Leukemic histiocytic sarcoma in a captive common squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus) with Saimiriine Gammaherpesvirus 2 (Rhadinovirus), Saimiri sciureus lymphocryptovirus 2 (Lymphocryptovirus) and Squirrel monkey retrovirus (β-Retrovirus) coinfection

Hematopoietic neoplasia other than lymphoma and leukemia is uncommon among non-human primates. Herein, we provide the first evidence of occurrence of leukemic histiocytic sarcoma in a captive common squirrel monkey with Saimiriine Gammaherpesvirus 2 (Rhadinovirus), Saimiri sciureus lymphocryptovirus 2 (Lymphocryptovirus), and Squirrel monkey retrovirus (β-Retrovirus) coinfection.     

Isolation of Arsenic Resistant and Arsenopyrite Oxidizing Acidithiobacillus Species from pH Neutral Colombian Mine Effluents

Abstract

Inactive mines provide a great source of bacterial diversity for studying acidophilic communities and their biotechnological applications, but prospecting of these anthropogenic environments in Colombia has been limited. Conventional microbiological methods were used to isolate acidophilic bacterial strains from effluents emanating from the Colombian gold mine ‘El Zancudo’ (Titiribí, Antioquia). Despite the drainage waters having circumneutral pH, all of the isolated strains were phylogenetically related to the extreme acidophile Acidithiobacillus genus. However, based upon 16S rRNA gene sequences the mesophilic sulfur-oxidizing indigenous strains could not be assigned to a species. Pure cultures were selected by screening in medium with soluble inorganic arsenic (III) and their mineral-oxidative activity was evaluated at 30?°C in Erlenmeyer flasks with arsenopyrite ore under rotary shaking conditions. The indigenous strains were able to catalyze arsenopyrite oxidation in a mixed culture with a pulp density of 10%, maintaining their growth in the presence of >80?mM leached arsenic. This research provides information regarding the isolation of arsenic resistant bacterial communities from neutral effluents from El Zancudo mine and the possibility of the isolated strains to be useful in the biooxidation pretreatment of refractory gold-bearing arsenopyrite ores and concentrates.     

Length-weight relationship of twelve mesopelagic fishes from the western Tropical Atlantic

Length-weight relationship parameters were calculated for twelve mesopelagic fish species from the western Tropical Atlantic: Diretmus argenteus, Melamphaes polylepis, Bolinichthys distofax, Diaphus lucidus, Diaphus splendidus, Electrona risso, Hygophum taaningi, Taaningichthys bathyphilus, Melanolagus bericoides, Winteria telescopa, Diplophos taenia, Astronesthes similus. Data was collected off northeastern Brazil from April 9th to May 6th, 2017. Hauls were conducted during day and night at 47 stations by using a micronekton trawl (body mesh: 40 mm, cod-end mesh: 10 mm) from 10 to 1,113 m depth. The material was fixed in a 4% formalin solution for 1 month and then preserved in a 70% alcohol solution for proximally 6 months before processing for length (nearest 0.1 cm of standard length) and weight (nearest 0.01 g of total weight). A new maximum standard length for Winteria telescopa is also provided.     

Neuroprotective activities of bacopa,lycopene, astaxanthin, and vitamin B12 combination on oxidative stress-dependent neuronal death

Oxidative stress is considered the common effector of the cascade of degenerative events in many neurological conditions. Thus, in this paper we tested different nutraceuticals in H₂O₂ in vitro model to understand if could represent an adjuvant treatment for neurological diseases. In this study, nutraceuticals bacopa, lycopene, astaxanthin, and vitamin B12 were used alone or in combination in human neuronal differentiated SH-SY5Y cells upon hydrogen peroxide-induced injury and neuroprotective, neuronal death pathways were analyzed. The nutraceuticals analyzed were able to protect H₂O₂ cytotoxic effects, through increasing cell viability and proteins involved in neuroprotection pathways and restoring proteins involved in cell death pathways. On this basis, it is possible to propose the use of these compounds as dietary supplement for the prevention or as adjuvant to the only symptomatic treatments so far available for neurodegenerative diseases.

Age structure of strandings and growth of Lahille's bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus gephyreus)

This study describes the age structure and sex-specific growth patterns of Lahille's bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus gephyreus), a subspecies endemic to the Southwest Atlantic Ocean (SWAO). The ages of 120 animals collected in southern Brazil between 1976 and 2017 were determined. We found high frequencies of young animals, mostly males, with no sex bias among adults. A temporal change in the age structure of strandings was observed, and we conclude it is a consequence of increased bycatch rates of young dolphins after 2000. The oldest male and female were 27 and 44 years old, respectively, suggesting that females live longer than males in southern Brazil. Growth curve analysis using Gompertz and Laird-Gompertz growth models estimated asymptotic lengths of 316.5 cm for females and 351.6 cm for males, (reached around 13 and 18 years old, respectively), supporting sexual size dimorphism for the subspecies. A second growth pulse was identified for males. Our work highlights the benefit of long-term studies and contributes valuable information toward understanding the life history of Lahille's bottlenose dolphin. It will serve as baseline for future studies that seek to understand mortality patterns of bottlenose dolphins elsewhere and the effects of anthropogenic actions on the survival of these animals.

Assessment of the efficacy of the utilisation of conventional and electric toothbrushes by the older adults

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of electric and conventional toothbrushes for a group of elderly individuals. Background: Although the electric toothbrush has been recommended for elderly individuals, there had previously never been a study regarding its efficacy. Material and methods: Sixty independent elders of both genders with different oral conditions from the Center Adult Day Vitória, Espírito Santo, Brazil, were randomly divided into two groups of 30 individuals. One group received the Oral B CrossAction Power electric toothbrush, whereas the other received a conventional Bitufo Class 32 soft toothbrush to perform oral hygiene. The bacterial plaque index (O’Leary Plaque Index) and DMFT index were assessed as a measure of oral hygiene and oral health. The data were analysed using the Shapiro–Wilk, Mann–Whitney and Wilcoxon tests. Results: The results of the efficacy of the Oral B Cross Action Power electric toothbrush demonstrated that on the 7th and 15th days, the bacterial plaque indexes were 24.91 ± 12.81 and 22.11 ± 14.46, respectively, which corresponds to a 50.24% removal of bacterial plaque on the 7th and 55.83% on the 15th days. Although the electric toothbrush removed more bacterial plaque than the conventional toothbrush, the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion: Both the conventional and the electric toothbrushes were effective in removing bacterial plaque within the elderly group. More studies are necessary to test the efficacy of electric toothbrushes in relation to conventional toothbrushes for elderly patients.
