Uteroferrin: A protein in search of a function

Uteroferrin, a purple-colored, iron-containing acid phosphatase, with many of the properties of a lysosomal hydrolase, transports iron from the mother to the conceptus in pregnant pigs. Uteroferrin, however, is but one member of what may be a broad class of iron-containing phosphatases with unusual spectral properties which result from a novel type of di-iron active site. The biological function of uteroferrin is unknown. We argue here that the in vivo function of uteroferrin, despite its undoubted ability to act as a potent acid phosphatase, is that of a transplacental iron transporter.     

Terpenoid and morphological variability of Pinus quadrifolia and the natural hybridization with Pinus monophylla in the San Jacinto Mountains in California

Monoterpenoids from wood of Pinus quadrifolia and Pinus monophylla from south of the San Jacinto Mountains in southern California were analysed by gas-liquid chromatography (GLC). The number of needles per fascicle, the number of resin canals, and the number of abaxial and adaxial stomatal rows in the needles were determined. Percentages of mycrene, α-pinene, and to a minor extent of camphene, β-pinene, limonene, and β-phellandrene, the above mentioned morphological characteristics and previously obtained data were all used for identification and characterisation of species intermediacy in the San Jacinto area. It was concluded that many P. quadrifolia trees in the mixed Buck Ridge stand and some trees in two pure stands of the same area were hybrids and that sympatric and to a lesser extent allopatric introgression of P. monophylla into P. quadrifolia takes place in the San Jacinto region. Introgression of P. quadrifolia into P. monophylla could not be demonstrated.     

New labdane resin acids from Pinus elliottii

Slash pine needles and cortex oleoresin have been found to contain a new major diterpene constituent, imbricataloic acid. The closely related imbricatoloic acid, previously reported only in Araucaria imbricata, was found to be present in small amounts in slash pine needle extract. Spectral data are given for an unidentified diterpene alcohol isolated from the cortex oleoresin.     

Studies on ulcerative dermal necrosis of salmonids

Fourteen fresh run salmon Satmo salar L. with early extant lesions of ulcerative dermal necrosis (UDN) were kept in separate tanks and treated with zinc free malachite green. Ten of the fish were held at 10° C and 4 at 2° C. The treatment precluded infection with Saprolegnia fungus and allowed natural resolution of the lesions. There was a marked difference in rate of healing between warm and cold water conditions.
Histological examination of healing lesions at different stages showed that there was a primary invasion of cuboidal epithelium over the collagen scar followed by a phase of disorganized proliferation which eventually organized itself into normal epithelium. Melanocytes were very obvious in the dermis of healing lesions.     

Epilogue — Demography and anthropology

As a conclusion, this paper reviews briefly the content of the volume. The wealth of demographic data has not been adequately exploited in anthropology; this is why this publication is valuable in showing attempts to apply demographic data in a variety of anthropological problems. This symposium has explored many interesting points which we recall here. Yet it has also opened up a whole range of further questions on the material presented as well as in this broad field. Several directions of research could be developed, for instance, testing among human populations, over long periods, the ecological thoughts of ecosystems evolving as a cascade of instabilities, rather than a succession of equilibrium states. Let us also recall the pervasive nature of demographic facts in topics such as the energy cycle or the genetic structure and evolution of human populations.     

Separating the climatic signal from tree-ring width and maximum latewood density records

We propose a technique for separating the climatic signal which is contained in two tree-ring parameters widely used in dendroclimatology. The method is based on the removal of the relationship between tree-ring width (TRW) and maximum latewood density (MXD) observed for narrow tree rings from high latitudes. The new technique is tested on data from three larch stands located along the northern timberline in Eurasia. Correlations were calculated between the temperatures of pentads (five consecutive days), TRW chronologies and MXD chronologies calculated according to the standard and proposed methods. The analysis confirms the great importance of summer temperature for tree radial growth and tree-ring formation. TRW is positively correlated with the temperature of four to eight pentads (depending on the region) at the beginning of the growth season, but MXD as obtained by the standard technique is correlated with temperature over a much longer period. For maximum density series from which the relationship between MXD and TRW has been removed (MXD′), there is a clear correlation with temperatures in the second part of the growing season. These results are consistent with the known dynamics of tree-ring growth in high latitudes and mechanisms of tree-ring formation.     

500-MHz 1H NMR studies of ragweed allergen Ra5

The solution conformation of short ragweed allergen Ra5, a protein of 45 amino acid residues cross-linked with four disulfide bridges, has been investigated by 1H NMR spectroscopy at 500 MHz. The aromatic region, which contains resonances from three tyrosines and two tryptophans, has been partially assigned. Two tyrosines titrate with a pK of 10.2; a third tyrosine is buried under the tryptophan resonances, and its pK could not be determined. The two tryptophans reside in different microenvironments; the resonances of one are very similar to those found in random coil structures while the other has dramatically shifted peaks. Nuclear Overhauser effect (NOE) difference spectroscopy is used to define two distinct spin-diffusion systems for the aromatic residues and to further identify several methyl-containing amino acids involved in these systems. Assignments in the methyl region are based on selective decoupling, chemical shifts, NOE difference spectra, and 2-D J-resolved and 2-D J-correlated spectroscopy (COSY) methodology. A unique ring-current-shifted methyl doublet in the Ra5 spectrum titrates into the bulk methyl region with a pK of 10.2. Examination of the COSY map suggests that this resonance belongs to either leucine-1 or isoleucine-38. Chemical removal of the N-terminal leucine did not affect the ring-current-shifted methyl. Therefore, this unique resonance has been assigned to the methyl of isoleucine-38.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)     

HYLAS: program for generating H curves (abstract three-dimensional representations of long DNA sequences)

The computer program HYLAS generates from a standard DNA lettersequence a three-dimensional space curve (H curve) which embodiesthe entire information content of the original nucleotide sequence.The program can display H curves either as two-dimensional (frontand side view) projections or as stereo-pair images. The curvescan be marked at specific nucleotide locations, annotated, rotatedfor observation from any viewing angle, and manipulated forconvenient side-by-side comparisons. Unlike the cumbersome lettersequences, H curves can be drastically condensed in size withoutlosing their ability to reflect the global nucleotide-distributionpattern of the entire DNA sequence. Often, biologically importantloci can be visually identified on the H curves. HYLAS is writtenin FORTRAN with separate mainframe (IBM- VM/CMS) and microcomputer(MS-DOS) versions.
