In Patagonian rocky salt marshes, the presence of the austral cordgrass Spartina densiflora provide habitat for diverse faunal assemblages. Two different mechanisms may influence the distribution and abundance patterns of these associated organisms: those generated by the biological properties of cordgrasses and those caused or mediated by the physical structure supplied by the plants. The aims of this study were: (1) to determine the effect of cordgrasses on macroinvertebrate assemblages dominating a rocky marsh and (2) to determine how much of this effect is caused by the physical structure supply by the plants. In order to achieve these objectives, we conducted two field manipulative experiments. In the first one, we manipulated the presence of defaunated transplants of cordgrass, and in the second one, we did the same with plastic cordgrass mimics simulating the architecture of Spartina densiflora. In both experiments, sessile and mobile assemblages were separately examined to evaluate whether they respond in the same way or not. Abundance and richness of mobile and sessile organisms were higher in transplant and mimic cordgrass plots compared to the controls, indicating that the presence of cordgrasses, either transplanted or artificial, has a positive effect on sessile and mobile assemblages. Furthermore, we found that the composition of mobile and sessile macroinvertebrates assemblages did not differ between transplants and mimics. Therefore, the physical structure of cordgrass was found to be the major factor influencing macroinvertebrates assemblages in the studied Patagonia rocky salt marshes. Within the period of 1 year, mobile and sessile fauna colonized several times more abundantly transplant and artificial cordgrass than the control unvegetated plots, highlighting the key role of cordgrasses in optimizing the colonization rate of macroinvertebrate communities in this rocky bottom environment. Since Spartina densiflora is invading different regions worldwide, our study may help to predict its potential effect on the invaded communities.  相似文献

In this work, we evaluate the effect of the introduced reef-building polychaete Ficopomatus enigmaticus on the benthic community and on sediment characteristics of a southwestern Atlantic coastal lagoon. When reefs were experimentally added, density of the native crab Cyrtograpsus angulatus dramatically increased in a short time period. After reefs and crabs were experimentally transplanted as a unit, they decreased the density of the free-living soft-bottom polychaetes Heteromastus similis and Laeonereis acuta. Exclusion/inclusion caging experiments showed that Cyrtograpsus negatively affect the density of soft-bottom polychaetes (H. similis, L. acuta, Nephtys fluviatilis) and ostracodes. Our results showed that this effect is much higher in areas populated by reefs because of the increased density of crabs that find shelter under the reefs. Thus, reefs have a cascading effect on the native benthic community within the areas colonized by them. Analysis of crab stomach contents indicated that crabs feed on a wide variety of prey, including infaunal organisms, small gastropods and also algae. When reefs and crabs were experimentally added, the amount of bivalve shells on superficial sediments increased. Our results suggest that this bivalve shell accumulation and sediment composition are due to the reworking activity of Cyrtograpsus in the sediment where they dig burrows. The invasive habits of Ficopomatus may be favoring crabs to have a major effect on the integrity of the native community in the lagoon. Ficopomatus should be considered a bioengineer organism by creating and regulating refuge for other species, altering the interactions between preexistent species and also by changing the physical factors of the invaded environment.  相似文献

Communities of the rocky mid-intertidal zone of the South-western Atlantic are uniform in appearance, dominated by dense monocultures of small-size mussels (Brachidontes rodriguezii and Perumytilus purpuratus). To explain this, two hypotheses have been advanced in the literature: environmental harshness due to high potential evaporation and historical contingency after the Last Glacial Maximum. In this study of Uruguayan and Argentine shores, we address the implications and predictions of these two hypotheses from a biogeographic perspective by studying the regional distribution and composition of mid-intertidal mussels. We conducted an extensive latitudinal sampling survey (21 locations, 34–54°S), along with a compilation of available information on mussel bed composition and mussel predators present along the coastline. Then we constructed latitudinal profiles of ecologically significant environmental variables with specific emphasis on potential evaporation, a proxy for desiccation stress. The results show that mussel beds are composed of two species of small mussels, which coexist over a biogeographic transition zone (40–42°S) related to sea surface water temperature. The distribution of mussels along the coastline studied is not consistent with the environmental harshness hypothesis. In addition, in the Central Patagonian zone (44–50°S), two invertebrate predators also inhabit the intertidal rocky shores. However, these localities showed higher environmental harshness (potential evaporation rate) than non-Patagonian localities. We suggest that further attention should be given to historical contingency in order to advance towards a hypothesis consistent with current knowledge on the post-glacial biogeographic history of the South-western Atlantic.  相似文献

Background

In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, nutrient limitation stimulates diploid cells to undergo DNA replication and meiosis, followed by the formation of four haploid spores. Septins are a family of proteins that assemble a ring structure at the mother-daughter neck during vegetative growth, where they control cytokinesis. In sporulating cells, the septin ring disassembles and septins relocalize to the prospore membrane.  相似文献

Abstract

cis-3-Aminomethylcyclopentylmethanol (4), prepared from norbornene (5) in four steps and 51 % overall yield, was used as a precursor in the synthesis of carbocylic nucleosides 13–18 containing guanine and 8-azaguanine bases. None of these compounds had appreciable activity against fourteen viruses in the concentration range tested. Compounds 13 and 16 showed cytotoxicity to all or part of the cell lines used.  相似文献
