of both, on bite performance in males and females of 19 species of Liolaemus lizards. More specifically, we study the evolution of bite performance, and compare evolutionary relationships between the variation in head morphology, bite performance, ecological variation and sexual dimorphism between males and females. Our results suggest that in male Liolaemus, the variation in bite force is at least partly explained by the variation in the degree of sexual dimorphism in head width (i.e. our estimate of the intensity of sexual selection), and neither bite force nor the morphological variables were correlated with diet (i.e. our proxy for natural selection). On the contrary, in females, the variation in bite force and head size can, to a certain extent, be explained by variation in diet. These results suggest that whereas in males, sexual selection seems to be operating on bite performance, in the case of females, natural selection seems to be the most likely and most important selective pressure driving the variation in head size. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 101 , 461–475.  相似文献
