This study examined multifiber baroreceptor nerve activity (BNA) as a function of carotid sinus wall distension in 19 rabbits. Analysis estimated mechanical or viscoelastic properties of the sinus wall and their influence on BNA. In six sinuses, properties were altered by treatment with the enzyme protease to remove the endothelium and with nifedipine to passively relax smooth muscle. Properties were estimated from dynamic and steady state wall response to a 45 mm Hg step increase and decrease in intrasinus pressure (ISP) of 20 min. Control wall response had fast and slow (creep) portions with a viscosity increase from 1,370 N(s)/m to 17,864 N(s)/m during step-up in ISP. Wall elasticity averaged 77 N/m; which estimated the relationship of force and change in steady state response. Control BNA response also had fast and slow (resetting) portions. A BNA and wall response relationship (BNA/m) was defined as transduction-gain (T-G) with proportional and dynamic components. In the subgroup, wall creep and baroreceptor resetting were abolished by protease treatment, suggesting an endothelial mediator which influenced sinus smooth muscle. Histology data indicated enzyme damage was limited to tunica intima tissues, and nifedipine did not block Ca2+ channels on neural structures. By comparison of responses before and after treatments the proportional component of T-G was equated to an elastic influence (1/E), with E = 7.5 x 10(-6) m/BNA, while the dynamic component was equated to a viscous influence (1/V), with V = 1.53 x 10(-4) m(s)/BNA. A simple but fundamental relationship for baroreceptor-tissue linkages was estimated by BNA/m = 1/(Vs + E), a first-order transfer function.  相似文献

Summary Previous experiments have shown that during prey-catching behavior (orienting, snapping) in response to a worm-like moving stripe common toads.Bufo bufo (L.) exhibit a contrast-and direction-dependent edge preference. To a black (b) stripe moving against a white (w) background (b/w), they respond (R*) preferably toward the leading (l) rather the trailing (t) edge (R l * > R t * ), thus displaying head preference. If the contrastdirection is reversed (w/b), the stripe's trailing edge is preferred (R l * < R t * ), hence showing tail preference. In the present study, neuronal activities of retinal classes R2 and R3 and tectal classes T5(2) and T7 have been extracellularly recorded in response to leading and trailing edges of a 3 ° × 30 ° stripe simulating a worm and traversing the centers of their excitatory receptive fields (ERF) horizontally at a constant angular velocity in variable movement direction (temporo-nasal or naso-temporal).The behavioral contrast-direction dependent edge preferences are best resembled by the responses (R) of prey-selective class T5(2) neurons (Rl Rt=101 for b/w, 0.31 for w/b) and T7 neurons (RlRt=61 for b/w, 0.41 for w/b); the T7 responses may be dendritic spikes. This property can be traced back to off-responses dominated retinal class R3 neurons (RlRt=61 for b/w, 0.51 for w/b), but not to class R2 (RlRt =1.21 for b/w and 0.91 for w/b). The respective edge preference phenomena are independent of the direction of movement. When stimuli were moved against a stationary black-white structured background, the head preference to the black stripe and the tail preference to the white stripe were maintained in class R3, T5(2), and T7 neurons. If the stripe traversed the ERF together with the structured background in the same direction at the same velocity, the responses of tectal class T5(2) and T7 neurons were strongly inhibited, particularly in the former. Responses of retinal R2 neurons in comparable situations could be reduced by about 50%, while class R3 neurons responded to both the stimulus and the moving background structure. The results support the concept that the prey feature analyzing system in toads applies principles of (i) parallel and (ii) hierarchial information processing. These are (i) divergence of retinal R3 neuronal output contributes to stimulus edge positioning and (in combination with R2 output) area evaluation intectal neurons and to stimulus area evaluation and (in combination with R4 output) sensitivity for moving background structures inpre tectal neurons; (ii) convergence of tectal excitatory and pretectal inhibitory inputs specify the property of prey-selective tectal T5(2) neurons which are known to project to bulbar/spinal motor systems.Abbreviations ERF excitatory receptive field - IRF inhibitory receptive field - N nasal - T temporal - R w response to a worm-like stripe moving in the direction of its longer axis - R A response to an antiworm-like stripe whose longer axis is oriented perpendicular to the direction of movement - R l response to the leading edge of a worm-like moving stripe - R t response to the trailing edge of a worm-like moving stripe - b/w black stimulus against a white background - w/b white stimulus against a black background - sm structured moving background - ss structured stationary background - u minimal structure width of a structured background consisting of rectangular black and white patches in random distribution - HRP horseradish peroxidase  相似文献

Organismic diversity, as well as distributional and ecological patterns, can be fully understood in an evolutionary framework only. Reliable phylogenetic trees are required to ‘read history’, but are not yet available for most marine invertebrate groups. Molecular systematics offers an enormous potential, but still fails for ‘all‐species approaches’ on groups with species that are rare or occur in remote areas only, simply because there is no easily collectable material available for sequence analyses. Exploring morphologically aberrant corambid nudibranch gastropods as a case study, we assess whether or not morphology‐based phylogenetic analyses can fill this gap and produce a tree that allows a detailed view on evolutionary history. Morphology‐based parsimony analysis of corambids and potential relatives resulted in a well‐resolved and remarkably robust topology. As an offshoot of kelp‐associated onchidoridid ancestors, and obviously driven by the heterochronic shortening of life cycles and morphological juvenilization in an ephemeral habitat, the ancestor of corambids originated in cool northern Pacific coastal waters. A basal clade (the genus Loy) diverged there, adapting to live on soft bottoms under successive reversals of paedomorphic traits. The more speciose Corambe lineage radiated preying upon short‐lived encrusting bryozoa in a high‐energy kelp environment. Selection favoured transformation of the mantle into a cuticle‐covered shield, and successive paedomorphic translocations of dorid anal gills to the protected ventral side of the body, where compensatory, multiple gills evolved. Corambe species probably first colonized tropical American seas, and then radiated in worldwide temperate waters: this is explained by the excellent long‐distance dispersal abilities afforded by rafting on kelp, with the subsequent divergence of colonizers in allopatry. The competitive coexistence of Corambe pacifica MacFarland & O'Donoghue, 1929 and Corambe steinbergae (Lance, 1962) off California is the result of independent colonization events. The closing of the Isthmus of Panama separated the latter species from a flock that have radiated within warm Atlantic waters since then. Our case study shows that morphological structures, if investigated in depth, bear the potential for an efficient phylogenetic analysis of groups that are still elusive to molecular analyses. Tracing character evolution and integrating a wide range of geographic, biological, and ecological background information allowed us to reconstruct an evolutionary scenario for corambids that is detailed and plausible, and can be tested by future molecular approaches. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 163 , 585–604.  相似文献

Vowel identification in noise using consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) logatomes was used to investigate a possible interplay of speech information from different frequency regions. It was hypothesized that the periodicity conveyed by the temporal envelope of a high frequency stimulus can enhance the use of the information carried by auditory channels in the low-frequency region that share the same periodicity. It was further hypothesized that this acts as a strobe-like mechanism and would increase the signal-to-noise ratio for the voiced parts of the CVCs. In a first experiment, different high-frequency cues were provided to test this hypothesis, whereas a second experiment examined more closely the role of amplitude modulations and intact phase information within the high-frequency region (4–8 kHz). CVCs were either natural or vocoded speech (both limited to a low-pass cutoff-frequency of 2.5 kHz) and were presented in stationary 3-kHz low-pass filtered masking noise. The experimental results did not support the hypothesized use of periodicity information for aiding low-frequency perception.  相似文献

Oestradiol application during embryonic development reverses the sex of male embryos and results in normal female differentiation in reptiles lacking heteromorphic sex chromosomes, but fails to do so in birds and mammals with heteromorphic sex chromosomes. It is not clear whether the evolution of heteromorphic sex chromosomes in amniotes is accompanied by insensitivity to oestradiol, or if the association between oestradiol insensitivity and heteromorphic sex chromosomes can be attributable to phylogenetic constraints in these taxa. Turtles provide an ideal system to examine the potential relationship between oestradiol insensitivity and sex chromosome heteromorphy, since there are species with heteromorphic sex chromosomes that are closely related to species lacking heteromorphic sex chromosomes. We investigated this relationship by examining the long-term effects of oestradiol-17beta application on sex determination in Staurotypus triporcatus and Staurotypus salvinii, two turtle species with male heterogamety. After raising the turtles in the lab for 3 years, we found follicular and Müllerian duct morphology in oestradiol-treated turtles that was identical to that of untreated females. The lasting sex reversal suggests that the evolutionary transition between systems lacking heteromorphic sex chromosomes and those with heteromorphic sex chromosomes is not constrained by a fundamental mechanistic difference.  相似文献

Endothelial cells (EC) are covered with cell-borne proteoglycans and glycoproteins. Blood plasma proteins (e.g., albumin) adsorb to this glycocalyx forming a complex endothelial surface layer (ESL). We determined the molecular mobility of albumin by electron spin resonance (ESR) in the presence and absence of ECs to analyze interactions with the ESL. Albumin was spin labeled with 5- or 12-4,4-dimethyloxazolidine-N-oxyl (DOXYL)-stearic acid yielding information on the mobility of the molecular surface (5-DOXYL) or the entire protein (12-DOXYL). EC cultures grown on glass coverslips were immersed in labeled albumin and placed in the temperature-regulated cavity of an ESR spectrometer. Alternatively, ECs were labeled and then exposed to native albumin. At 37 degrees C, rotational correlation times determined by modified saturation transfer ESR (ST-ESR) were 26 and 48 ns for 5-DOXYL- and 12-DOXYL-labeled albumin, respectively. Presence of ECs increased rotational correlation time values for 5-DOXYL-stearic acid to 37 ns but not for 12-DOXYL-stearic acid. Albumin was able to completely take up the label from labeled EC within 2 min. The present study shows that modified ST-ESR can be used to determine the mobility of biological macromolecules interacting with cellular surfaces. Reduction in albumin surface mobility in the presence of EC at unchanged mobility of protein proper and fast removal of labeled fatty acids from EC membranes indicate rapid transient interactions between albumin surface and ESL but no rigid incorporation of albumin into a macromolecular network that would interfere with its transport function for poorly water-soluble substances.  相似文献
