By the century's end, many tropical seas will reach temperatures exceeding most coral species' thermal tolerance on an annual basis. The persistence of corals in these regions will, therefore, depend on their abilities to tolerate recurrent thermal stress. Although ecologists have long recognized that positive interspecific interactions can ameliorate environmental stress to expand the realized niche of plants and animals, coral bleaching studies have largely overlooked how interactions with community members outside of the coral holobiont shape the bleaching response. Here, we subjected a common coral, Pocillopora grandis, to 10 days of thermal stress in aquaria with and without the damselfish Dascyllus flavicaudus (yellowtail dascyllus), which commonly shelter within these corals, to examine how interactions with damselfish impacted coral thermal tolerance. Corals often benefit from nutrients excreted by animals they interact with and prior to thermal stress, corals grown with damselfish showed improved photophysiology (Fv/Fm) and developed larger endosymbiont populations. When exposed to thermal stress, corals with fish performed as well as control corals maintained at ambient temperatures without fish. In contrast, corals exposed to thermal stress without fish experienced photophysiological impairment, a more than 50% decline in endosymbiont density, and a 36% decrease in tissue protein content. At the end of the experiment, thermal stress caused average calcification rates to decrease by over 80% when damselfish were absent but increase nearly 25% when damselfish were present. Our study indicates that damselfish-derived nutrients can increase coral thermal tolerance and are consistent with the Stress Gradient Hypothesis, which predicts that positive interactions become increasingly important for structuring communities as environmental stress increases. Because warming of just a few degrees can exceed corals' temperature tolerance to trigger bleaching and mortality, positive interactions could play a critical role in maintaining some coral species in warming regions until climate change is aggressively addressed. 相似文献

The rate of cell production in thirty-five cases of carcinoma in Bilharzial bladder was evaluated from the labelling index after in vitro incubation with [3H]TdR. Squamous cell carcinoma was the most frequent histological type in this series and had a median LI of 8.0% which corresponds to a potential doubling time of 5.9 days. In squamous cell tumours the LI increased with the histological grade. Transitional cell tumours had a somewhat greater LI. In all histological types the LI was significantly greater in the deep infiltrating parts of the tumour than in the superficial parts. The discrepancy between the estimated potential doubling time and the growth rate normally attributed to such tumours suggests the existence of an extensive cell loss factor. The aerial parts of Pituranthos tortuosus (Desf.) Benth and Hook (Apiaceae), growing wild in Egypt, yielded 0.8%, 0.6%, and 1.5% (v/w) of essential oil when prepared by hydrodistillation (HD), simultaneous hydrodistillation-solvent (n-pentane) extraction (Lickens-Nickerson, DE), and conventional volatile solvent extraction (preparation of the "absolute", SE), respectively. GC-MS analysis showed that the major components in the HD sample were beta-myrcene (18.81%), sabinene (18.49%), trans-iso-elemicin (12.90%), and terpinen-4-ol (8.09%); those predominent in the DE sample were terpinen-4-ol (29.65%), sabinene (7.38%), gamma-terpinene (7.27%), and beta-myrcene (5.53%); while the prominent ones in the SE sample were terpinen-4-ol (15.40%), dill apiol (7.90%), and allo-ocimene (4E,6Z) (6.00%). The oil prepared in each case was tested for its cytotoxic activity on three human cancer cell lines, i.e., liver cancer cell line (HEPG2), colon cancer cell line (HCT116), and breast cancer cell line (MCF7). The DE sample showed the most potent activity against the three human cancer cell lines (with IC50 values of 1.67, 1.34, and 3.38 microg/ml against the liver, colon, and breast cancer cell lines, respectively). Drought is the major constraint to chickpea productivity worldwide. Utilizing early flowering genotypes and larger seed size have been suggested as strategies for breeding in drought zones. Therefore, this study aimed to identify potential markers linked to days-to-flowering, 100-seed weight, and plant height in a chickpea intraspecific F2:3 population derived from the cross ILC3279 × ICCV2. A closely linked marker (TA117) on linkage group LG3 was identified for the days-to-flowering trait, explaining 33% of the variation. In relation to plant height, a quantitative trait loci (QTL) was located in LG3, close to the Ts5 marker, that explained 29% of phenotypic variation. A QTL for 100-seed weight located in LG4, close to TA176, explained 51% of variation. The identification of a locus linked both to high 100-seed weight and days-to-flowering may account for the correlation observed between these traits in this and other breeding attempts. 相似文献

Exposure to toxic metals and excessive amount of trace elements is a risk factor of cognitive decline. Continuous monitoring of these elements by the use of metabolically inactive tissues such as fingernails may help in taking preventive measures to delay the cognitive decline process. In this study, the cognitive function of 54 elderlies (60–72 years old) from FELDA Sungai Tengi, Selangor, was evaluated using the Malay version of Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). The levels of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) in fingernail were detected using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry. Results showed that (92.6 %) our population was cognitively impaired based on the MoCA with mean score of 18.07?±?5.11. The mean level of elements in fingernails for As, Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb, and Zn were 16.68?±?3.52, 4.26?±?0.91, 4.81?±?1.16, 1.00?±?0.23, 1.83?±?0.47, and 40.86?±?10.81 μg/g, respectively. Significant inverse correlations were observed between MoCA with age (r?=??0.543, p?<?0.01), Cu level (r?=??0.330, p?<?0.05), and Mn level (r?=??0.496, p?<?0.01). MMSE was correlated to age (r?=??0.346, p?<?0.05) only. Morphological traits and three molecular markers techniques: start codon targeted (SCoT), inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) and directly amplified minisatellite DNA (DAMD) markers were compared for fingerprinting of 40 landraces chickpea genotypes collected from different geographical locations of north-west of Iran. Variance analysis of ten measured morphological traits showed significant differences existed between genotypes. Cluster analysis based on morphological traits, divided genotypes in three distinct clusters. Average polymorphism information content (PIC) for ISSR, DAMD and SCoT markers was 0.216, 0.232 and 0.232, respectively, and this revealed that SCoT markers were more informative, followed by ISSRs marker, than other markers for the assessment of diversity amongst genotypes. Cluster analysis for three different molecular types revealed that genotypes taken for the analysis can be divided in three and four distinct clusters. Accessions from same geographical regions mostly showed more genetic similarities than those from origins far isolated apart. These results suggest that efficiency of SCOT, DAMD and ISSR markers was relatively the same in fingerprinting of genotypes but SCOT and DAMD analysis are more effective in fingerprinting of chickpea genotypes. To our knowledge, this is the first detailed report of a comparison of performance among two targeted DNA region molecular markers (SCoT and DAMD) and the ISSR technique on a set of samples of chickpea. A pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the influence of certain oil-seed cakes i.e. fennel, sesame, anise or plant dry seed powder of red pepper as soil amendments in comparison with oxamyl or urea on controlling Meloidogyne incognita infecting eggplant seedlings under greenhouse conditions at 27 ± 5°C. Results indicated that all tested materials significantly improved the growth of eggplant and suppressing the number of galls, females and egg masses of M. incognita as compared to nematode alone. Moreover, anise oil-cake gave the best growth of total plant fresh and dry shoot weights as percentage increase (160.8 and 64%) followed by sesame oil-cake (143.5 and 64%), respectively. However, the highest values of percentage reduction for number of galls (64.2%), females (58.5%) and egg masses (55.7%) on eggplant roots were achieved by sesame-oil-cake application, followed by anise-oil-cake treatment with values of 63.0, 59.6 and 51.1% for the same nematode criteria, respectively. Meanwhile, oxamyl or urea treatment showed remarkable reduction percentages for nematode parameters tested. 相似文献
