Patient studies suggest that speech and environmental sounds are differentially processed by the left and right hemispheres. Here, using functional imaging in normal subjects, we compared semantic processing of spoken words to equivalent processing of environmental sounds, after controlling for low-level perceptual differences. Words enhanced activation in left anterior and posterior superior temporal regions, while environmental sounds enhanced activation in a right posterior superior temporal region. This left/right dissociation was unchanged by different attentional/working memory contexts, but it was specific to tasks requiring semantic analysis. While semantic processing involves widely distributed networks in both hemispheres, our results support the hypothesis of a dual access route specific for verbal and nonverbal material, respectively.  相似文献

Early life stages of marine organisms are predicted to be vulnerable to ocean acidification. For macroalgae, reproduction and population persistence rely on spores to settle, adhere and continue the algal life cycle, yet the effect of ocean acidification on this critical life stage has been largely overlooked. We explicitly tested the biomechanical impact of reduced pH on early spore adhesion. We developed a shear flume to examine the effect of reduced pH on spore attachment time and strength in two intertidal rhodophyte macroalgae, one calcified (Corallina vancouveriensis) and one noncalcified (Polyostea robusta). Reduced pH delayed spore attachment of both species by 40%–52% and weakened attachment strength in C. vancouveriensis, causing spores to dislodge at lower flow‐induced shear forces, but had no effect on the attachment strength of P. robusta. Results are consistent with our prediction that reduced pH disrupts proper curing and gel formation of spore adhesives (anionic polysaccharides and glycoproteins) via protonation and cation displacement, although experimental verification is needed. Our results demonstrate that ocean acidification negatively, and differentially, impacts spore adhesion in two macroalgae. If results hold in field conditions, reduced ocean pH has the potential to impact macroalgal communities via spore dysfunction, regardless of the physiological tolerance of mature thalli.  相似文献

Adenosine triphosphate phosphoribosyltransferase (ATP‐PRT) catalyzes the first committed step of the histidine biosynthesis in plants and microorganisms. Here, we present the functional and structural characterization of the ATP‐PRT from the pathogenic ε‐proteobacteria Campylobacter jejuni (CjeATP‐PRT). This enzyme is a member of the long form (HisGL) ATP‐PRT and is allosterically inhibited by histidine, which binds to a remote regulatory domain, and competitively inhibited by AMP. In the crystalline form, CjeATP‐PRT was found to adopt two distinctly different hexameric conformations, with an open homohexameric structure observed in the presence of substrate ATP, and a more compact closed form present when inhibitor histidine is bound. CjeATP‐PRT was observed to adopt only a hexameric quaternary structure in solution, contradicting previous hypotheses favoring an allosteric mechanism driven by an oligomer equilibrium. Instead, this study supports the conclusion that the ATP‐PRT long form hexamer is the active species; the tightening of this structure in response to remote histidine binding results in an inhibited enzyme.  相似文献

1 Previous work had suggested that adult male click beetles (Agriotes spp.) show differential responses to species specific pheromone traps. This hypothesis was tested using mark–release–recapture methods to estimate the maximum sampling range and the effective sampling area of traps for three species. 2 Captured beetles of the species Agriotes lineatus, Agriotes obscurus and Agriotes sputator were marked to show the direction of release, the distance of the release point from the trap and the replicate. Analysis of variance showed that there were significant differences in recapture rates between species and release distances. There were no significant differences between release direction and replicates. 3 Calculated linear speeds suggested differences in movement rates in the order: A. lineatus > A. obscurus > A. sputator. There were also substantial differences between the species in the maximum sampling ranges and effective sampling areas of the traps. These placed the species in the same order. 4 The results are used to estimate the minimum cost of mass trapping programmes to prevent males from mating, giving values of €165/ha/year (A. lineatus), €247.5/ha/year (A. obscurus) and €2343/ha/year (A. sputator). 5 Implications for the use of pheromone traps in wireworm pest management are discussed. It is concluded that current U.K. recommendations based on the cumulative total catch of the three species over a sampling season can be improved by considering the spatial relationships between the adult trapping system and larval distribution. The current constraint to this is the general inability to separate wireworms into species.  相似文献

An intracellular bacterium originally isolated from hatchery-reared juvenile white seabass Atractoscion nobilis in southern California, USA, was identified by sequences of the small and large subunit ribosomal (16S and 23S) DNA and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) as Piscirickettsia salmonis. Considering all rDNA sequences compared, the white seabass isolate (WSB-98) had a 96.3 to 98.7% homology with 4 previously described strains of P. salmonis isolated from salmon in Chile, Norway, and British Columbia, Canada. Experimental infections induced by intraperitoneal injections of juvenile white seabass with WSB-98 resulted in disease and mortality similar to that observed in P. salmonis infections in salmon. After 60 d, the cumulative mortality among P. salmonis-injected white seabass was 82 and 40%, respectively, following a high (1.99 x 10(4) TCID50) or low (3.98 x 10(2) TCID50) dose-challenge with WSB-98. The bacterium was recovered by isolation in cell culture or was observed in stains from tissues of injected white seabass but not from control fish. There were no external signs of infection. Internally, the most common gross lesion was a mottled appearance of the liver, sometimes with distinct nodules. Microscopic lesions were evident in both the capsule and parenchyma of the liver and were characterized by multifocal necrosis, often with infiltration of mononuclear leukocytes. Macrophages filled with bacteria were present at tissue sites exhibiting focal necrosis. Foreign body-type granulomas were prevalent in livers of experimentally infected white seabass, but not in control fish. Similar granulomatous lesions were observed in the spleen, kidney, intestine and gills, but these organs were considered secondary sites of infection, with significantly fewer and less severe histologic lesions compared to the liver. The results from this study clearly indicate that infections with P. salmonis are not restricted to salmonid fishes and that the bacterium can cause a disease similar to piscirickettsiosis in nonsalmonid hosts.  相似文献

The pathogenesis of infantile hemangioma is unknown. In recent years, much of the focus has been placed at identifying the cell type(s) responsible for tumor initiation. New discoveries in infantile hemangioma suggest an involvement of progenitor cells in the pathogenesis of this vascular tumor. Both embryonic and extra-embryonic tissues have been postulated as potential sources for these progenitor cells. This review focuses on the placental theory, which proposes that a fetal placental progenitor is the cell type of origin for infantile hemangioma. Special emphasis will be placed on placental vasculogenesis and the presence and transit of placental progenitor cells during gestation.  相似文献
