How can “Super Corals” facilitate global coral reef survival under rapid environmental and climatic change? 下载免费PDF全文
Coral reefs are in a state of rapid global decline via environmental and climate change, and efforts have intensified to identify or engineer coral populations with increased resilience. Concurrent with these efforts has been increasing use of the popularized term “Super Coral” in both popular media and scientific literature without a unifying definition. However, how this subjective term is currently applied has the potential to mislead inference over factors contributing to coral survivorship, and the future trajectory of coral reef form and functioning. Here, we discuss that the information required to support a single definition does not exist, and in fact may never be appropriate, i.e. “How Super is Super”? Instead, we advocate caution of this term, and suggest a workflow that enables contextualization and clarification of superiority to ensure that inferred or asserted survivorship is appropriate into future reef projections. This is crucial to robustly unlock how “Super Corals” can be integrated into the suite of management options required to facilitate coral survival under rapid environmental and climate change. 相似文献

Endospores of thermophilic bacteria are found in cold and temperate sediments where they persist in a dormant state. As inactive endospores that cannot grow at the low ambient temperatures, they are akin to tracer particles in cold sediments, unaffected by factors normally governing microbial biogeography (e.g., selection, drift, mutation). This makes thermophilic endospores ideal model organisms for studying microbial biogeography since their spatial distribution can be directly related to their dispersal history. To assess dispersal histories of estuarine bacteria, thermophilic endospores were enriched from sediments along a freshwater‐to‐marine transect of the River Tyne in high temperature incubations (50°C). Dispersal histories for 75 different taxa indicated that the majority of estuarine endospores were of terrestrial origin; most closely related to bacteria from warm habitats associated with industrial activity. A subset of the taxa detected were marine derived, with close relatives from hot deep marine biosphere habitats. These patterns are consistent with the sources of sediment in the River Tyne being predominantly terrestrial in origin. The results point to microbial communities in estuarine and marine sediments being structured by bi‐directional currents, terrestrial run‐off and industrial effluent as vectors of passive dispersal and immigration. 相似文献

Calcineurin is a conserved calcium/calmodulin‐dependent protein phosphatase, consisting of a catalytic subunit A and a regulatory subunit B, which is involved in calcium‐dependent signalling and regulation of various important cellular processes. In this study, we functionally characterized the catalytic subunit A (CnaA) of the endophytic fungus Epichloë festucae which forms a symbiotic association with the grass host Lolium perenne. We deleted the CnaA‐encoding gene cnaA in E. festucae and examined its role in hyphal growth, cell wall integrity and symbiosis. This ΔcnaA strain had a severe growth defect with loss of radial growth and hyper‐branched hyphae. Transmission electron microscopy and confocal microscopy analysis of the mutant revealed cell wall defects, aberrant septation and the formation of intrahyphal hyphae, both in culture and in planta. The mutant strain also showed a reduced infection rate in planta. The fluorescence of mutant hyphae stained with WGA‐AF488 was reduced, indicating reduced chitin accessibility. Together, these results show that E. festucae CnaA is required for fungal growth, maintaining cell wall integrity and host colonization. 相似文献

In vivo terahertz (THz) imaging of human skin needs to be done in reflection geometry due to the high attenuation of THz light by water in the skin. To aid the measurement procedure, there is typically an imaging window onto which the patient places the area of interest. The window enables better pulse alignment and helps keep the patient correctly positioned during the measurement. In this paper, we demonstrate how the occlusion caused by the skin contact with the imaging window during the measurement affects the THz response. By studying both rapid point measurements and imaging over an area of a human volar forearm, we find that even 5 seconds of occlusion affects the THz response. As the occlusion time increases, the skin surface water content increases, resulting in the reduction of the amplitude of the reflected THz pulse, especially in the first 3 minutes. Furthermore, it was found that the refractive index of the volar forearm increased by 10% to 15% after 20 minutes of occlusion. In this work, we examine and propose a model for the occlusion effects due to the quartz window with a view to compensating for its influence. 相似文献

A polymorphic microsatellite marker (D2S125) was recently reported to show significant linkage to non-insulin dependent diabetes
mellitus (NIDDM) in a population of Mexican-American affected sib-pairs. We have used a simple non-isotopic screening technique
employing the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with a biotinylated primer to study the genetic linkage and allele frequency
distribution of the D2S125 marker in a population of 109 British NIDDMs (62 possible affected sib-pairs). The analysis provided
no evidence for linkage of the D2S125 marker in the British subjects (MLS = 0.029, P > 0.05). The PCR screening method used proved to be a convenient and reliable alternative to the radiolabelling of PCR products.

The New Zealand ascidian Pyura pachydermatina has a 7–10 cm long body at the end of a stalk up to 1 m long and 1–2 cm in diameter. Two different spicule types are present: dumbbell-shaped spicules of calcite in the fibrous tunic that covers the body and stalk, and antler-shaped spicules of amorphous calcium carbonate in the soft body tissues. Both types form extracellularly within a closed compartment surrounded by an epithelium of sclerocytes. In adults the tunic spicules form in 2–3 weeks in the lumen of the tunic blood vessels, as determined by calcein uptake studies. They add mineral only while surrounded by the sclerocyte epithelium, which is anchored to the vessel wall. Ultimately the sclerocytes rupture at one or more leading points on the spicule. The blood vessel epithelium also becomes very thin at these points and either ruptures or the cells separate. allowing the spicules to migrate out into the tunic. The sclerocytes degenerate and the blood vessel closes behind the migrating spicule, thus maintaining the vessel's integrity. Tunic spicules accumulate in the subcuticular region of the stalk, but the outermost layer of tunic covering the body is periodically sloughed off along with some spicules. This gives the "neck" between body and stalk a flexibility that allows it to orient to currents, and prevents an accumulation of epizoic organisms on the body. The antler spicules form within blood sinuses of the body tissues. The mineral and organic material are arranged in concentric layers. In the branchial sac, oral tentacles, gut and endostyle, where antler spicules occur most densely, the branches interlock, providing support to the soft tissues. They are of many sizes and apparently remain where they form, increasing in number and size throughout the animal's lifespan. 相似文献

A method based upon targetting of intro-gressed markers in a Phomopsis-resistant line (R) of cultivated sunflower, issuing
from a H. argophyllus cross was used to mark the Phomopsis resistance regions. Our study was based upon 203 families derived from a cross between an inbred line susceptible to Phomopsis (S1) and the introgressed resistant line (R).
Families were checked for Phomopsis resistance level in a design with replicated plots and natural infection was re-inforced
by pieces of contaminated stems. Thirty four primers were employed for RAPD analysis. Out of 102 polymorphic fragments between
(S1) and H. argophyllus, seven were still present in (R) suggesting that they marked introgressions of H. argophyllus into (R). The plants were scored for the presence or absence of 19 fragments obtained from five primers, and the relationships between
the presence/absence of fragments in plants and Phomopsis resistance/susceptiblity in the progenies was determined by using an analysis of variance. We found that at least two introgressed regions, as well as favourable
factors from sunflower, contributed to the level of Phomopsis resistance in cultivated sunflower.

Trawl data from Scottish research vessels dating from January 1925 show that catches of the warm water pelagic species, anchovy ( Engraulis encrasicholus ) and sardine ( Sardina pilchardus ), increased suddenly after 1995. Most were observed in the first quarter of each year, with 1998 and 2003 having the largest numbers, although few data are available for the last quarter. The authors believe that these long-term changes are related to rising sea temperatures although the exact causal mechanism is not clear. 相似文献
