Comparison of recent and historical surveys of frog populations in cloudforest habitat in Sierra de las Minas, Guatemala, indicated population declines and local extirpation of several species. Pathological exams of diseased tadpoles indicated infection by amphibian chytridiomycosis. The local habitat has been severely altered by recent establishment of large-scale leatherleaf fern production. A minimum medical GIS database (MMDb) for Europe 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) technologies are being used increasingly to study the spatial and temporal patterns of some parasitic diseases of medical and veterinary importance. At the same time, the incorporation of GIS in this field shows the scarcity of the data and images available, which sometime discourage researchers that still look at GIS as a system too difficult and unusable for medical study. Aware of this problem and supported by success of earlier MMDb's for Africa, Asia and South America, the authors' aim is to construct and offer an MMDb for Europe. The initial MMDb is composed with vector images covering an area situated from -11 degrees-70 degrees N to 58 degrees-30 degrees E. Specifically, data layers include: a) Global Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) 16 days at 250 m spatial resolution designed to provide consistent spatial and temporal comparisons of vegetation conditions, supplied in the MMDb as seasonal and annual composite images from 2000 to 2003, b) MODIS Land Surface Temperature (LST) calculated from daytime and nighttime observations at 8 day intervals at 1 km spatial resolution, supplied in the MMDb as seasonal and annual composites images for day (maximum) temperatures, night (minimum) temperatures from 2000 to 2003, c) GTOPO30 Digital Elevation Model (DEM) at 1 km spatial resolution, d) United States Geological Survey (USGS) Land use/land cover scheme, e) USGS actual and potential evapotranspiration supplied for all 12 months as a grid at 50 km spatial resolution, f) USGS precipitation showing the amount of rainfall for all 12 months supplied as a grid at 50 km spatial resolution, g) USGS shapefiles of administrative and political boundaries, cities, towns, villages, lakes, rivers, streams, road, railroads and more. The MMDb projection will be in geographic latitude-longitude, decimal degree format. This global format is most commonly used for public access map database resources and can be readily re-projected as needed for compatibility with various national mapping systems. There is no "required" software, and end users need only common commercial GIS software packages that have mutual import-export functions. Meiotic recombination is not random along chromosomes; rather, there are preferred regions for initiation called hotspots. Although the general properties of meiotic hotspots are known, the requirements at the DNA sequence level for the determination of hotspot activity are still unclear. The sequence of six known hotspots in Saccharomyces cerevisiae was compared to identify a common homology region (CoHR). They reported that the locations of CoHR sequences correspond to mapped double-strand break (DSB) sites along three chromosomes (I, III, VI). We report here that a deletion of CoHR at HIS2, a hotspot used to identify the motif, has no significant effect on recombination. In the absence of CoHR, DSB formation occurs at a high frequency and at the same sequences as in wild-type strains. In cases where the deletion of sequences containing the CoHR motif has been shown to reduce recombination, we propose that it may be a reflection of the location of the deletion, rather than the loss of CoHR, per se. 相似文献

Glucocorticoid hormones induce apoptosis in lymphoid cells. This process requires de novo RNA/protein synthesis. Here we report the identification and cloning of a novel dexamethasone-induced gene designated dig2. Using Affymetrix oligonucleotide microarray analysis of approximately 10,000 genes and expressed sequence tags, we found that the expression of dig2 mRNA is significantly induced not only in the murine T cell lymphoma lines S49.A2 and WEHI7.2 but also in normal mouse thymocytes following dexamethasone treatment. This result was confirmed by Northern blot analysis. The induction of dig2 mRNA by dexamethasone appears to be mediated through the glucocorticoid receptor as it is blocked in the presence of RU486, a glucocorticoid receptor antagonist. Furthermore, we demonstrated that dig2 is a novel stress response gene, as its mRNA is induced in response to a variety of cellular stressors including thapsigargin, tunicamycin, and heat shock. In addition, the levels of dig2 mRNA were up-regulated after treatment with the apoptosis-inducing chemotherapeutic drug etoposide. Though the function of dig2 is unknown, dig2 appears to have a pro-survival function, as overexpression of dig2 reduces the sensitivity of WEHI7.2 cells to dexamethasone-induced apoptosis. 相似文献

Chimpanzee research plays a central role in the discussions of conflict negotiation. Reconciliation, or the attraction and
affiliation of former opponents following conflict, has been proposed as a central element of conflict negotiation in chimpanzees
and various other taxa. In an attempt to expand the database of chimpanzee conflict resolution, conflict and post-conflict
behavior were recorded for a small group of socially housed chimpanzees at the Chimpanzee and Human Communication Institute,
at Central Washington University. Data were collected over six 6-week periods between 1997 and 2000, for a total of 840 hours
of observation, resulting in a substantial post-conflict (PC) and matched control (MC) data set. The data demonstrate this
group’s tendencies to maintain visual contact and closer proximity after conflicts. Dyadic corrected conciliatory tendencies
ranged between 0 – 37.5% and averaged 17.25% across all dyads. Individual corrected conciliatory tendencies ranged between
5.8 and 32%. The results of this study combined with recent publications on captive and free-ranging chimpanzee post-conflict
behavior suggest that variation in post-conflict behavior may be important to our understanding of chimpanzee conflict negotiation,
and may also have implications for the design and management of captive chimpanzee enclosures and social groups, respectively. 相似文献

To address the need for new approaches to antibiotic drug development, we have identified a large number of essential genes for the bacterial pathogen, Staphylococcus aureus, using a rapid shotgun antisense RNA method. Staphylococcus aureus chromosomal DNA fragments were cloned into a xylose-inducible expression plasmid and transformed into S. aureus. Homology comparisons between 658 S. aureus genes identified in this particular antisense screen and the Mycoplasma genitalium genome, which contains 517 genes in total, yielded 168 conserved genes, many of which appear to be essential in M. genitalium and other bacteria. Examples are presented in which expression of an antisense RNA specifically reduces its cognate mRNA. A cell-based, drug-screening assay is also described, wherein expression of an antisense RNA confers specific sensitivity to compounds targeting that gene product. This approach enables facile assay development for high throughput screening for any essential gene, independent of its biochemical function, thereby greatly facilitating the search for new antibiotics. 相似文献

C57Bl/6 mice with the lpr mutation of Fas (CD95) were tested for deviation from the genetically restricted antibody response to the hapten 4-hydroxy-3-nitrophenyl acetyl (NP). lambda1+ germinal centers (GC) with the canonical v186.2 V(H) gene element develop in lpr/lpr mice with the same time course as in wild-type (+/+) mice. In contrast to +/+ mice, however, lambda1+ GC persist in the spleens of lpr/lpr mice 25 days after immunization. Virtually all of the lambda1+ GC are reactive with NP 10 days after immunization. Sixteen days after immunization, however, many of the lambda1+ GC are not reactive with NP, and few of the lambda1+ GC are reactive with NP 25 days after immunization. The V(H) gene elements of three lambda1+NP- GC 25 days after immunization are derived by somatic mutation of v186.2, but have lost reactivity with NP. The mutated VDJs from these GC react with cells in spleen sections from +/+ and lpr/lpr mice, indicating that they represented secondary antibody responses induced by self antigens that are available as presented antigen. These data indicate that Fas-mediated apoptosis serves to eliminate a (limited) population of B cells that acquire reactivity to "self antigens" by somatic mutation of VDJs in the GC. 相似文献
