Gynandromorphs of Culex nigripalpus Theobald (2), Cx. pedroi Sirivanakarn and Belkin (1) and Aedes albopictus (Skuse) (2) are described. Two individuals of the latter species were reared in the laboratory, while the remaining three specimens were wild-caught with different traps in rural areas in Valle del Cauca department, southwestern Colombia. All of the individuals were mounted on microscopic slides with Canada balsam. From each mosquito, main morphological characteristics are described and illustrated. Due to the paucity of information about this subject, these findings as well as other relevant cases are discussed.  相似文献

The addition of C2 to HCN is of relevant interest in astrochemistry. We studied the pathways of this addition to produce CCCN and estimated its reaction rate using the Master Equation in the circumstellar environment. From the results of this study, it was possible to show that a different pathway in the Surface Potential Energy-PES can also be investigated. In a circumstellar envelop environment, with temperatures varying between 1000 K and 2000 K, the abundances of these species are favorable to this kind of addition, and our branching ratio for the rate constant showed that the new pathway is more favorable in comparison with other possibilities for this range of temperatures in this environment, and must be taken into account in any computation of the rate constant.

Histological and ultrastructural alterations in lung tissue of BALB/c mice infected with dengue virus serotype 2 (non-neuroadapted), by intraperitoneal and intravenous routes were analyzed. Lung tissues were processed following the standard techniques for photonic and electron transmission microscopies. Histopathological and ultrastructural studies showed interstitial pneumonia, characterized by the presence of mononuclear cells. In the mouse model, the dengue virus serotype 2 seems to led to a transient inflammatory process without extensive damage to the interalveolar septa, but caused focal alterations of the blood-exchange barrier. Endothelial cells of blood capillaries exhibited phyllopodia suggesting activation by presence of dengue virus. Morphometrical analysis of mast cells showed an expressive increase of the number of these cells in peribronchiolar spaces and adjacent areas to the interalveolar septa. Alveolar macrophages showed particles dengue virus-like inside rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi complex, suggesting viral replication. The tissue alterations observed in our experimental model were similar to the observed in human cases of dengue fever and dengue hemorrhagic fever. Our results show that BALB/c mice are permissive host for dengue virus serotype 2 replication and therefore provides an useful model to study of morphological aspects of dengue virus infection.  相似文献

Setting

Public hospital emergency room (ER) in Porto Alegre, Brazil, a setting with high prevalence of tuberculosis (TB) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.

Objective

To determine the prevalence of PTB, using a symptom based active case finding (ACF) strategy in the ER of a public hospital in an area with high prevalence of TB and HIV, as well as variables associated with pulmonary TB diagnosis.

Methods

Cross sectional study. All patients ≥18 years seeking care at the ER were screened for respiratory symptoms and those with cough ≥2 weeks were invited to provide a chest radiograph and two unsupervised samples of sputum for acid-fast bacilli smear and culture.

Results

Among 31,267 admissions, 6,273 (20.1%) reported respiratory symptoms; 197 reported cough ≥2 weeks, of which pulmonary TB was diagnosed in 30. In multivariate analysis, the variables associated with a pulmonary tuberculosis diagnosis were: age (OR 0.94, 95% CI: 0.92–0.97; p<0.0001), sputum production (OR 0.18, 95% CI 0.06–0.56; p = 0.003), and radiographic findings typical of TB (OR 12.11, 95% CI 4.45–32.93; p<0.0001).

Conclusions

This study identified a high prevalence of pulmonary TB among patients who sought care at the emergency department of a tertiary hospital, emphasizing the importance of regular screening of all comers for active TB in this setting.  相似文献

Several classes of antidiabetic agents have been developed that achieve their hypoglycemic outcomes via various molecular mechanisms. Adipose tissue is a major metabolic and energy-storing tissue and plays an important role in many metabolic pathways, including insulin signaling and insulin sensitivity. Adipose tissue monitors and regulates whole body homeostasis via production and release of potent proteins, such as adipokine and adiponectin, into the circulation. Therefore, any agent that can modulate adipocyte metabolism can, in turn, affect metabolic and glucose homeostatic pathways. Antidiabetic drugs are not only recognized primarily as hypoglycemic agents but may also alter adipose tissue itself, as well as adipocyte-derived adipokine expression and secretion. In the current review, we present the major evidence concerning routinely used antidiabetic agents on adipocyte metabolism and adipokine expression.  相似文献

Cheliped loss through autotomy is a common reflexive response in decapod crustaceans. Cheliped loss has direct and indirect effects on feeding behavior which can affect population dynamics and the role of species in the community. In this study, we assessed the impact of autotomy (0, 1, or 2 cheliped loss) on feeding behavior in the crab Pachygrapsus transversus, an omnivorous and abundant species that inhabits subtropical intertidal rocky shores along the South Atlantic Ocean. Autotomy altered crab feeding patterns and foraging behavior; however, the time spent foraging on animal prey or algae was not affected. These results indicate a plasticity of feeding behavior in P. transversus, allowing them to maintain feeding when injured.  相似文献

We used a slide culture technique to detect tubercle bacilli surviving in sputum smears (n=46) after conventional heat fixation and Ziehl-Neelsen staining. In all heat-fixed sputum smears, tubercle bacilli survived after time 0 (n=22), 24 h (n=7), 48 h (n=7), 72 h (n=4), and seven days (n=6). None of the stained sputum smears showed growth on slide cultures. Viable tubercle bacilli remaining in heat-fixed sputum smears for at least seven days may present an infection risk to laboratory staff. Thus, sputum smears should be stained immediately by the Ziehl-Neelsen method or stored in a safe container to avoid transmission of tuberculosis.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of T3 on amino acid accumulation and on the membrane potential of Sertoli cells of immature rat testes. Testes of pre-pubertal and pubertal rats were pre-incubated (30 min) in Krebs-Ringer bicarbonate buffer and incubated in the presence of [14C]methylaminoisobutyric acid with and without T3 for 15, 45 and 60 min. The hormone (10(-6) M and 10(-7) M) significantly stimulated amino acid accumulation in 6 and 13-day old rat testes but did not have any effect in neonatal and pubertal animals. T3 produced a dose-dependent hyperpolarizing effect at concentrations of 10(-6) M, 10(-5) M, 2 x 10(-5) M and 10(-4) M. We conclude that T3 induces a membrane hyperpolarization in Sertoli cells and stimulates amino acid accumulation in immature rat testes, demonstrating that the hormone has a rapid plasma membrane action.  相似文献

Summary Tamarind, a multipurpose tropical tree species, is economically important for sustainable development of wasteland due to its hardy nature and adaptability to various agroclimatic ocnditions. Reports on in vitro morphogenesis in this species are limited, due to its recalcitrant and callogenic nature. To overcome these limitations, an attempt was made to induce meristematic activity in seedling explants. Seedlings were germinated in medium with or without thidiazuron (4.54, 9.08, 13.12, 18.16 μM). This growth regulator restricted the differentiation of the apical meristem to form shoots. It triggered proliferation of the meristematic tissue at the cotyledonary node and a large number of meristematic buds appeared in a ridial pattern around the node. The meristematic activity extended to the junction of the epicotyl and hypocotyl, giving rise to buds in the form of protuberances in all sides of the junction. These buds differentiated to form shoot primordia and subsequently to shoots in medium devoid of growth regulators. Plants developed by micrografting of these shoots on seedling-derived rootstocks survived in soil.  相似文献
