Study of Chromosomes in the Newborn after Ultrasonic Fetal Heart Monitoring in Labour

The effect of continuous-wave ultrasound on the chromosomes of newborn infants has been investigated. Twenty-four women were studied during labour. The fetal heart was monitored by a Sonicaid FM2 monitor applied to the abdomen, and continuous monitoring undertaken for intervals varying from 1 hour 5 minutes to 9 hours 25 minutes. There was no increase in the number of chromosome aberrations in cultures of blood taken from the insonated babies when compared with controls.     

Studies on the lipid composition of the rat liver endoplasmic reticulum after induction with phenobarbitone and 20-methylcholanthrene

1. The cholesterol content, proportions of different phospholipids and fatty acid components of phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine were studied in rat liver endoplasmic-reticulum membrane, after a single injection of 20-methylcholanthrene or injections of phenobarbitone for 5 days. 2. A marked decrease in the proportion of cholesterol occurred 5 days after injection of 20-methylcholanthrene or phenobarbitone. 3. The proportion of phosphatidylcholine was increased by injection of phenobarbitone and minor changes occurred in other phospholipids. 4. Phenobarbitone caused the proportion of linoleic acid in phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine to increase to 120-125% of the control and the proportion of oleic acid, arachidonic acid and docosahexaenoic acid to decrease. 5. 20-Methylcholanthrene caused an increase in the proportion of oleic acid in phosphatidylcholine and ethanolamine to 125-140% of the control, 1 day after injection. 6. The increased proportion of linoleic acid in phosphatidylcholine after phenobarbitone injection occurs simultaneously with the increase of cytochrome P-450 concentration, the rate of oxidative demethylation of aminopyrine and the rate of hydroxylation of biphenyl. It is therefore considered that distinct species of phosphatidylcholine or phosphatidylethanolamine containing linoleic acid in the beta position are essential in the endoplasmic-reticulum membrane for optimal activity of oxidative demethylation.     

Intra- and extraganglionic peripheral cholinergic neurons in the urogenital organs of the cat

Summary The distribution of cholinergic neurons in the urinary tract and male genital organs of the cat was studied by a histochemical method for acetylcholinesterase. In addition to cell clusters in autonomic ganglia (intraganglionic cells), isolated extraganglionic cholinergic cells were found within the innervated tissues, usually in association with nerve trunks and blood vessels. Smaller neural cells with multiple axonal processes, identical to Cajal's interstitial cells, were found in the meshes of the terminal nerve plexus in smooth muscle, lamina propria and vascular wall.It is concluded that peripheral cholinergic neurons, like their adrenergic analogues, are arranged as a short intraganglionic, a shorter extraganglionic, and a terminal system of neurons.Supported in part by grants 10465 and 11285 from the USPHS and the Henry C. The Electrophoretic Velocity of Human Red Cells, of Their Ghosts and Mechanically Produced Fragments, and of Certain Lipid Complexes

Ghosts prepared in CO₂-saturated water from unwashed human red cells can be fragmented mechanically, but ghosts from thrice washed cells cannot. If the ghosts are prepared by freezing and thawing, this difference is not observed. The electrophoretic velocity varies also with the way in which the ghosts are prepared. The pH-mobility dependence of washed red cells flatten off to a plateau at pH 9, and the electrophoretic velocity is zero at about pH 2. Ghosts prepared by freezing and thawing have almost the same pH-mobility dependence, but if the ghosts are prepared in CO₂-saturated hyptonic saline, the mobility at pH 9.4 is 0.75 times that of washed cells. Fragments of ghosts of unwashed red cells have a smaller mobility than that of the red cells. Trypsin reduces the mobility of washed red cells and of ghosts. Sols of lipid complexes (lecithin, cephalin, and lipositol), at varying pH's, have a mobility 1.2 times that of the washed red cell. The pH-mobility relation is otherwise similar. These complexes can be coated with dextran and trypsin.
