Primary structure of abnormal E-like hemoglobin]

An E-like abnormal hemoglobin was detected in a hematological patient and one of the members of her family. The composition of blood hemolyzates was characterized using acetate cellulose electrophoresis. The abnormal beta-chain was isolated by ion-exchange chromatography of total globin on CM-cellulose. Using peptide mapping of the abnormal beta-chain trypsin hydrolysates, it was shown that the amino acid substitution occurs in peptide beta T3. The amino acid analysis and determination of the abnormal fragment C-terminal amino acid allowed to establish the locus and type of this substitution. The first case of hemoglobin E(alpha 2 beta 2 26Glu leads to Lys) identification on the territory of the USSR is reported.     

Artificially Applied Tensions Normalize Development of Relaxed Xenopus laevisEmbryos

Relaxation of tensions of the surface of Xenopus laevisembryos at the late blastula stage leads to deep and diverse developmental defects and increased variability in mutual position and volume ratios of the axial rudiments. Here, we demonstrate that the development of such embryos was markedly normalized if the relaxed tensions were restored in one of two ways: (1) isotropic stretching of the blastocoel roof induced by the incubation of relaxed embryos in a hypotonic medium or (2) anisotropic stretching of embryos on two needles. In the latter case, we succeeded in restoring the morphological axis not only after longitudinal stretching but also after transverse stretching, and the new axis had signs of anteroposterior polarity. The role of isotropic and anisotropic tensions in organization of the early amphibian development is discussed.     

Kinetics of reactions between hemoglobin and carbon monoxide. II. Analysis of kinetic schemes in linear approximation]

The kinetics of hemoglobin (Hb) reactions with carbon monoxide were calculated for a number of classical schemes: with one, two, four binding sites and an allosteric scheme with T- and R-conformers. The developed theory predicts the existence of only one relaxation time for every scheme the values of which depends on the velocity constants, saturation degree and the Hb concentration.     

Free-radical disorders in the tissues of mice exposed to gamma irradiation and neutrons in vitro. The radiochemical yields

The ESR method was used to study free-radical disturbances in tissues of mouse liver and spleen exposed in vitro to gamma-radiation and fission neutrons. It was shown that both types of radiation induced damages to basic chemical components of the cell, namely, DNA, lipids, proteins, and water. The radiochemical yields of each radical registered were obtained and RBE of neutrons were evaluated with a reference to the formation in tissues of radicals of each type. Membrane lipids were shown to be markedly injured by neutrons.
