A model is studied that regulates follicle development through hormonal feedback. The model takes the form of a many body problem where each body (follicle) is assumed to inherit the same maturation function and interact through a common summed variable (estradiol). Numerical solutions are obtained to a system of ordinary differential equations in which the number of equations changes in time as new follicles randomly enter into the interacting population from a dormant immature pool. Spontaneous cycles of follicle development emerge in which the number of follicles that reach full maturity is well controlled and insensitive to the rate of activation. The system of N interacting follicles is transformed to a gradient system on the unit sphere. Its stability properties are analyzed and compared with numerical and experimental results. Features of both spontaneous and induced ovulators are simulated. For certain parameter values solutions are obtained that correspond to known pathology. The model also suggests that the large number of follicles that are activated but atrophy before reaching full maturity help to regulate the cycle.  相似文献

Functional RNAs can fold into intricate structures using a number of different secondary and tertiary structural motifs. Many factors contribute to the overall free energy of the target fold. This study aims at quantifying the entropic costs coming from the loss of conformational freedom when the sugar-phosphate backbone is subjected to constraints imposed by secondary and tertiary contacts. Motivated by insights from topology theory, we design a diagrammatic scheme to represent different types of RNA structures so that constraints associated with a folded structure may be segregated into mutually independent subsets, enabling the total conformational entropy loss to be easily calculated as a sum of independent terms. We used high-throughput Monte Carlo simulations to simulate large ensembles of single-stranded RNA sequences in solution to validate the assumptions behind our diagrammatic scheme, examining the entropic costs for hairpin initiation and formation of many multiway junctions. Our diagrammatic scheme aids in the factorization of secondary/tertiary constraints into distinct topological classes and facilitates the discovery of interrelationships among multiple constraints on RNA folds. This perspective, which to our knowledge is novel, leads to useful insights into the inner workings of some functional RNA sequences, demonstrating how they might operate by transforming their structures among different topological classes.  相似文献

Lead halide perovskite solar cells now show excellent efficiencies and encouraging levels of stability. Further improvements in performance require better control of the trap states which are considered to be associated with vacancies and defects at crystallite surfaces. Herein, a reflection on the ways in which these traps can be mitigated is presented by improving the quality of the perovskite layer and interfaces in fully assembled device configurations. In this review, the most recent design strategies reported in the literature, which have been explored to tune grain orientation, to passivate defects, and to improve charge‐carrier lifetimes, are presented. Specifically, the advances made with single‐cation, mixed‐cation and/or mixed‐halide, and 3D/2D bilayer‐based light absorbers are discussed. The interfacial, compositional, and band alignment engineering along with their consequent effects on the open‐circuit voltage, power conversion efficiency, and stability are a particular focus.  相似文献

Background  

Data integration is an escalating problem in bioinformatics. We have developed a web tool and warehousing system, Booly, that features a simple yet flexible data model coupled with the ability to perform powerful comparative analysis, including the use of Boolean logic to merge datasets together, and an integrated aliasing system to decipher differing names of the same gene or protein. Furthermore, Booly features a collaborative sharing system and a public repository so that users can retrieve new datasets while contributors can easily disseminate new content.  相似文献
