Generalist herbivores in marine ecosystems are poorly examined for their potential to serve as a source of biotic resistance against algal invasion. We assessed how one of the main generalist herbivores in Mediterranean rocky reefs (the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus) affects Lophocladia lallemandii and Caulerpa racemosa, two algal invaders with strong detrimental effects on native benthic communities. In a comparison of sea urchin gut contents to algal community composition, strong preferences were exhibited, leading to no relationship between consumption and availability. Both C. racemosa and L. lallemandi were abundant in algal assemblages (>60% occurrence), but C. racemosa (20% of diet) was consumed more than L. lallemandi (3.5%). Experimental enclosures of sea urchins (12 sea urchins * m−2) were carried out in locations where L. lallemandii was already established and C. racemosa was rare (new invasion) or abundant (established invasion). C. racemosa was negatively affected by sea urchins only when it was rare, and no effect was detected when the alga was already abundant. Results for L. lallemandi were exactly opposite: urchins limited seasonal increases in L. lallemandi in highly-invaded areas. Because of the small amount of direct consumption of L. lallemandi, its decrease in abundance may be related to the grazing of native algae where L. lallemandii is attached. Overall, our results show that high densities of native herbivores may reduce invasive algae at low densities, due to a combination of direct and indirect effects, but it has no significant effect in highly-invaded areas.  相似文献

The homeobox gene family plays a crucial role during the development of multicellular organisms. The KNOTTED-like genes from Arabidopsis thaliana (KNAT6 and KNAT2) are close relatives of the meristematic genes SHOOT MERISTEMLESS (STM) and BREVIPEDICELLUS, but their function is not currently known. To investigate their role, we identified null alleles of KNAT6 and KNAT2. We demonstrate that KNAT6 contributes redundantly with STM to the maintenance of the shoot apical meristem (SAM) and organ separation. Consistent with this role, the expression domain of KNAT6 in the SAM marks the boundaries between the SAM and cotyledons. The lack of meristematic activity in the knat6 stm-2 double mutant and the fusion of cotyledons were linked to the modulation of CUP-SHAPED COTYLEDON (CUC) activity. During embryogenesis, KNAT6 is expressed later than STM and CUC. In agreement with this fact, CUC1 and CUC2 were redundantly required for KNAT6 expression. These data provide the basis for a model in which KNAT6 contributes to SAM maintenance and boundary establishment in the embryo via the STM/CUC pathway. KNAT2, although the closest related member of the family to KNAT6, did not have such a function.  相似文献

The cover shows the image enhancement of biological tissues provided by the Indices of Polarimetric Purity (IPPs). By measuring the Mueller matrix of a biological sample, using an imaging polarimeter, the IPPs are calculated. They are polarimetric indicators providing further synthetization of depolarizing samples and leading to enhanced image contrast for some biological structures. Landscape and aquatic environments have suffered increasing threats over the last century with major impacts on lentic waters and, presumably, on its inhabiting life. This study aims to evaluate changes in occurrence of aquatic macrophyte flora in lentic waters in Catalonia (NE Spain), emphasizing the last 20 years, with particular reference to vulnerable species. We conducted a survey (2005–2009) identifying macrophytes from 215 lentic water bodies (from eight different geomorphological typologies) and compared the data obtained with a historical compilation (1879–2006) from the Biodiversity Data Bank of Catalonia (BDBC). Vascular hydrophyte species were present in 53.5% of the sampled water bodies and only 69.7% of species cited in the BDBC were re-sampled in the recent survey. Significant changes in species occurrence were also found, particularly for those endangered macrophytes where the ratio of re-sampling was lower (52%). Hydrophyte flora of 36 water bodies has changed over the last 20 years and richness clearly tends to decrease. However, trends are different in each typology; while richness is stable in alpine lakes, it drops for coastal lagoons, ponds and karstic lakes. The threats most correlated with hydrophyte disappearance are water extraction and regulation and desiccation/drainage. To sum up, we detect a loss of hydrophyte diversity at a local and regional scale. Conservation actions are needed to preserve remaining water bodies and flora.  相似文献

Ongoing climate change may undermine the effectiveness of protected area networks in preserving the set of biotic components and ecological processes they harbor, thereby jeopardizing their conservation capacity into the future. Metrics of climate change, particularly rates and spatial patterns of climatic alteration, can help assess potential threats. Here, we perform a continent‐wide climate change vulnerability assessment whereby we compare the baseline climate of the protected area network in North America (Canada, United States, México—NAM) to the projected end‐of‐century climate (2071–2100). We estimated the projected pace at which climatic conditions may redistribute across NAM (i.e., climate velocity), and identified future nearest climate analogs to quantify patterns of climate relocation within, among, and outside protected areas. Also, we interpret climatic relocation patterns in terms of associated land‐cover types. Our analysis suggests that the conservation capacity of the NAM protection network is likely to be severely compromised by a changing climate. The majority of protected areas (~80%) might be exposed to high rates of climate displacement that could promote important shifts in species abundance or distribution. A small fraction of protected areas (<10%) could be critical for future conservation plans, as they will host climates that represent analogs of conditions currently characterizing almost a fifth of the protected areas across NAM. However, the majority of nearest climatic analogs for protected areas are in nonprotected locations. Therefore, unprotected landscapes could pose additional threats, beyond climate forcing itself, as sensitive biota may have to migrate farther than what is prescribed by the climate velocity to reach a protected area destination. To mitigate future threats to the conservation capacity of the NAM protected area network, conservation plans will need to capitalize on opportunities provided by the existing availability of natural land‐cover types outside the current network of NAM protected areas.  相似文献

Geldanamycin interferes with the action of heat shock protein 90 (Hsp90) by binding to the N-terminal ATP binding site and inhibiting an essential ATPase activity. In a program directed toward finding potent, water soluble inhibitors of Hsp90, we prepared a library of over sixty 17-alkylamino-17-demethoxygeldanamycin analogs, and compared their affinity for Hsp90, ability to inhibit growth of SKBr3 mammalian cells, and in selected cases, water solubility. Over 20 analogs showed cell growth inhibition potencies similar to that of 17-allylamino-17-demethoxygeldanamycin (17-AAG), the front-runner geldanamycin analog that is currently in multiple clinical trials. Many of these analogs showed water solubility properties that were desirable for formulation. One of the most potent and water-soluble analogs in the series was 17-(2-dimethylaminoethyl)amino-17-demethoxygeldanamycin (17-DMAG), which was independently prepared by the NCI and will soon enter clinical trials. Importantly, the binding affinity of these analogs to the molecular target Hsp90 does not correlate well with their cytotoxicity in SKBr3 cells.  相似文献

In the process of the chromatin remodeling that occurs during spermiogenesis in some animal species, it is possible to distinguish between two separate aspects: the chromatin condensation pattern itself (granular, fibrillar, or lamellar), and the architecture of this pattern, that is to say, its arrangement within the nucleus. In the cephalopod Octopus vulgaris these two aspects are clearly differentiated. The condensation pattern develops from 25 nm fibers to fibers with a tubular aspect and with a progressively increasing diameter (40-60 nm and then to 80 nm), to end finally in the form of very thin fibers (3-5 nm) product of the coalescence and dissolution of the major fibers. The main directive force that governs this process lies in the global change that occurs in the proteins that interact with all (or the major part) of the genomic DNA. The condensation pattern by itself in this species does not present a fixed order: most of the fibers appear without any predominant spatial direction in the spermiogenic nuclei. However, as the nuclei elongate, the chromatin fibers arrange in parallel following the elongation axis. This parallel disposition of the chromatin fibers appears to be mediated by two specific areas, each of which we call a "polar nuclear matrix" (PNM). These matrices differentiate in the basal and apical nuclear poles adjacent to the centriolar implantation fosse and the acrosome, respectively. The areas that constitute the PNM have the following characteristics: (a) they are the only areas where DNA is found anchored to the nuclear membrane; (b) they are the zones from which the chromatin condensation pattern (fibers/tubules) begins; and (c) they are most probably the points through which the mechanical forces originating from nuclear elongation are transmitted to chromatin, causing the chromatin fibers/tubules to adopt an almost perfectly parallel disposition. Finally, we discuss the importance of the architecture of the chromatin condensation pattern, as it is one of the determining factors of the spatial organization of the mature sperm genome and chromosome positioning.  相似文献

Nitrosative stress has become a usual term in the physiology of nitric oxide in mammalian systems. However, in plants there is much less information on this type of stress. Using olive leaves as experimental model, the effect of salinity on the potential induction of nitrosative stress was studied. The enzymatic l-arginine-dependent production of nitric oxide (NOS activity) was measured by ozone chemiluminiscence. The specific activity of NOS in olive leaves was 0.280nmol NOmg(-1) proteinmin(-1), and was dependent on l-arginine, NADPH and calcium. Salt stress (200mM NaCl) caused an increase of the l-arginine-dependent production of nitric oxide (NO), total S-nitrosothiols (RSNO) and number of proteins that underwent tyrosine nitration. Confocal laser scanning microscopy analysis using either specific fluorescent probes for NO and RSNO or antibodies to S-nitrosoglutathione and 3-nitrotyrosine, showed also a general increase of these reactive nitrogen species (RNS) mainly in the vascular tissue. Taken together, these findings show that in olive leaves salinity induces nitrosative stress, and vascular tissues could play an important role in the redistribution of NO-derived molecules during nitrosative stress.  相似文献

Juvenile loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) from Atlantic nesting populations migrate into the western Mediterranean, where they share feeding grounds with turtles originating in the Mediterranean. In this scenario, male-mediated gene flow may lead to the homogenization of these distant populations. To test this hypothesis, we genotyped 7 microsatellites from 56 Atlantic individuals sampled from feeding grounds in the western Mediterranean and then compared the observed allele frequencies with published data of 112 individuals from Mediterranean nesting beaches. Mediterranean populations were found to be genetically differentiated from the Atlantic stock reaching the western Mediterranean (F(st) = 0.029, P < 0.001); therefore, the possible mating events between Atlantic and Mediterranean individuals are not sufficient to homogenize these 2 areas. The differentiation observed between these 2 areas demonstrates that microsatellites are sufficiently powerful for mixed stock analysis and that individual assignment (IA) tests can be performed in combination with mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analysis. In a set of 197 individuals sampled in western Mediterranean feeding grounds, 87% were robustly assigned to Atlantic or Mediterranean groups with the combined marker, as compared with only 52% with mtDNA alone. These findings provide a new approach for tracking the movements of these oceanic migrants and have strong implications for the conservation of the species.  相似文献
