Background

Preparation of a uniform angle of walls is essential for making an ideal convergence angle in fixed prosthodontics. We developed a de novo detachable angle-correction apparatus for dental handpiece drills that could help the ideal tooth preparation.

Methods

We utilized a gyro sensor to measure the angular velocities to calculate the slope of an object by integrating the values, acceleration sensor to calculate the slope of an object by measuring the acceleration relative to gravity, and Kalman filter algorithm. Converting the angulation of the handpiece body to its drill part could be performed by a specific matrix formulation set on two reference points (2° and 6°). A flexible printed circuit board was used to minimize the size of the device. For convergence angle investigation, 16 volunteers were divided randomly into two groups for performing tooth preparation on a mandibular first molar resin tooth. All abutments were scanned by a 3D scanner (D700®, 3Shape Co., Japan), the convergence angle and tooth axis deviation were analyzed by a CAD program (SolidWorks 2013®, Dassault Systems Co., USA) with statistical analysis by Wilcoxon signed-rank test (α?=?0.05) using SPSS statistical software (Version 16.0, SPSS Inc.).

Results

This device successfully maintained the stable zero point (less than 1° deviation) at different angles (0°, 30°, 60°, 80°) for the first 30 min. In single tooth preparation, without this apparatus, the average bucco-lingual convergence angle was 20.26° (SD 7.85), and the average mesio–distal (MD) convergence angle was 17.88° (SD 7.64). However, the use of this apparatus improved the average BL convergence angle to 13.21° (SD 4.77) and the average MD convergence angle to 10.79° (SD 4.48). The angle correction device showed a statistically significant effect on reducing the convergence angle of both directions regardless of the order of the directions.

Conclusions

The angle correction device developed in this study is capable of guiding practitioners with high accuracy comparable to that of commercial navigation surgery. The volume of the angle correction device is much smaller than that of any other commercial navigation surgery system. This device is expected to be widely utilized in various fields of orofacial surgery.

The pathological effects of exposure to an electromagnetic field (EMF) during adolescence may be greater than those in adulthood. We investigated the effects of exposure to 900 MHz EMF during adolescence on male adult rats. Twenty-four 21-day-old male rats were divided into three equal groups: control (Cont-Gr), sham (Shm-Gr) and EMF-exposed (EMF-Gr). EMF-Gr rats were placed in an EMF exposure cage (Plexiglas cage) for 1 h/day between postnatal days 21 and 59 and exposed to 900 MHz EMF. Shm-Gr rats were placed inside the Plexiglas cage under the same conditions and for the same duration, but were not exposed to EMF. All animals were sacrificed on postnatal day 60 and the hearts were extracted for microscopic and biochemical analyses. Biochemical analysis showed increased levels of malondialdehyde and superoxide dismutase, and reduced glutathione and catalase levels in EMF-Gr compared to Cont-Gr animals. Hematoxylin and eosin stained sections from EMF-Gr animals exhibited structural changes and capillary congestion in the myocardium. The percentage of apoptotic myocardial cells in EMF-Gr was higher than in either Shm-Gr or Cont-Gr animals. Transmission electron microscopy of myocardial cells of EMF-Gr animals showed altered structure of Z bands, decreased myofilaments and pronounced vacuolization. We found that exposure of male rats to 900 MHz EMF for 1 h/day during adolescence caused oxidative stress, which caused structural alteration of male adolescent rat heart tissue.  相似文献

A murine model immunized with plasmid DNA vaccine expressing three glycoproteins pCIgB, pCIgC and pCIgD were used to examine the relative potency of major glycoproteins as well as the contribution of immunological parameters in providing protective immunity against the pseudorabies virus (PrV). Among the three glycoprotein-encoded plasmid DNA vaccines, pCIgB produced the strongest response of PrV-specific IgG in the sera. pCIgB and pCIgD also induced a contrast pattern of immunity that was biased to the Th1 and Th2 types, respectively. pCIgC showed the potent inducer of CD8+ T-cell-mediated CTL activity against PrV. In addition, a cocktail vaccination of all three glycoprotein-encoded plasmid DNA vaccines induced the production of both cytokine types, Th1 and Th2 with levels that were the same as that of each immunogen. With regard to protective efficacy, pCIgB induced the most effective protection against a virulent virus challenge and a cocktail vaccination appeared to offer complete protection against a 5 LD50 challenge, but not a 10 LD50 one. pCIgD induced protection that was same as pCIgB, but pCIgC offered no effective protection. These results show the relative potency of the three glycoprotein-encoded PrV DNA vaccines in inducing protective immunity against PrV infection. The results in this study support previous results showing the importance of Th1-type CD4+ T cells and their antibodies in conferring protection.  相似文献

Consumption of a Western diet rich in saturated fats is associated with obesity and insulin resistance. In some insulin-resistant phenotypes this is associated with accumulation of skeletal muscle fatty acids. We examined the effects of diets high in saturated fatty acids (Sat) or n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) on skeletal muscle fatty acid metabolite accumulation and whole-body insulin sensitivity. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a chow diet (16% calories from fat, Con) or a diet high (53%) in Sat or PUFA for 8 wk. Insulin sensitivity was assessed by fasting plasma glucose and insulin and glucose tolerance via an oral glucose tolerance test. Muscle ceramide and diacylglycerol (DAG) levels and triacylglycerol (TAG) fatty acids were also measured. Both high-fat diets increased plasma free fatty acid levels by 30%. Compared with Con, Sat-fed rats were insulin resistant, whereas PUFA-treated rats showed improved insulin sensitivity. Sat caused a 125% increase in muscle DAG and a small increase in TAG. Although PUFA also resulted in a small increase in DAG, the excess fatty acids were primarily directed toward TAG storage (105% above Con). Ceramide content was unaffected by either high-fat diet. To examine the effects of fatty acids on cellular lipid storage and glucose uptake in vitro, rat L6 myotubes were incubated for 5 h with saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. After treatment of L6 myotubes with palmitate (C16:0), the ceramide and DAG content were increased by two- and fivefold, respectively, concomitant with reduced insulin-stimulated glucose uptake. In contrast, treatment of these cells with linoleate (C18:2) did not alter DAG, ceramide levels, and glucose uptake compared with controls (no added fatty acids). Both 16:0 and 18:2 treatments increased myotube TAG levels (C18:2 vs. C16:0, P < 0.05). These results indicate that increasing dietary Sat induces insulin resistance with concomitant increases in muscle DAG. Diets rich in n-6 PUFA appear to prevent insulin resistance by directing fat into TAG, rather than other lipid metabolites.  相似文献

Background  

Glycogen Synthase Kinase-3 (GSK3) activity is repressed following insulin treatment of cells. Pharmacological inhibition of GSK3 mimics the effect of insulin on Phosphoenolpyruvate Carboxykinase (PEPCK), Glucose-6 Phosphatase (G6Pase) and IGF binding protein-1 (IGFBP1) gene expression. CAAT/enhancer binding protein alpha (C/EBPα) regulates these gene promoters in liver and is phosphorylated on two residues (T222/T226) by GSK3, although the functional outcome of the phosphorylation has not been established. A surgical approach for earlobe keloid: keloid fillet flap   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10  
Earlobe keloid can form after cosmetic ear piercing, trauma, or burns, and it poses several difficulties in treatment and distinctive cosmetic implications. Treatment methods for earlobe keloids include both surgical and nonsurgical methods. After excision of the earlobe keloid, healing by secondary intention, primary suture, skin graft, or local flap has revealed some disadvantages. The authors approached this problem with a new excision and covering method. The surgery was performed under local anesthesia. Skin over the keloid was dissected from the keloid mass as a flap, which they termed a "keloid fillet flap," and the keloid mass was completely removed. Subcutaneous sutures were not used, and the keloid fillet flaps were closed with 6-0 nylon sutures after trimming. Other intraoperative or postoperative preventive procedures, such as steroid injection, pressure device, or irradiation, were not applied primarily. In the period from May of 1999 to October of 2000, nine earlobe keloids in eight patients were treated with this protocol. One patient had bilateral keloids. Of the eight patients, there were six women and two men, ranging in age from 21 to 61 years (mean age, 28.5 years). The causes of keloids were ear piercing in six cases and trauma in three cases. The largest lesion was 3 cm in its greatest dimension, and the smallest was 1.5 cm (mean, 2.3 cm). All flaps survived completely. There were four cases of recurrence. Seven cases, including two recurrences, showed good results. The authors believe the recurrence of earlobe keloid was closely related to the method for coverage of the defect after its surgical excision, and the "5 As and one B" (Asepsis, Atraumatic technique, Absence of raw surface, Avoidance of tension, Accurate approximation of wound margin, and complete Bleeding control) are important factors in reducing the recurrence rate of earlobe keloids in surgical excision. The authors' protocol is very effective in closing the defect after surgical excision of earlobe keloids and offers many advantages over other surgical approaches. The recurrence rate of earlobe keloid may be lower than in their results if other intraoperative and postoperative treatment procedures are combined with their protocol.  相似文献

A novel combined method for locating box H/ACA small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs) is described, together with a software tool. The method adopts both a probabilistic hidden Markov model (HMM) and a minimum free energy (MFE) rule, and filters possible candidate box H/ACA snoRNAs obtained from genomic DNA sequences. With our novel method 12 known box H/ACA snoRNAs, and one strong candidate were identified in 30 nucleolar protein genomic sequences.  相似文献

In this study, we examined the effects of murine chemokine DNA, as genetic adjuvants given mucosally, on the systemic and distal mucosal immune responses to plasmid DNA encoding gB of herpes simplex virus (HSV) by using the mouse model. The CC chemokines macrophage inflammatory protein 1beta (MIP-1beta) and monocyte chemotactic protein 1 (MCP-1) biased the immunity to the Th2-type pattern as judged by the ratio of immunoglobulin isotypes and interleukin-4 cytokine levels produced by CD4(+) T cells. The CXC chemokine MIP-2 and the CC chemokine MIP-1alpha, however, mounted immune responses of the Th1-type pattern, and such a response rendered recipients more resistant to HSV vaginal infection. In addition, MIP-1alpha appeared to act via the upregulation of antigen-presenting cell (APC) function and the expression of costimulatory molecules (B7-1 and B7-2), whereas MIP-2 enhanced Th1-type CD4(+) T-cell-mediated adaptive immunity by increasing gamma interferon secretion from activated NK cells. Our results emphasize the value of using the mucosal route to administer DNA modulators such as chemokines that function as adjuvants by regulating the activity of innate immunity. Our findings provide new insight into the value of CXC and CC chemokines, which act on different innate cellular components as the linkage signals between innate and adaptive immunity in mucosal DNA vaccination.  相似文献
