The time of detection of recessive visible genes with non-random mating.

Expressions for the probability and average time of detection of a recessive visible gene in populations where there is partial selfing or partial full-sib mating are presented. A small increase in the proportion of inbred matings greatly reduces the average time until detection and increases the proportion detected. Unless the proportion of inbred matings or the population size is very small, the time and proportion detected are approximately independent of the population size.     

Injection tube differentiation in gun cells of a haptoglossa species which infects nematodes

The gun cells which develop from germinating cysts in Haptoglossa produce a specialized infection apparatus, the injection tube. Upon eversion this tube fires a missile-like projectile which penetrates the host cuticle and then forms an infective sporidium within the body cavity of the nematode host. The temporal assembly of this complex cell organelle has been determined by serial-section reconstructions of maturing gun cells in a previously undescribed Haptoglossa species. The differentiation of the partially walled inverted injection tube is an unusual example of internal tube growth, in which membrane and wall assembly are temporally separated. There is no evidence that the shape of this inverted tube, which coils around the nucleus until it doubles back on itself, is dictated by the disposition of cytoplasmic microtubules. However, actin-like material was associated with the delimiting membrane of the differentiating tube, particularly in the regions of extension. From these studies it seems likely that the "head and buttress" structures previously depicted as the barbed tip of the "harpoon-like" penetration missile are part of a separate, structurally complex system which we suggest locks the "missile" into position in the invaginated injection tube. From this detailed account of cell architecture, models for the likely mechanism of infection cell firing are discussed, and unresolved questions relating to the cell biology and biochemistry of these complex organelles are highlighted. Scottish-breeding Greenshanks Tringa nebularia do not migrate far

ABSTRACT

Capsule: Scottish-breeding Greenshanks Tringa nebularia migrate largely to Ireland.

Aims: To describe the migration timings and determine the non-breeding areas (staging and wintering areas) of Scottish-breeding Greenshanks.

Methods: Breeding adult Greenshanks were marked with geolocators and/or unique permutations of colour-rings in Sutherland, northern Scotland. Sightings of the colour-ringed birds and data from geolocators on recaptured birds provided information on the migrations and locations of the non-breeding areas.

Results: Scottish-breeding Greenshanks spent the winter mainly in Ireland, with the range also including Wales, southern England and western France. Departure from the breeding grounds, as determined by the geolocators, took place in June and July; the median date for the last day in the breeding area was 16 July. Arrival on the breeding grounds took place in March and April; the median date for the first day back in the breeding area was 7 April. Some birds fed at an estuary close to their territories prior to breeding. There was fidelity to wintering areas, both within and between years. Short-term staging took place during both the southward and northward migrations for some birds, and one bird used the same staging area in different autumns. Members of one pair had separate wintering areas.

Conclusions: Scottish-breeding Greenshanks have a short migration, largely to the coasts of Ireland. The migrations involved short-term staging for some birds.     

An alternative approach to the management dilemma of the mildly dyskaryotic smear based on audit of outcome

We describe a study which takes an alternative approach to the management dilemma of the mildly dyskaryotic cervical smear. Two hundred and fifty women with a smear showing mild dyskaryosis were studied by auditing the clinical outcome as well as the cost. The cost of providing the colposcopy services during the index year was approximately pounds sterling 70000 for an average size district general Hospital. The proportion of women managed by the current guidelines and avoiding colposcopy after a first mildly dyskaryotic smear was only 30%. The majority of patients will eventually have colposcopy despite a policy of cytological surveillance. The alternative approach, to offer colposcopy immediately after the first mildly dyskaryotic smear, would result in a small increase in cost for our unit, equivalent to one extra colposcopy patient per week.
