Incidence of cystic fibrosis in Saguenay-Lac-St.-Jean (Quebec, Canada).

The incidence of cystic fibrosis (CF) in Saguenay-Lac-St.-Jean, a geographically isolated region of Quebec, was estimated to be 1 in 902 during the period 1975-1988. The carrier rate was calculated to be 1 in 15 inhabitants. The high incidence of CF in Saguenay-Lac-St.-Jean is probably the result of a founder effect and genetic drift for one or more mutations. Historical, demographic, and social factors also may have contributed to the high incidence.     

Bristol Industrial Therapy Housing Association: A Contribution to Domestic Resettlement

A housing association for the rehabilitation of adults suffering from psychiatric illness now has six council houses, a former private hotel, and two large houses—providing a total of 100 places. The cost of full board and lodging is about £6·00 a week; the association shows a small profit; and virtually all the residents are in open or sheltered work.     

Changes in serum immunoglobulins in subjects with acute myocardial infarct and essential hypertension

20 (12 men and 8 women) acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients and 17 (14 men and 3 women) patients with arterial hypertension (II degrees stage according to OMS) in comparison to controls age and sex matched, were studied, serum IgA, IgG, IgM were evaluated with radial immunodiffusion and serum IgE with RIA. Ho significant changes ef immunoglobulins were observed between hypertensive patients and controls; whereas a significant increase of IgM, IgG and IgE, with out changes of IgA, were shown in AMI patients. Serum Ig and IgM were significantly augmented in AMI patients in comparison to hypertensive patients.     

Introgressive hybridization of tilapias in Zimbabwe

Three species of tilapia native to Zimbabwe, Oreochromis mossambicus, O. mortimeri and O. macrochir are not naturally sympatric, but because of transplantation they have been brought into sympatry. Allozymes of fish examined from Lakes Kariba, Kyle and Chivero showed evidence of introgressive hybridization. The data showed non-random mating populations in Lakes Kariba and Kyle. All three reservoirs displayed individuals with intermediate principal component scores and hybrid index scores indicating hybridization.
