Host-parasite interactions of an urban cockroach, Blattella germanica , and its oxyuroid parasite, Blatticola blattae , were investigated. Life history data of host and parasites were collected under laboratory conditions. These data were used to model the effect of the parasite on the population dynamics of the host in order to understand the parasite's impact on the host population. The aggregation of parasites within a host was under-dispersed. Hosts normally were found to be infected with only one male and one female and rarely two or three. However, the primary sex ratio after hatching was 1.1 (males/females). Female parasite longevity equalled the life span of its host. B. blattae had a significant impact on the survival rate of the cockroach larvae and their time to reach maturity, but no effect on the survival rate of the adults. Infected host females produced fewer first oothecae than uninfected ones. Using the population parameters a simple model was developed to estimate the parasite's effect on the population dynamics of its host. According to the model the parasite suppresses the cockroach populations by ca 11%. Hence, the effect of the parasite does not appear strong enough to be used as a biological control agent by itself.  相似文献

We investigate the determinants of macroparasite species richness of Iberian carnivores. For this, we used the parasitological data collected on 14 species of carnivores over a 10-year period. These previously unpublished data permitted to estimate parasite species richness using estimators of species richness, i.e. Jackknife first order and Chao 2. Most of the parasite species were rare, with low prevalence. Potential determinants were investigated as possible factors explaining the variability of parasites species richness among carnivores host body mass, host geographical range, host longevity and host density. Using independent contrasts, we found positive relationships between residuals of estimates of parasite species richness and residuals in host density, and between residuals of estimates of parasite species richness and residuals in host range. These results are discussed in terms of risk of extinction and invasion abilities related to a possible investment in immune defences correlated with parasite diversity.  相似文献

Annexin 1 (Anx-1) is a mediator of the anti-inflammatory actions of glucocorticoids, but the mechanism of its anti-inflammatory effects is not known. We investigated the role of Anx-1 in the regulation of the proinflammatory cytokine, IL-6. Lung fibroblast cell lines derived from Anx-1(-/-) and wild-type (WT) mice were treated with dexamethasone and/or IL-1. IL-6 mRNA and protein were measured using real-time PCR and ELISA, and MAPK pathway activation was studied. Compared with WT cells, unstimulated Anx-1(-/-) cells exhibited dramatically increased basal IL-6 mRNA and protein expression. In concert with this result, Anx-1 deficiency was associated with increased basal phosphorylated p38, JNK, and ERK1/2 MAPKs. IL-1-inducible phosphorylated p38 was also increased in Anx-1(-/-) cells. The increase in IL-6 release in Anx-1(-/-) cells was inhibited by inhibition of p38 MAPK. Anx-1(-/-) cells were less sensitive to dexamethasone inhibition of IL-6 mRNA expression than WT cells, although inhibition by dexamethasone of IL-6 protein was similar. MAPK phosphatase-1 (MKP-1), a glucocorticoid-induced negative regulator of MAPK activation, was up-regulated by dexamethasone in WT cells, but this effect of dexamethasone was significantly impaired in Anx-1(-/-) cells. Treatment of Anx-1(-/-) cells with Anx-1 N-terminal peptide restored MKP-1 expression and inhibited p38 MAPK activity. These data demonstrate that Anx-1 is an endogenous inhibitory regulator of MAPK activation and IL-6 expression, and that Anx-1 is required for glucocorticoid up-regulation of MKP-1. Therapeutic manipulation of Anx-1 could provide glucocorticoid-mimicking effects in inflammatory disease.  相似文献

1. We studied temporal variation in the structure of flea communities on small mammalian hosts from eastern Slovakia using null models. We asked (a) whether flea co-occurrences in infracommunities (in the individual hosts) in different hosts as well as in the component communities (in the host species) demonstrate a non-random pattern; (b) whether this pattern is indicative of either positive or negative flea species interactions; (c) whether this pattern varies temporally; and (d) whether the expression of this pattern is related to population size of either fleas or hosts or both. 2. We constructed a presence/absence matrix of flea species for each temporal sample of a host species and calculated four metrics of co-occurrence, namely the C-score, the number of checkerboard species pairs, the number of species combinations and the variance ratio (V-ratio). Then we compared these metrics with the respective indices calculated for 5000 null matrices that were assembled randomly using two algorithms, namely fixed-fixed (FF) and fixed-equiprobable (FE). 3. Most co-occurrence metrics calculated for real data did not differ significantly from the metrics calculated for simulated matrices using the FF algorithm. However, the indices observed for 42 of 75 presence/absence matrices differed significantly from the null expectations for the FE models. Non-randomness was detected mainly by the C-score and V-ratio metrics. In all cases, the direction of non-randomness was the same, namely the aggregation, not competition, of flea species in host individuals and host species. 4. The inclusion or exclusion of the uninfested hosts in the FE models did not affect the results for individual host species. However, exclusion of the uninfested host species led to the acceptance of the null hypothesis for only six of 13 temporal samples of the component flea communities for which non-randomness was detected when the uninfested hosts were included in the analysis. 5. In most host species, the absolute values of the standardized size effect of both the C-score and V-ratio increased with an increase in host density and a concomitant decrease in flea abundance and prevalence. 6. Results of this study demonstrated that (a) flea assemblages on small mammalian hosts were structured at some times, whereas they appeared to be randomly assembled at other times; (b) whenever non-randomness of flea co-occurrences was detected, it suggested aggregation but never segregation of flea species in host individuals or populations; and (c) the expression of structure in flea assemblages depended on the level of density of both fleas and hosts.  相似文献

A large number (828) of rodents belonging to nine genera (Bandicota, Berylmys, Chiropodomys, Hapalomys, Leopoldamys, Maxomys, Mus, Niviventer and Rattus) were trapped in four Thai provinces between 2008 and 2010. A new species of Protospirura (Nematoda: Spiruridae) was identified and described. Protospirura siamensis n. sp. was found in 10 rodent species from the four Thai provinces surveyed. The new species can be distinguished from known species of the genus by the arrangement of the papillae on the male and the morphology and length of the spicules. This is the first species of Protospirura to be described from South-East Asia.  相似文献

Parasite-mediated selection on major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes has mainly been explored at the intraspecific level, although many molecular studies have revealed trans-species polymorphism. Interspecific patterns of MHC diversity might reveal factors responsible for the long-term evolution of MHC polymorphism. We hypothesize that host taxa harbouring high parasite diversity should exhibit high levels of MHC genetic diversity. We test this assumption using data on rodent species and their helminth parasites compiled from the literature. Controlling for similarity due to common descent, we present evidence indicating that high helminth species richness in rodent species is associated with increased MHC class II polymorphism. Our results are consistent with the idea that parasites sharing a long-term coevolutionary history with their hosts are the agents of selection explaining MHC polymorphism.  相似文献

The co-evolution between hosts and parasites has long been recognized as a fundamental driver of macro-evolutionary patterns of diversification. The effect of co-differentiation on parasite diversification is, however, often confounded by underlying geographic patterns of host distribution. In order to disentangle the confounding effects of allopatric versus host speciation, the mitochondrial cytochrome b (cyt b) gene was sequenced in seventy individuals of the parasitic nematode genus Heligmosomoides sampled in the six Apodemus mice species common in the western Palearctic region. The nuclear internal transcribed spacers (ITS) 1 and 2 were also sequenced in fifteen parasites to confirm the mitochondrial data. All lineages differentiated according to a geographic pattern and independently from the sampled host species. This suggests that host speciation did not involve concurrent parasite speciation. However, the geographic distribution range of some parasite lineages mirrors that of A. sylvaticus lineages in SW Europe, and that of A. flavicollis lineages in the Balkans and in the Middle East. Thus, regional co-differentiation likely occurred between the parasite and the two sister Apodemus hosts in different parts of their distribution range. We suggest that differences in regional abundances of A. sylvaticus and A. flavicollis are responsible for generating this pattern of regional co-differentiation. This study highlights the importance of integrating both geography and biogeographic information from potential hosts to better understand their parasite phylogeography.  相似文献

Heterochromatic chromosomal regions undergo large-scale reorganization and progressively aggregate, forming chromocenters. These are dynamic structures that rapidly adapt to various stimuli that influence gene expression patterns, cell cycle progression, and differentiation. Np95-ICBP90 (m- and h-UHRF1) is a histone-binding protein expressed only in proliferating cells. During pericentromeric heterochromatin (PH) replication, Np95 specifically relocalizes to chromocenters where it highly concentrates in the replication factories that correspond to less compacted DNA. Np95 recruits HDAC and DNMT1 to PH and depletion of Np95 impairs PH replication. Here we show that Np95 causes large-scale modifications of chromocenters independently from the H3:K9 and H4:K20 trimethylation pathways, from the expression levels of HP1, from DNA methylation and from the cell cycle. The PHD domain is essential to induce this effect. The PHD domain is also required in vitro to increase access of a restriction enzyme to DNA packaged into nucleosomal arrays. We propose that the PHD domain of Np95-ICBP90 contributes to the opening and/or stabilization of dense chromocenter structures to support the recruitment of modifying enzymes, like HDAC and DNMT1, required for the replication and formation of PH.  相似文献

The goal of this study is to determine whether a parasitic nematode may regulate, or destabilise by inducing demographic cycles, its host populations. We explore three host–parasite systems through population dynamic models. The hosts considered are the fossorial water vole, Arvicola terrestris, the common vole Microtus arvalis and the bank vole Myodes (Clethrionomys) glareolus and the parasitic nematode is Trichuris arvicolae. Three differential equation-based mathematical models are developed including host immunity and the existence of trade-off between immunity and host survival. Using parameters estimated from field data and laboratory observations, all these models show that T. arvicolae can induce host population regulation but not demographic cycles. The regulation effect of the nematode is un-ambiguous for the water vole (reduction of 50.2% of the host population size), but less obvious for the common vole (5.9%) and even less for the bank vole (1.4%). Important biological parameters to be taken into account in such models are discussed. Experimental confirmation of the regulatory potential of the nematode and of the costs of mounting an immune response against this nematode are now required. Communicated by W. Lutz  相似文献
