Habitats of Early Tithonian ammonites of Western Tethys are inferred from analysis of faunal spectra, functional morphology. facies characteristics and palaeogeography. Phylloceratina and Lytoceratina are included in a pelagic group characterized by taxa which could reach bathyal depths. This group is very abundant and dominant in some localities. A neritic nektobenthic group, relatively abundant in the Cmbria-Marche Apennines only. is composed of taxa characterired by species bearing simple sutures (some Simoceratidae and Pseudolissoceras ). probably living at shallower depth. The habitat of Haplploceras and some Oppeliidae. is interpreted to be close to the shelf margin/continental slope. Perisphinctids. Aspidoceratidae and some other Oppeliidae are provisionally included in an 'indeterminate' group including deep and shallow taxa. Quantitative studies of assemblage composition and comparison of faunal spectra successions from different pelagic regions allow the characterization of different pelagic environments. Diversity of mitochondrial DNA of the endangered white-clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius italicus) in the Po River catchment 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
1. The strong contraction of the European populations of white‐clawed crayfish has stimulated research of its population genetics. As part of a conservation project to introduce and improve Italian populations of Austropotamobius italicus, the genetic diversity of 16 populations from 10 tributaries of the Po River drainage was evaluated by sequencing a 494 bp length of cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI mtDNA). 2. The evolutionary tree topologies and the parsimony network of 26 haplotypes separated into two clusters, on the basis of high average genetic distance (6.51 ± 0.42%). This finding indicated the presence of distinct evolutionary lineages, other than different allopatric sources. 3. An ancestral haplotype (Nav) was identified and 13 haplotypes, found mainly as singletons, were independently connected to Nav by short branches with one mutation site. Unimodal mismatch distribution and the goodness‐of‐fit of the observed data reflected a model of sudden population expansion, after the last glacial bottleneck event. 4. A general moderate level of genetic variability (h = 0.22–0.7 and π = 0.045–0.27%) was highlighted within A. italicus populations inhabiting Alpine and Apennine tributaries of the Po River. Analysis of molecular variance (amova ) revealed significant genetic structuring across all hierarchical levels, indicating that a major proportion of genetic variance is structured among localities within drainages. Multiple adjacent localities, strictly connected by the Po River, shared the two most frequent haplotypes (Nav and Laz), while remote populations, far from the Po River inflow, move towards a mtDNA fixation. 5. The results of this study indicate that distinct populations should be treated as separate entities for management. The key implication of the data is that ad hoc measures for successful programmes of recovery and management strategies for A. italicus conservation, such as the phylogeographic study of haplotype distribution at a local scale and the genetic variability of populations used as stock breeders, should be considered. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Interference with the water-air interface, both direct (by contact with a flat, rigid surface) and indirect (by inducing a meniscus) caused the ciliated protozoa we investigated to actively collect in the water column or on the substrate directly under the area of altered surface tension. A crowding effect is observed in this "rest area" reaching plateau values within one hour after onset of the experiment. The simple experimental procedures described here induced analogous behaviour in both Paramecium caudatum (a swimmer) and Oxytricha bifaria (a crawler). The ciliates seem in this reaction to be seeking a refuge from vibrations transmitted by the free interface. Our discovery is discussed in its implications for the adaptive biology and ecology of these micro-organisms. 相似文献

The microstructure of aptychi (bivalved calcareous coverings on lower jaws) of three genera of Late Cretaceous Ancyloceratina, Baculites, Polyptychoceras and Jeletzkytes is described for the first time on the basis of well-preserved and in situ material from the Western Interior of the USA and Hokkaido, Japan. Optical and scanning electron microscope observations of aptychi on polished median and cross-sections reveal some variation in their relative size, shape and microstructure among the three genera. The aptychus of Baculites is composed of two calcitic layers: one with tilted lamellae and the other one with horizontal lamellae, whereas those of Polyptychoceras and Jeletzkytes consist of a thin layer with horizontal lamellae. Comparison with aptychi (e.g. Laevaptychus) of Jurassic Ammonitina shows that the aptychi of Ancyloceratina differ from those of Jurassic Ammonitina in the smaller number of layers and the absence of a sponge-like structure. We propose for the first time growth models for a sponge-like aptychus of Jurassic Ammonitina and the lamellar aptychus of Cretaceous Ancyloceratina. The remarkable microstructural variation of aptychi observed in Mesozoic Ammonoidea is probably related to the diversity of their modes of feeding and the secondary function of the lower jaws as opercula. 相似文献

Abstract: Radular teeth occur between the jaws in two specimens of the Late Cretaceous scaphitid ammonite Rhaeboceras halli (Meek and Hayden, 1856) from the Western Interior of the United States. The detailed morphology of the teeth has been revealed by propagation phase contrast X‐ray synchrotron microtomography. Each row of the radula of R. halli consists of a total of seven teeth (a central rachidian, two pairs of lateral and one pair of marginal teeth), as in other known ammonoid radulae, although the central tooth could not be confirmed in the specimens examined. The lateral teeth are multicuspid and robust, and the marginal teeth are long (4.6 mm) and slender. In overall morphology, the heterodont and ctenoglossan radula of R. halli is similar that of Jurassic and Cretaceous ammonites with the same aptychus‐type lower jaw, that is, the Aptychophora. This discovery reveals the range of variation in radular morphology, which could be related to ecological or phylogenetic factors. It also invalidates the hypothesis that the hook‐like structures in R. halli previously described are radular elements. 相似文献

The Scops Owl Otus scops is the most endangered and least studied owl in Europe, with widespread declines reported throughout Europe. The species is qualitatively associated with two threats: changes in agricultural practices and predation by Tawny Owls Strix aluco . We investigated these two threats to a population in the Alps, where land abandonment is causing widespread woodland expansion with unknown consequences. Predation risk and environmental indicators of the degree of agricultural change both predicted Scops Owl distribution. Furthermore, agricultural change also affected broader biodiversity, as estimated by the richness and diversity of bird and diurnal butterfly species. This resulted in a strong association between Scops Owl presence and wider biodiversity, which held at different spatial scales and justified a conservation focus on a single, threatened species. The persistence of Scops Owls in the Alps could be promoted through subsidies halting land abandonment and promoting extensive grassland management practices. Such interventions would have the additional advantage of yielding broader biodiversity benefits. 相似文献

In order to investigate the physiological potentialities of behaviorally inert Oxytricha bifaria, cooled from 24 to 9° C according to an already standardized protocol, a warm microgradient was created in the experimental chamber and the behavior of ciliates was analyzed both at the level of the passing warm wave front (dynamic microgradient), and, afterwards, when the thermal gradient stabilized (static microgradient). We monitored the general behavior of the experimental populations by means of (i) their centroid, (ii) the ethograms of single oxytrichas, and (iii) calculating the numerical indices and rates of their creeping tracks. It was found that (a) the population moves towards the heating source, (b) the oxytrichas react immediately to the thermal stimulus, (c) creeping forwards (d) at very high velocity (e) along uninterrupted looping tracks (f) according to precise mechanisms of positive/negative orthokinesis, thus orientating towards the environmental optimum. Moreover, (g) the ciliates accumulate in the warmest area, correcting their creeping by means of many specific behavioral patterns (the Side Stepping Reaction) once the gradient is stabilized. At 9° C, despite their inertness, the ciliates are still able to behave adaptively reacting immediately and orientatedly, once a directional factor (the thermal gradient) arises in an isotropic environment. 相似文献
