Background

Non-adherence to antipsychotic medication has a negative impact on the course of illness resulting in increased risk of relapse, rehospitalization and suicide, and increased costs to healthcare systems. The objective of this study was to investigate factors associated with medication adherence among patients with schizophrenia at Ayder Referral Hospital and Mekelle Hospital in Mekelle, Tigray region, Northern Ethiopia.

Methods

The study was a cross-sectional survey in which sociodemographic characteristics, drug attitudes, insight and side effects were measured and explored in terms of their relationship with medication adherence. A structured questionnaire as a data collection tool was used. Data were analyzed with the help of SPSS Version 20.0.

Results

A total of 393 patients participated, 26.5% were non-adherent to their antipsychotic medication. The factors significantly associated with better adherence were positive treatment attitudes (AOR = 1.40, 95% CI: 1.26, 1.55), fewer side effects (AOR = 0.97, 95% CI: 0.94, 0.99), awareness of illness (AOR = 1.44, 95% CI: 1.12, 1.85) and the ability to relabel symptoms (AOR = 1.57, 95% CI: 1.19, 2.07). However, khat chewers (AOR = 0.24, 95% CI: 0.09, 0.68), being illiterate (AOR = 0.13, 95% CI: 0.03, 0.47) and older age group (AOR = 0.03, 95% CI: 0.01, 0.16) were associated with less medication adherence.

Conclusions

A high prevalence of medication non-adherence was found among patients with schizophrenia. Intervention strategies focused on educating the patients to better understand the illness, medications and their potential side effects might be useful in improving adherence to antipsychotic medication treatment.  相似文献

Morin is a fluorochrome which forms a fluorescent complex with aluminium (Al) and is thus used to localize Al in plant tissues. However, reports about the cellular distribution of Al-apoplastic versus symplastic-based on morin staining are often conflicting. The objective of this work was to investigate whether Al localization with morin staining can show the proper cellular distribution of Al. Fresh root cross-sections were made from root apices of maize (cv. Lixis) treated with 25 muM Al for 6 h and stained with morin. Fluorescence microscopic investigation showed Al-morin fluorescence in the cytosol, but not in the cell wall. This is in contrast to the growing evidence which shows that Al mainly accumulates in the cell wall, especially bound to the pectin matrix. Therefore, in vitro analyses were carried out to study whether morin can form a fluorescent complex with Al, which is bound to pectin, cell wall, and other Al-binding ligands such as phosphate, galacturonate, DNA, and ATP. Compared with the control treatment without Al-binding ligands, fluorescence intensity was reduced by about 10-fold in the presence of pectin and isolated cell walls, but fairly unaffected in the presence of phosphate and galacturonate. Al associated with DNA and ATP also formed a fluorescent complex with morin. This implies that, although Al is mainly accumulated in the cell wall, it cannot be detected with morin as it is tightly bound to cell-wall pectin. Thus, morin staining should not be used to study the distribution of Al between cell compartments.  相似文献

The rhizotoxicity of aluminium at low-pH with Al(3+) and at high pH with Al(OH)-(4) as the main Al species was studied. Aluminium reduced root growth to similar levels at pH 8.0 and pH 4.3, although the mononuclear Al concentration at pH 8.0 was three times lower than at pH 4.3. Al contents of root apices were much higher at pH 8 than at pH 4.3. Callose was induced only marginally at pH 8 and the formation was confined to the epidermis, whereas it proceeded through the cortex with time at pH 4.3. Well-documented genotypical differences in callose formation and Al accumulation could not be found at pH 8. The largest fraction of the root-tip Al was recovered in the cell-wall fraction independent of the solution pH. A sequential extraction of isolated cell walls suggests that most of the cell-wall Al was precipitated Al(OH)(3) at pH 8.0. This can be explained by a drastic pH reduction in the root apoplastic sap to 6.2, whereas at bulk solution pH 4.3 it rose to 5.6. Al precipitation was also confirmed by the microscopic localization of Al. At pH 8, Al could mostly be found in the epidermis, but in the apoplast of the outer cortex at pH 4.3. It is proposed here that at pH 4.3, Al(3+) inhibits root growth through binding to sensitive binding sites in the apoplast of the epidermis and the outer cortex. At pH 8, Al(OH)(3) precipitation in the epidermis causes a mechanical barrier thus impairing the root-growth control of the epidermis.  相似文献

Repellents used to reduce by-kill of birds during pest control must not compromise acceptance by target species. Two repellents combined, anthraquinone (AQ; 0.4 g kg?1) and d-pulegone (DP; 1.0) did not reduce the palatability of blue-coloured carrot baits to laboratory rats (Rattus norvegicus); nor did DP (2.0). Green-coloured carrot baits coated with AQ, DP or AQ + DP were taken from bait stations by wild possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) and rats. Toxic (1080) bait coated with AQ (0.4) and peanut oil (0.1) had reduced palatability but was accepted by laboratory rats. However, laboratory rats did not consume enough baits coated with AQ and bacon, peanut butter, cinnamon or DP to be killed. Anthraquinone (0.4 or 0.8) plus cinnamon and DP (0.5) did not affect palatability or lethality to captive ship rats (R. rattus) or possums. Anthraquinone and DP as surface coatings on baits are therefore acceptable to possums and possibly rats, at concentrations that deter some bird species.  相似文献

The major rivers of the South African ‘Lowveld’ (low-latitude savanna) suffer numerous impacts from upstream economic activities. Whereas monitoring these rivers is required to detect biodiversity losses, record pollution events and devise mitigation strategies, current monitoring programmes are inadequate. In 2009, the South African Earth Observation Network initiated an intensive long-term research programme on the Lowveld reaches of the Olifants River. Physico-chemical parameters, aquatic macroinvertebrates and fish abundances were recorded at four Lowveld sites in the Olifants River. We review six years of this programme. The results suggest deterioration in the ecological condition of the Olifants River with no discernible improvement through protected areas. Trends could not be detected. The parameters measured, sampling methods and/or sampling frequency might be responsible for the limited trends observed, or alternatively the results simply reflect stable conditions despite on-going pollution. Real time monitoring and an expansion in the parameters monitored would add value to the monitoring programme.  相似文献
