Rainbow trout p53: cDNA cloning and biochemical characterization.

We have cloned and sequenced the p53-encoding cDNA of rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri). The encoded product contains the characteristics found in all p53 proteins: (i) the five highly conserved domains, (ii) an acidic N terminus, (iii) a hydrophilic C terminus, and (iv) a penultimate serine residue. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the rainbow trout p53 is able to specifically interact with the SV40 large T antigen.     

Metabolic regulation of rice α-amylase and sucrose synthase genes in planta

Isolated rice embryos were used to investigate the regulatory effects of endosperm extracts and pure sugars on the expression of alpha-amylase gene RAmy3D and a sucrose synthase gene homologous to the maize isozyme Ss2. The high-level expression of RAmy3D in the scutella of isolated embryos could be inhibited by a variety of sugars as well as endosperm extracts from germinated rice grains. Glucose, at a concentration of 250 mM, was most effective in repressing RAmy3D mRNA accumulation. Furthermore, this repression was reversible. Interestingly, RAmy3D repression was always accompanied by the induction of sucrose synthase gene expression. These results support a model in which the expression of alpha-amylase and sucrose synthase genes in the rice scutellum are counter-regulated by the influx of sugars from the endosperm.     

An immunocytochemical study of the optic ganglia of the crayfish Astacus leptodactylus (Nordmann 1842) with antisera against biologically active peptides of vertebrates and invertebrates

Summary The peptidergic system in the optic ganglia of Astacus leptodactylus is characterized by the immunocytochemical application of 15 antisera raised against biologically active peptides of vertebrates and invertebrates. Positive reactions were found with anti-FMRFamide, antiMSH, anti-vasotocin, anti-gastrin, anti-CCK, anti-oxytocin, anti-secretin, anti-glucagon and anti-GIP. Based on immunochemical reaction and localization it is possible to distinguish 30 cell groups. Only part of these cell groups is found in the known classical neurosecretory cell regions. This observation demonstrates a more extensive peptidergic system than formerly recognized. The morphology of this peptidergic system suggests that one part is neurohormonal and the other part neurotransmitter-like or neuromodulatory.     

Daphnids respond to algae-associated odours

Using a Y-tube olfactometer, it was found that Daphnia galeatax hyalina moves to the arm with odour from either of two ediblealgal species (Scenedesmus acuminatus and Oscillatoria limnetica)rather than to the alternative arm with clean water. However,no differential response was observed when odours of the toxiccyanobacterium (Oscillatoria agardhu) were tested. We suggestthat odours associated with edible algae attract Daphnia whereasnon-edible algae do not elicit attraction of Daphnia.
