Collagen-fibronectin complexes, formed by binding of fibronectin to gelatin or collagen insolubilized on Sepharose, were found to bind 20–40% of radioactivity in [35S]heparin. Fibronectin attached directly to Sepharose also bound [35S]heparin, while gelatin-Sepharose without fibronectin did not. Unlabeled heparin and highly sulfated heparan sulfate efficiently inhibited the binding of [35S]heparin, hyaluronic acid and dermatan sulfate were slightly inhibitory, while chondroitin sulfates and heparan sulfate with a low sulfate content did not inhibit.The interaction of heparin with fibronectin bound to gelatin resulted in complexes which required higher concentrations of urea to dissociate than complexes of fibronectin and gelatin alone. Heparin as well as highly sulfated heparan sulfate and hyaluronic acid brought about agglutination of plastic beads coated with gelatin when fibronectin was present. Neither fibronectin nor glycosaminoglycans alone agglutinated the beads.It is proposed that the multiple interactions of fibronectin, collagen and glycosaminoglycans revealed in these assays could play a role in the deposition of these substances as an insoluble extracellular matrix. Alterations of the quality or quantity of any one of these components could have important effects on cell surface interactions, including the lack of cell surface fibronectin in malignant cells. 相似文献

Three-to-five-year population oscillations of northern small rodents are usually synchronous over hundreds of square kilometers. This regional synchrony could be due to similarity in climatic factors, or due to nomadic predators reducing the patches of high prey density close to the average density of a larger area. We estimated avian predator and small rodent densities in 4–5 predator reduction and 4–5 control areas (c. 3 km2 each) during 1989–1992 in western Finland. We studied whether nomadic avian predators concentrate at high prey density areas, and whether this decreases spatial variation in prey density. The yearly mean number of avian predator breeding territories was 0.2–1.0 in reduction areas and 3.0–8.2 in control areas. Hunting birds of prey concentrated in high prey density areas after their breeding season (August), but not necessarily during the breeding season (April to June), when they were constrained to hunt in vicinity of the nest. The experimental reduction of breeding avian predators increased variation in prey density among areas but not within areas. The difference in variation between raptor reduction and control areas was largest in the late breeding season of birds of prey, and decreased rapidly after the breeding season. These results appeared to support the hypothesis that the geographic synchrony of population cycles in small mammals may be driven by nomadic predators concentrating in high prey density areas. The extracellular matrix of the adult brain tissue has a uniquecomposition. The striking feature of this matrix is the prominenceof lecticans, proteoglycans that contain a lectin domain anda hyaluronic acid-binding domain. Hyaluronic acid and tenascinfamily adhesive/anti-adhesive proteins are also abundant. Matrixproteins common in other tissues are nearly absent in adultbrain. The brain extracellular matrix appears to have trophiceffects on neuronal cells and affect neurite outgrowth. The fat content of muscle, liver and eggs of vendace (Coregonus albula L.) were measured during the maturation of ovaries in summer. The fat content of eggs was at its highest in July and that of muscle in August during the optimal feeding season. Significant differences were not found in fat content between lakes Suvasvesi and Southern-Kallavesi in central Finland. There were no essential differences in fatty acid composition between muscle, liver and eggs of Lake Suvasvesi vendace. During the last month before spawning in October the gross energy and fat contents of eggs decreased in Lake Suvasvesi vendace. The fat and vitamin C contents of muscle as well as the liver index of females decreased during this time also. In males the corresponding decrease did not occur, indicating that spawning is a greater stress for females than for males. The egg quality and condition of Lake Inarijärvi vendace were about the same as those of Lake Suvasvesi vendace. The unfavourable conditions of Lake Inarijärvi, located in northern Finland, are reflected in the size of ovaries, which is known to be smaller (gonadosomatic index < 20%) than in Lake Suvasvesi (GSI 26–27%). Research on the ecology of top predators – upper trophic level consumers that are relatively free from predation once they reach adult size – has provided regular contributions to general ecology and is a rapidly expanding and increasingly experimental, multidisciplinary and technological endeavour. Yet, an exponentially expanding literature coupled with rapid disintegration into specialized, disconnected subfields for study (e.g. vertebrate predators versus invertebrate predators, community ecology versus biological control etc.) increasingly means that we are losing a coherent, integrated understating of the role and importance of these species in ecosystems. This process of canalization is likely to hinder sharing of scientific discovery and continued progress, especially as there is a growing need to understand the generality of the top–down forcing, as demonstrated for some members of this group. Here, we propose ways to facilitate synthesis by promoting changes in mentality and awareness among specialists through increased debate and collaboration, conceptual reviews and a series of exemplary case studies. The strategy will rely on the collective contribution by all scientists in the field and will strive to consolidate and formalise top‐order predation as a holistic, cohesive, cross‐taxonomical field of research studying the ecology, evolution and behaviour of apex predators and their capability to exert top–down forcing on lower trophic levels. Synthesis The ongoing global loss of top predators and their recolonization of various regions are causing a rapid upsurge of studies on these species and a consequent fragmentation of this field into disconnected, specialized subcompartments: this will weaken efforts to produce synthetic generalisations of broader ecological interest. Here, we show that top predation provides regular contributions to general ecology, is well grounded in theoretical ecology and is a rapidly expanding and increasingly experimental, multidisciplinary and technological field of research. The novelty of this forum lies in providing a concise synthesis of this area of ecology, in attempting to formalise “top predation” as a specific, inter‐connected area of investigation, and in proposing a marked change of mentality by stressing the need for cross‐taxonomic approaches enabling broader views of the role of predators in ecosystems. 相似文献

Do Tengmalm’s Owls alter parental feeding effort under varying conditions of main prey availability?
We studied the diet composition and behavioural responses to variable food conditions in Tengmalm’s Owls (Aegolius funereus). The abundance of main prey (voles and mice) of owls was higher in the Ore Mountains, Czech Republic, than in the Kauhava
region, Finland. We monitored nests continuously by a camera system to estimate the feeding frequency and to identify prey
items provided to nestlings. We recorded 990 prey deliveries at six nests in the Ore Mountains and 1,679 prey deliveries at
nine nests in the Kauhava region. Mice (Apodemus) and voles (Microtus and Clethrionomys) were the main foods of owls in the Ore Mountains, whereas voles (Clethrionomys and Microtus) and shrews (Sorex) were the main foods in the Kauhava region. In consequence, on average smaller prey items were brought to nestlings at the
Finnish site. However, both absolute and relative (per one nestling) feeding frequency was higher in the Kauhava region, and
the biomass available to individual nestlings did not differ between the two areas. Moreover, the Finnish and Czech pairs
produced about the same number of fledglings. Our results suggest that male owls are able to maintain the amount of food required
for chicks by switching to alternative prey, and to increase their prey delivery rates under conditions of reduced abundance
