Plants living on gypsum have received remarkably little study, despite being one of the most important groups of endemic and
rare plants in arid and semi-arid regions. This work is among the first to study the mating system of a gypsophyte, Helianthemum squamatum (Cistaceae), which is a short-lived perennial endemic to gypsum habitats of the Iberian Peninsula. We carried out a hand-pollination
experiment, considering the following pollination treatments: autogamy, geitonogamy, xenogamy and control (open-pollination).
Generalized linear mixed models were fitted to evaluate the effect of the treatment on the fruit set and the number of viable
seeds yielded per fruit. Both response variables were significantly higher in the xenogamy treatment than in the autogamy
and geitonogamy treatments. No significant differences were detected between the xenogamy treatment and the control group,
indicating that H. squamatum is mainly an outcrosser although partially self-compatible. Our results also suggest that pollen limitation may only slightly
affect the reproductive success of H. squamatum. In contrast with the general tendency towards self-compatibility previously described in short-lived species of the Cistaceae,
this outcrossing mating system resembles the one of long-lived perennials

Abstract. Seed bank spatial pattern was studied in a secondary forest dominated by Fagus sylvatica and Betula celtiberica in the Urkiola Natural Park (N Spain). Soil samples were taken every 2 m in a regular grid (196 points) and divided into two fractions (0–3 cm and 3–10 cm deep). The viable seed bank was studied by monitoring seedling emergence for ten months. The effect of different factors on seed bank composition and patterning was analysed using constrained ordination as a hypothesis testing tool. Furthermore, the existence of spatial autocorrelation was evaluated by geostatistical analysis. Seed density was high, 7057 seed.m?2, with a few species dominating. Species composition in the various layers were significantly correlated. The seed bank showed significant spatial structure, which was partially explainable by the spatial structure of the canopy and understorey vegetation. Spatial clumping from 0–8 m was observed in seed bank density and composition, mainly due to the pattern of two abundant taxa Juncus effusus and Ericaceae. The Ericaceae seed bank was related to the spatial distribution of dead stumps of Erica arborea. J. effusus was not present in the above‐ground vegetation, which indicates that its seed bank was formed in the past. As expected, the seed bank of this forest reflects its history, which is characterized by complex man‐induced perturbations. The seed bank appears to be structured as a consequence of contrasting driving forces such as canopy structure, understorey composition and structural and microhabitat features. 相似文献

Proformica longiseta, an ant species endemic to certain high mountains, has been studied with regard to its tendency to nest underneath rocks. This behaviour led us to investigate whether a particular type of rock is selected, and, if so, the advantages to this species of the selection. This study was located at 2400 m above sea-level in the Sierra Nevada mountains (Granada, Spain). To determine the range of rock sizes available, in eight control plots the thicknesses were recorded and also the maximum and minimum diameters of all rocks with surface area of more than 6 cm2. A total of 1724 rocks were recorded, noting among the rock types available those that were used for nesting. Also as a preliminary estimate of the thermal characteristics of the rocks, we recorded the temperatures of the air, soil surface, soil under a rock covering an ant nest, and soil at 30 cm depth. The results indicate thatP. longiseta selects flat rocks with a surface area/thickness ratio of 2–5, the thickness being not less than 1.5 cm, the surface area being 50–250 cm2 and volume less than 1000 cm3. This type of rock offers the nests two beneficial but apparently contradictory effects: (1) protection against high temperatures on hot days, and (2) warmth on colder days by absorbing the diffusing solar heat more effectively than the air or soil around the nest. 相似文献

Investment in anti-herbivore defence in tree species has been one of the priority research topics in plant terrestrial ecology during the last decades. However, despite considerable experimental effort, interspecific differences in the ontogenetic trends in the investment in defence are still a matter of debate, as to date experimental evidence is contradictory. In the present work, insect herbivory levels were measured in seedlings and mature trees of four co-occurring Mediterranean Quercus species with differing leaf life spans, as well as several leaf characteristics that can determine herbivore preference. The measured leaf traits included nitrogen (N), fibre (cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin), total phenolic contents, leaf mass per unit area (LMA) and leaf thickness. The leaves of seedlings had a lower LMA and leaf thickness and lower concentrations of N and cellulose, but higher concentrations of lignin and phenols than those of mature trees. However, the loss of leaf area tended to be more severe for seedlings than for mature trees, although the differences were only significant for deciduous species. This constitutes a confirmation of the strong effects of physical traits on herbivore preferences. The greater resource limitations for defensive mechanisms in seedlings with respect to mature trees would explain that at intraspecific level we do observe a compromise between chemical and physical defences. Hormonal levels, mainly those of estrogens, protect women from the appearance of cardiovascular diseases by an increasing nitric oxide (NO) activity. NO is an endogenous vasodilator and antiaggregating substance. We decided to investigate platelet function and plasma levels of nitric oxide during preovulatory and midluteal phases in young and healthy women with normal menstrual cycles (MCs). Nine young, healthy female subjects had recorded three consecutive MCs before entering this program. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) was used for the determination of platelet aggregation and NO measurements. Moreover, platelet sensitivity to the inhibitory effect of exogenous NO was tested. The EC(50) of collagen showed no differences between the preovulatory (1.36+/-0.16 microg/mL) and the midluteal (1.31+/-0.08 microg/mL; P, NS) phases. However, the EC(90) during the preovulatory phase was higher (2.05+/-0.2 microg/mL) than during the midluteal phase (1.8+/-0.6 microg/mL). Plasma levels of NO were lower during the preovulatory phase (19.1+/-2 microM) in comparison to the midluteal phase (20.9+/-2.3 microM). Interestingly, the exogenous amount of NO to produce at least half of the inhibition of an EC(90) collagen-induced aggregation was higher at the preovulatory phase (323.3+/-60.9 nM) than during the midluteal phase (240.0+/-37.5 nM; P, NS). We propose that during the follicular phase platelets rather use NO produced by the endothelium; therefore, it is necessary to add more agonist to activate those, but it results in higher consumption of circulating NO, whereas during luteal-phase platelets are not able to use NO, requiring lower amounts of agonist and thus resulting in higher plasma levels of NO. RNA function is determined by its structural organization. The RNA structure consists of the combination of distinct secondary structure motifs connected by junctions that play an essential role in RNA folding. Selective 2′-hydroxyl acylation analyzed by primer extension (SHAPE) probing is an established methodology to analyze the secondary structure of long RNA molecules in solution, which provides accurate data about unpaired nucleotides. However, the residues located at the junctions of RNA structures usually remain undetected. Here we report an RNA probing method based on the use of a novel open-paddlewheel diruthenium (OPW-Ru) compound [Ru2Cl2(µ-DPhF)3(DMSO)] (DPhF = N,N′-diphenylformamidinate). This compound has four potential coordination sites in a singular disposition to establish covalent bonds with substrates. As a proof of concept, we have analyzed the reactivity of OPW-Ru toward RNA using two viral internal ribosome entry site (IRES) elements whose function depends on the structural organization of the molecule. Our study suggests that the compound OPW-Ru preferentially attacks at positions located one or two nucleotides away from junctions or bulges of the RNA structure. The OPW-Ru fingerprinting data differ from that obtained by other chemical reagents and provides new information about RNA structure features. 相似文献
