of female Wistar rats (200 to 250 g weight), at random stages of their cycle, and dispersal of their pituicytes in a concentration
of 0.4 × 106 cells · ml−1 · well−1 in serum-free medium (Dulbecco’s modified Eagle’s medium/Ham’s F12 mixture, supplemented with insulin and transferrin) in
Falcon 3047 24-well culture plates. After 24 h of pre-culture, the medium was changed and the cells cultured for a further
48 h. The supernatant was removed and assayed for basal secretion of FSH and LH. The cells were then stimulated with 10−8
M GnRH for 4 h and the supernatant assayed for gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-stimulated FSH and LH secretion. All
samples were assayed as pairs of duplicates (i.e. quadruplicate samples) which were randomly added to the plates to minimize

- Fish carcass decomposition can generate fluxes of nutrients to the water column at levels comparable to other major nutrient sources. However, relatively little is known about the biological processes modulating fish decay or the rates at which carcass-bound nutrients are made available to the biota.
- This study focused on quantifying scavenger-mediated phosphorus (P) recycling, because the availability of this essential element can regulate the trophic state of aquatic ecosystems.
- To explore the role of some important macroscopic aquatic scavengers in P recycling, laboratory experiments were conducted where carcasses of two fish species (common bleak Alburnus alburnus; pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus) were offered to two size classes of black bullhead (Ameiurus melas) and two crustacean species (spiny-cheek crayfish Faxonius limosus; narrow-clawed crayfish Astacus leptodactylus).
- Our results show that the black bullhead and the two crayfish species are highly efficient macroscopic decomposers as the P contents of scavenged carcasses were reduced at significantly higher rates compared to those of microbially decomposed (control) carcasses.
- Pumpkinseed carcasses proved to be more resistant to rapid decomposition, as they typically lost lower proportions of their P content than bleak carcasses during the course of the experiments.
- Scavengers sequestered a relatively large fraction (up to 33% in black bullhead and 36% in crayfish) of total carcass P in their bodies. This suggests that the consumer species used in this study can transfer/return considerable quantities of carcass-derived nutrients directly to higher trophic levels incorporated into their own tissues, and may serve as an additional, short-term sink of these nutrients.

Pre- and postnatal superior cervical ganglia of the rat were cultured in Rose chambers for 1-7 days with or without hydrocortisone. Phenylethanolamine-N-methyltransferase (PNMT) was demonstrated by indirect immunofluorescence technique. In cultures without added hydrocortisone, no cells or fibres showed PNMT-immunoreactivity, without regard to the time in culture or the developmental stage at the time of explantation. The first PNMT-immunoreactive cells in hydrocortisone-containing cultures appeared 3 days after the explantation of E14 ganglia, or 1 day after the explantation of E15 ganglia, i.e. at the developmental stage E16-E17. The cultures of neither E14 nor E15 ganglia showed marked fibre growth from the PNMT-immunoreactive cell bodies. On the other hand, in the hydrocortisone-containing cultures of newborn or postnatal rats, there was extensive nerve fibre formation from the PNMT-immunoreactive cells in the course of the culture. ObjectiveTo describe a third-degree polynomial function (hysteresis) of the effect size of age, obesity, and insulin sensitivity over the carotid intima-media thickness (c-IMT), in the pediatric and adult groups.MethodsA quasi-experimental study with fixed factor analysis of age (children aged 8-12 years, n = 73; adults aged 21-45 years, n = 82) and obesity (yes, n = 76; no, n = 79) was conducted to analyze the effect on the c-IMT and Matsuda insulin sensitivity index values. This quasi-experimental design was analyzed with robust regression modeling.ResultsThe additive effect of obesity, independent of age, was evident in the case of the c-IMT values. There was no interaction effect, but a significant difference between participants with normal weight and those with obesity was found (P < .0001). The difference between adults and children was also significant, but the effect size was smaller. A model was created based on age, Tanner stage, and obesity using the c-IMT and Matsuda insulin sensitivity index values. A linear function fit as R2, and the cubic function estimated parameters like a polynomial model.ConclusionThis practical study design showed that children with obesity displayed the same levels of carotid intima-media abnormalities as adults with obesity. The polynomial shape of the model suggests potentially poor outcomes that resemble the hysteresis process and may predict chronic cardiometabolic events during early adulthood. 相似文献
