The ultrastructural morphology of the thoracic duct and cisterna chyli of the dog was examined using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Examination of the cisterna chyli, reservoir of the lymphatic system, featured a number of afferent lymphatics draining into the cisterna: valves were however absent. The luminal surface of the endothelial lining of both the thoracic duct and cisterna demonstrated ovoid endothelial nuclei with numerous cellular ridges. Considerable variation existed in the number of smooth muscle cells lining the duct and cisterna in the contracted and distended state. Organelles and inclusions characteristic of endothelium and smooth muscle were identified. Reflux of lymph into the thoracic duct was prevented by a mono- and bicuspid valve situated at the lymphaticovenous junction. 相似文献

Abundance of Barents Sea capelin larvae (6–25 mm) is estimated every summer using samples from a Gulf III sampler. It has been suggested that a MIK net would be more efficient in sampling larvae exceeding 18–20 mm in length. On this basis the length distributions of larval capelin captured by Gulf III, MIK, and MOCNESS in six consecutive hauls were compared. The catches taken by Gulf III and MIK nets had similar length distributions whereas the MOCNESS captured smaller larvae than the other samplers. There would thus be no gain in replacing the Gulf III with the MIK for estimating abundance of larval capelin smaller than 25 mm. 相似文献

The relative yield of S-phase cells when making cell suspensions from lymph nodes was determined by two different methods: by estimating the proportions of S-phase cells in sections and smears from lymph nodes undergoing a local graft-versus-host reaction, and by measuring the [3H]thymidine activity relative to DNA content in intact tissue and cell suspensions from normal lymph nodes. Both methods showed a large selective loss of S-phase cells in the process of making cell suspensions. The cell types preparing for division in the GVH nodes were then determined by light microscopic autoradiography combined with electron microscopy of neighboring ultrathin sections. A modified method of sample displacement chromatography (SDC) was used to purify active salmon thrombin on a heparin-coupled matrix to near homogeneity in milligram amounts from 117 ml plasma. This was achieved by combining a low-pressure multi-column affinity chromatography system with non-homogenous sample application in the order of increasing affinity to Heparin Sepharose. The results suggest that this modified method could be useful in protein purification. Some characteristics of salmon thrombin are presented. 相似文献

Upon viral infection, the major defense mounted by the host immune system is activation of the interferon (IFN)-mediated antiviral pathway, which is mediated by IFN regulatory factors (IRFs). In order to complete their life cycle, viruses must modulate host IFN-mediated immune responses. Despite its association with significant human health problems, activities of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a human tumor-inducing herpesvirus, to evade host IFN-mediated innate immunity have not been well characterized. To search for EBV genes that block IFN signal transduction, we carried out a screening of EBV open reading frames for their abilities to block IFN-α/β-mediated luciferase expression upon Sendai virus infection. This screening demonstrates that EBV LF2 tegument protein specifically interacts with the central inhibitory association domain of IRF7, and this interaction leads to inhibition of the dimerization of IRF7, which suppresses IFN-α production and IFN-mediated immunity. This demonstrates a novel immune evasion mechanism of EBV LF2 in blocking cellular IRF7-mediated innate immunity. 相似文献

Coexistence of ecotypes, genetically divergent population units, is a widespread phenomenon, potentially affecting ecosystem functioning and local food web stability. In coastal Skagerrak, Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) occur as two such coexisting ecotypes. We applied a combination of acoustic telemetry, genotyping, and stable isotope analysis to 72 individuals to investigate movement ecology and food niche of putative local “Fjord” and putative oceanic “North Sea” ecotypes—thus named based on previous molecular studies. Genotyping and individual origin assignment suggested 41 individuals were Fjord and 31 were North Sea ecotypes. Both ecotypes were found throughout the fjord. Seven percent of Fjord ecotype individuals left the study system during the study while 42% of North Sea individuals left, potentially homing to natal spawning grounds. Home range sizes were similar for the two ecotypes but highly variable among individuals. Fjord ecotype cod had significantly higher δ13C and δ15N stable isotope values than North Sea ecotype cod, suggesting they exploited different food niches. The results suggest coexisting ecotypes may possess innate differences in feeding and movement ecologies and may thus fill different functional roles in marine ecosystems. This highlights the importance of conserving interconnected populations to ensure stable ecosystem functioning and food web structures. 相似文献

The putative effects of a tryptic bovine alphaS1-casein hydrolysate on stress-induced sleep disorders were investigated and their possible link with typical blood stress parameters such as plasma corticosterone concentrations and glycaemia was assessed. Rats were subjected to chronic stress in the form of environmental disturbances, while receiving an oral administration of the alphaS1-casein hydrolysate (CH). Chronic stress significantly reduced sleep duration in control rats during the first 2 days of the stress period, but stress-induced sleep disturbance was prevented in CH-treated rats. Indeed, CH administration allowed the maintenance of slow wave sleep (SWS) duration and even a slight increase in paradoxical sleep (PS) duration in treated rats. Results on plasma corticosterone concentrations and on glycemia values were inconclusive with respect to the implication of the HPA axis in this study. However, the protective effect of the alphaS1-casein hydrolysate on sleep during exposure to our chronic mild stress conditions may be mediated by modulation of the central adrenergic response. 相似文献
