The adaptation capacity of olive trees to different environments is well recognized. However, the presence of microorganisms in the soil is also a key factor in the response of these trees to drought. The objective of the present study was to elucidate the effects of different arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi coming from diverse soils on olive plant growth and water relations. Olive plants were inoculated with native AM fungal populations from two contrasting environments, that is, semi‐arid – Freila (FL) and humid – Grazalema (GZ) regions, and subjected to drought stress. Results showed that plants grew better on GZ soil inoculated with GZ fungi, indicating a preference of AM fungi for their corresponding soil. Furthermore, under these conditions, the highest AM fungal diversity was found. However, the highest root hydraulic conductivity (Lpr) value was achieved by plants inoculated with GZ fungi and growing in FL soil under drought conditions. So, this AM inoculum also functioned in soils from different origins. Nine novel aquaporin genes were also cloned from olive roots. Diverse correlation and association values were found among different aquaporin expressions and abundances and Lpr, indicating how the interaction of different aquaporins may render diverse Lpr values. 相似文献

An ecosystem is generally sustained by a set of integrated physical elements forming a functional landscape unit—ecotope, which supplies nutrients, microclimate, and exchanges matter and energy with the wider environment. To better predict environmental change effects on ecosystems, particularly in critically sensitive regions such as high altitudes, it is imperative to recognise how their natural landscape heterogeneity works at different scales to shape habitats and sustain biotic communities prior to major changes. We conducted a comprehensive survey of catchment physical, geological and ecological properties of 380 high-altitude lakes and ponds in the axial Pyrenees at a variety of scales, to formulate and test an integrated model encompassing major flows and interactions that drive lake ecosystems. Three composite drivers encompassed most of the variability in lake catchment characteristics. In order of total percentage of variance explained, they were (i) hydrology/hydrodynamics—responsible for type and discharge of inlets/outlets, and for waterbody size; (ii) bedrock geomorphology, summarising geology, slope and fractal order—all dictating vegetation cover of catchment slope and lake shore, and the presence of aquatic vegetation; and (iii) topography, that is, catchment formation type—driving lakes connectivity, and the presence of summer snow deposits. Although driver (i) appeared to be local, (ii) and (iii) showed gradient changes along altitude and latitude. These three drivers differentiated several lake ecotopes based on their landscape similarities. The three-driver model was successfully tested on a riparian vegetation composition dataset, further illustrating the validity and fundamental nature of the concept. The findings inform on the relative contribution of scale-dependent catchment physical elements to lake ecotope and ecosystem formation in high-altitude lakes, which should be considered in any assessment of potentially major deleterious effects due to environmental/climate change. 相似文献

In our continuing search for biologically active natural product(s) of plant origin, Buddleja saligna, a South African medicinal plant, was screened in line with its traditional use for antidiabetic (yeast alpha glucosidase inhibitory) and antiplasmodial (against a chloroquine sensitive strain of Plasmodium falciparum (NF54)) activities. The hexane fraction showed the most promising activity with regards to its antidiabetic (IC50?=?260?±?0.112?µg/ml) and antiplasmodial (IC50?=?8.5?±?1.6?µg/ml) activities. Using activity guided fractionation three known terpenoids (betulonic acid, betulone and spinasterol) were isolated from this species for the first time. The compounds displayed varying levels of biological activities (antidiabetic: 27.31?µg/ml?≥?IC50?≥?5.6?µg/ml; antiplasmodial: 14?µg/ml?≥?IC50?≥?2?µg/ml) with very minimal toxicity. 相似文献

Polyamines contribute to several physiological and pathological processes, including cardiac hypertrophy in experimental animals. This involves an increase in ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity and intracellular polyamines associated with cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) increases. The aim of the study was to establish the role of these in the human heart in living patients. For this, polyamines (by high performance liquid chromatography) and the activity of ODC and N1‐acetylpolyamine oxidases (APAO) were determined in the right atrial appendage of 17 patients undergoing extracorporeal circulation to correlate with clinical parameters. There existed enzymatic activity associated with the homeostasis of polyamines. Left atria size was positively associated with ODC (r = 0.661, P = 0.027) and negatively with APAO‐N1‐acetylspermine (r = −0.769, P = 0.026), suggesting that increased levels of polyamines are associated with left atrial hemodynamic overload. Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) and heart rate were positively associated with spermidine (r = 0.690, P = 0.003; r = 0.590, P = 0.021) and negatively with N1‐acetylspermidine (r = −0.554, P = 0.032; r = −0.644, P = 0.018). LVEF was negatively correlated with cAMP levels (r = −0.835, P = 0.001) and with cAMP/ODC (r = −0.794, P = 0.011), cAMP/spermidine (r = −0.813, P = 0.001) and cAMP/spermine (r = −0.747, P = 0.003) ratios. Abnormal LVEF patients showed decreased ODC activity and spermidine, and increased N1‐acetylspermidine, and cAMP. Spermine decreased in congestive heart failure patients. The trace amine isoamylamine negatively correlated with septal wall thickness (r = −0.634, P = 0.008) and was increased in cardiac heart failure. The results indicated that modifications in polyamine homeostasis might be associated with cardiac function and remodelling. Increased cAMP might have a deleterious effect on function. Further studies should confirm these findings and the involvement of polyamines in different stages of heart failure. 相似文献

Aves are represented by abundant fossil remains in Quaternary sites. Birds are well adapted to the environment they inhabit, so they make very good paleoenvironmental indicators for Quaternary sites. Here we analyse the avian remains from the Late Pleistocene (probably MIS3) site of Aguilón P-7 (AGP-7). The Pleistocene sediments fill up a shallow cave, which is located in the Zaragozan part of the Iberian Range, 55 km south of the city of Zaragoza. We have for the first time provided a taxonomic and taphonomic study of the avian assemblage of AGP-7, as well as a preliminary paleoenvironmental analysis based on these data. Nine avian taxa have been identified: Galliformes indet., Lagopus sp., Aquila chrysaetos, Gyps fulvus, Passeridae indet., Anthus sp., Prunella modularis,Sturnus cf. unicolor and Corvus monedula. The taphonomic analysis did not provide conclusive information. However, it suggests an accumulation of uneaten food remains by diurnal birds of prey. The identified taxa currently inhabit the Iberian Peninsula, populating woodland environments with rocky areas. They are found in areas with an oceanic climate, in contrast to the Mediterranean climate that now prevails in Aguilón. 相似文献

In the Cerrado, a tropical ecosystem with seasonal rainfall, we investigated the timing of leaf production and cambial activity, and checked whether these features are related to each other and with climatic and environmental factors. Between September 2011 and December 2012, sampling of main stem and vegetative phenological observations of Kielmeyera grandiflora (Wawra) Saddi (Calophyllaceae) were done monthly to assess seasonality in leaf production and cambial activity, and to compare these features with each other. To check the relationship of bud opening and the onset of cambial activity with climatic and environmental features, the average temperature and day length, and the precipitation sum in a time window ranging from 1 to 30 days before the occurrence of these events were recorded, and the coefficient of variation was calculated. Leaf production and cambial activity were seasonal. Bud opening occurred in September 2011 and August 2012, during the dry season. The onset of cambial activity occurred in October both in 2011 and 2012, 1–2 months after bud opening, at the beginning of the rainy season. The cambium was dormant in May, during the rainy season. Photoperiod and temperature showed low coefficients of variation in the time window before bud opening and onset of cambial activity, while rainfall presented a high coefficient of variation. Thus, both apical and lateral growth are seasonal events in Cerrado species, and are related to each other. A set of climatic and environmental features is related with seasonal growth, among which photoperiod and temperature may be important in the regulation of these events.118.

Many previous studies, both in vitro and with model simulations, have been conducted in an attempt to reach a full understanding of how the different design parameters of an endodontically restored tooth affect its mechanical strength. However, differences in the experimental set-up or modelling conditions and the limited number of parameters studied in each case prevent us from obtaining clear conclusions about the real significance of each parameter. In this work, a new approach is proposed for this purpose based on the combination of a validated three-dimensional parametric biomechanical model of the restored tooth and statistical analysis using full factorial analysis of variance. A two-step approach with two virtual tests (with, respectively, 128 and 81 finite element models) was used in the present work to study the effect of several design parameters on the strength of a restored incisor, using full factorial designs. Within the limitations of this study, and for cases where the parameters are within the ranges that were tested, the conclusions indicate that the material of the post is the most significant factor as far as its strength is concerned, the use of a low Young's modulus being preferable for this component. Once the post material has been chosen, the geometry of the post is of less importance than the Young's modulus selected for the core or, especially, for the crown. 相似文献
