Infectious diseases are expected to negatively influence essential life history traits of an individual, because investment
in immunological response occurs at the expense of reduced investment in other functions. Here we present the first observational
evidence that the prevalence of blood parasites is negatively associated with avian nest defense. Because the defense of offspring
entails a risk of serious physical harm to the parent, it is also assumed to be a good estimate of parental investment. In
both 1994 and 1995, the nest defense intensity of male Tengmalm's owls (Aegolius funereus) against a live American mink (Mustela vison) was strongly curtailed in parents infected by Trypanosoma avium blood parasites. Our data suggests that investment in reproduction can be negatively affected by parasitaemia, and that host-parasite
interactions may potentially modify hosts' life-history traits, making it important to consider the costs of parasitism in
future studies.

Reproductive output and the growth of captive voles were quantified under high and low avian predation risk in a semi-natural
experiment. Voles were exposed to Eurasian kestrels (Falco tinnunculus), the main avian predator of vole species studied (Clethrionomys glareolus, Microtus agrestis and M. rossiaemeridionalis). Vole pairs were housed in cages settled under nest-boxes occupied by breeding kestrels or in control cages settled under
empty nest-boxes for 2 weeks. The experiment was conducted in mid-summer when kestrels had half-grown nestlings, because in
that time hunting adults and begging nestlings produce noise and scats which may indicate significant predation threat to
voles housed underneath the nest-boxes. The risk of kestrel predation did not have any obvious impact on pregnancy rates,
mean litter sizes, or growth rates of kestrel-exposed voles compared with control voles studied. These results indicate that
the risk of avian predation does not depress the reproductive investment of voles.

In birch, Betula pubescens, herbivore-induced delayed induced resistance (DIR) of defoliated trees may cause a strong reduction in the potential fecundity
of a geometrid folivore Epirrita autumnata. In this study, we examined the biochemical basis of DIR in birch leaves during a natural outbreak of E. autumnata. A set of experimental trees was defoliated at four sites by wild larvae in the peak year of the outbreak, whereas control
trees were protected from defoliation by spraying with an insecticide. The biochemical composition of leaves was analysed
in the following year and, although the DIR response was weak during this outbreak, causing less than a 20% reduction in the
potential fecundity of E. autumnata, some consistent relationships between defoliation, biochemistry and pupal mass of E. autumnata suggested a general biochemical basis for the defoliation-induced responses in birch leaves. Total concentrations of nitrogen,
sugars and acetone-insoluble residue (e.g. cell wall polysaccharides, cell-wall-bound phenolics, protein, starch, lignin and
hemicellulose) were consistently lower, and total concentrations of phenolics, especially of gallotannins and soluble proanthocyanidins,
were higher in the leaves of trees defoliated in the previous year than in those protected from defoliation. The capacity
of tannins to precipitate proteins correlated with contents of gallotannins, and was highest in defoliated trees. The pupal
mass of E. autumnata showed a strong, positive correlation with concentrations of nitrogen and sugars, and a negative correlation with the acetone-insoluble
residue and gallotannins in foliage. Correlations with other measured biochemical traits were weak. The correlation coefficients
between biochemical traits and pupal mass consistently had similar signs for both defoliated and insecticide–sprayed trees,
suggesting that variation in leaf quality due to defoliation in the previous year was based on similar biochemical traits
as variation for other reasons. We suggest that DIR is associated with reduced growth activity of leaves, and may be seen
as a delay in the biochemical maturation of leaves in defoliated trees. This explains the high concentration of gallotannins
in defoliated trees, a characteristic feature of young leaves. However, the lower content of nitrogen and the higher content
of soluble proanthocyanidins in defoliated trees are traits usually characterising mature, not young, leaves, indicating defoliation-induced
changes in chemistry in addition to modified leaf age. Our results emphasise the importance of understanding the natural changes
in chemistry during leaf maturation when interpreting defoliation-induced changes in leaf biochemistry.

Methods were developed for analyzing total organochlorine (TOCl) and total organobromine (TOBr) in different kinds of water, sediment and biological samples. Sediment samples were extracted with alkaline propanone and biological samples with a neutral propanone + water solution. Neutron activation analysis (NAA) was used for the halogen determination. The detection limits for TOCl and TOBr are respectively 5 and 0.5 µg l–1 for water (sample size 100 ml) and 0.3 and 0.1 µg g–1 dw (sample size 1 g) for sediment and biological samples. Recoveries for common organochlorine compounds were usually over 90%.TOCl concentrations measured in waters in a natural condition were below 15 µg l–1; and in polluted waters, from 100 to 500 µg l–1, and occasionally to 2000 µg l–1. Summary In western Finland, yearly median laying dates of Tengmalm's owls varied from 14 March to 27 April during 1973–1989 and were negatively correlated with the winter densities of voles. Yearly mean clutch sizes varied from 4.0 to 6.7 and were more closely related to the spring than to the winter densities of voles. The yearly mean clutch size decreased with yearly median laying date. The 3-year vole population cycle is typical of the study area. The start of egg-laying was earliest in the peak phase of the cycle (median laying date 22 March), when vole numbers are high during egg-laying, but decline rapidly to low numbers in the next autumn or winter. In the increase phase (1 April) vole abundances are moderate at the time of laying, but increase to a peak in the next autumn or winter. In the low phase (15 April) voles are scarce in spring and in the preceding winter, starting to increase in late summer. Clutch size and female body mass were independent of laying date in the low phase, decreased slowly but significantly in the increase phase, and declined abruptly in the peak phase. These trends also held when the effects of territory quality, female age and male age were ruled out. When comparing the same laying periods, clutch sizes were significantly larger in the increase than in other phases of the cycle, but there was no difference between the peak and low phases. Supplementary feeding prior to and during egg-laying increased clutch size independent of laying date. These results agreed with the income model (the rate of energy supply during laying determines clutch size). Tengmalm's owls invest most in a clutch in the increase phase, as the reproductive value of eggs is largest because of high survival of yearlings. Transformed rat kidney cells were found to produce soluble fibronectin in amounts higher than those produced by normal rat kidney cells. In spite of this, they lacked the fibrillar fibronectin network present at the surface of the normal cells. Treatment of the transformed cells with butyrate converted them into extremely flat cells with abundant fibronectin at the cell-substratum interphase. Needle water potential at noon and diurnal variation in needle water potential was measured with a pressure chamber during the growth seasons (1974, 1975 and 1976) in a 20-year-old stand of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.), subjected to daily irrigation and nutrient treatments at Jädraås, in central Sweden (60°50'N).
In unstressed conditions there was little difference in water potential amongst the treatments. However, during a dry spell in 1976 the diurnal curves of water potential in the control and combined irrigated and fertilized treatment diverged by up to 6 bar in the middle of the day. Irrigation alone resulted in higher midday water potentials (Ψn ) than in the controls only during this period. At other times in 1974, 1975 and early 1976, the values of Ψn in the irrigated treatment were similar to the controls. Fertilization alone resulted in higher Ψn than in the controls in both 1975 and 1976 during both wet and dry periods. However, the largest difference between treatment and control occurred in the combined, irrigated and fertilized treatment during the dry spell in 1976.

Raised serum α-fetoprotein levels measured by radioimmunoassay were found in 19 out of 24 (79%) patients with primary liver cancer and in 32 out of 311 (10%) patients with other liver diseases. The rise was transient in cases of hepatitis and a transient rise was also seen after alcohol intake ceased in two patients with cirrhosis. α-Fetoprotein levels exceeding 500 ng/ml were 30-50 times more common in primary liver cancer than in other liver diseases.
