Abstract:  The first mygalomorph spiders from the Lower Cretaceous Crato Lagerstätte of Cearà Province, north-east Brazil, are described, from adult males and females, in two new genera and species: Cretadiplura ceara Selden, gen. et sp. nov. and Dinodiplura ambulacra Selden, gen. et sp. nov. They belong to the extant family Dipluridae, hitherto known as fossils only from Tertiary strata; thus this occurrence extends the family record by some 90 myr.  相似文献

The recessus lateralis , a complex structure in the otic region of the skull that is probably associated with detection and analysis of small vibrational pressures and displacements, is widely recognized as a synapomorphy of the Clupeiformes. The Clupeiformes includes the Denticipitoidei, with one living species, Denticeps clupeoides , and the Clupeoidei, with about 360 living species commonly known as herrings and anchovies. Comparisons between details of the recessus lateralis of the Clupeoidei and Denticipitoidei, and the sensory cephalic canals of other teleosts, lead to hypotheses of a series of transformations of the cephalic sensory canals . Treating that complex as a single binary 'presence vs. absence' character as was traditional practice obscures important phylogenetically informative variation. Specific synapomorphies in that system exist for the Clupeiformes and the Clupeoidei. Hypothesized synapomorphies in the recessus lateralis for the Clupeiformes are the presence of a dilated internal temporal sensory canal in the pterotic, a postorbital branch of the supraorbital sensory canal located in a bony groove in the lateral wing of the frontal, and the terminal portions of preopercular and infraorbital sensory canals closely positioned. Hypothesized synapomorphies for the Clupeoidei are the presence of a postorbital branch of the supraorbital sensory canal located deep within the body of the lateral wing of the frontal, with the distal portion of that branch totally internal on the cranium, and the expanded distal portion of the postorbital branch of the supraorbital sensory canal. The homology of the sinus temporalis of Clupeoidei, and of the dermosphenotic of both Denticeps and the Clupeoidei, with those of other teleosts is also considered.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 141 , 257–270.  相似文献

Several hypotheses have been put forward to explain the sinuosity and complexity of suture lines in Ammonoidea. At present, the two principal opponent views maintain either that high complexity was a requisite to reinforce the shell in response to hydrostatic pressure, or that complexity augmented the attachment area for muscles. By using finite element calculations and analytical estimates of simplified ammonoid shell geometries, it is shown that complex suture lines reduced dramatically the strain and the stress in the phragmocone. The calculations lend support to the hypothesis that high sinuosity is an evolutionary response to external pressure. Additionally, it is found that without complex septa, the inward deformation of an ammonoid with thin shell would cause it to shrink in response to pressure and to lose buoyancy by a non-negligible amount.  相似文献

1. Anthropogenic impacts on the biogeochemical cycles of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) affect natural ecosystems worldwide. Modelling is required to predict where and when these key nutrients limit primary production in freshwaters. 2. We reviewed 382 nutrient‐enrichment experiments to examine which factors promote limitation of microphytobenthos biomass by N or P in streams and rivers. Using regression models, we examined whether the response of microphytobenthos biomass to N and P additions could be predicted by the absolute N and P concentrations in the water, the water N:P ratio or a combination of the two. 3. The absolute N concentration in the water was the best predictor of the magnitude of the response of microphytobenthos biomass to N additions. In comparison, the N:P ratio was the best predictor of whether or not N was limiting. However, predictions were uncertain except at extreme N:P ratios <1 : 1 and >100 : 1. 4. The absolute P concentration in the water was the best predictor of the magnitude of the response of microphytobenthos biomass to P additions. Neither the absolute nor the relative N and P concentrations predicted whether or not P was limiting. 5. The absolute and the relative N and P water concentrations contribute significant and complementary insights into the responses of microphytobenthos biomass to nutrient enrichment in running waters. However, ability to predict nutrient limitation from these concentrations is constrained by substantial error in the models. In the future, the prediction ability of models of nutrient limitation might be improved by focussing on regional scales and accounting for additional factors such as light and disturbance.  相似文献

Diurnal changes in percentage loss of hydraulic conductivity (PLC), with recorded values being higher at midday than on the following morning, have been interpreted as evidence for the occurrence of cycles of xylem conduits' embolism and repair. Recent reports have suggested that diurnal PLC changes might arise as a consequence of an experimental artefact, that is, air entry into xylem conduits upon cutting stems, even if under water, while under substantial tension generated by transpiration. Rehydration procedures prior to hydraulic measurements have been recommended to avoid this artefact. In the present study, we show that xylem rehydration prior to hydraulic measurements might favour xylem refilling and embolism repair, thus leading to PLC values erroneously lower than those actually experienced by transpiring plants. When xylem tension relaxation procedures were performed on stems where refilling mechanisms had been previously inhibited by mechanical (girdling) or chemical (orthovanadate) treatment, PLC values measured in stems cut under native tension were the same as those measured after sample rehydration/relaxation. Our data call for renewed attention to the procedures of sample collection in the field and transport to the laboratory, and suggest that girdling might be a recommendable treatment prior to sample collection for PLC measurements.  相似文献

Obligate sedentary endoparasitic nematodes, such as the root‐knot and cyst nematodes, elicit the differentiation of specialized nematode nurse or feeding cells [nematode feeding sites (NFS), giant cells and syncytia, respectively]. During NFS differentiation, marked changes in cell cycle progression occur, partly similar to those induced by some geminiviruses. In this work, we describe the activation of V‐sense promoters from the Maize streak virus (MSV) and Wheat dwarf virus (WDV) in NFS formed by root‐knot and cyst nematodes. Both promoters were transiently active in microinjection experiments. In tobacco and Arabidopsis transgenic lines carrying promoter–β‐glucuronidase fusions, the MSV V‐sense promoter was activated in the vascular tissues of aerial plant parts, primarily leaf and cotyledon phloem tissue and some floral structures. Interestingly, in roots, promoter activation was restricted to syncytia and giant cells tested with four different nematode populations, but undetectable in the rest of the root system. As the activity of the promoter in transgenic rootstocks should be restricted to NFS only, the MSV promoter may have utility in engineering grafted crops for nematode control. Therefore, this study represents a step in the provision of some of the much needed additional data on promoters with restricted activation in NFS useful in biotechnological nematode control strategies.  相似文献

A re-evaluation of Minuartia graminifolia has been undertaken based on comparative morphological studies. M. graminifolia subsp. rosani (an endemic of the south-central Apennines and Sicily) and subsp. hungarica (an endemic of the Banat region of Romania) are accepted infraspecific taxa. M. graminifolia subsp. hungarica is lectotypified. M. graminifolia subsp. clandestina is confirmed for Italy; the taxon is neotypified. The type subspecies is considered an endemic to the east-central Alps. Keys to the species of Minuartia ser. Abstract In this paper we analyzed the emergence phenology of a highly diverse chironomid assemblage to test for association between emergence and some environmental variables and for the presence of synchrony in emergence. We used a time series of 48 weekly samples from a tropical low order forested stream (south‐eastern Brazil) to describe how this assemblage varied in an intra‐annual scale. An eigenvector‐based filtering approach was adapted to create temporal variables that could be used in our multiple regression analyses, trying to overcome the problems of temporal autocorrelation. Emergence of the Chironomidae, two subfamilies, concordant species, and of dominant species was not related to rainfall, temperature, moon phase or photoperiod. Taxonomic composition and species richness did not change across time. The number of emerging individuals of the subfamily Orthocladiinae was significantly related to temperature and to temporal filters. The inclusion of the temporal filters into the analyses almost eliminated autocorrelation in the regression residuals. We detected interspecific synchrony in a group of species, but an absence of trends and periodicity in chironomid emergence, which was not related to environmental variables. This suggests that unknown factors, differing from those known to control emergence in temperate regions, operate in the tropics. The erratic behaviour of the analyzed series raises the question of whether chaotic dynamics may generate this variability.  相似文献
