Chance and serendipity have long played a role in the location of productive fossil localities by vertebrate paleontologists and paleoanthropologists. We offer an alternative approach, informed by methods borrowed from the geographic information sciences and using recent advances in computer science, to more efficiently predict where fossil localities might be found. Our model uses an artificial neural network (ANN) that is trained to recognize the spectral characteristics of known productive localities and other land cover classes, such as forest, wetlands, and scrubland, within a study area based on the analysis of remotely sensed (RS) imagery. Using these spectral signatures, the model then classifies other pixels throughout the study area. The results of the neural network classification can be examined and further manipulated within a geographic information systems (GIS) software package. While we have developed and tested this model on fossil mammal localities in deposits of Paleocene and Eocene age in the Great Divide Basin of southwestern Wyoming, a similar analytical approach can be easily applied to fossil-bearing sedimentary deposits of any age in any part of the world. We suggest that new analytical tools and methods of the geographic sciences, including remote sensing and geographic information systems, are poised to greatly enrich paleoanthropological investigations, and that these new methods should be embraced by field workers in the search for, and geospatial analysis of, fossil primates and hominins.  相似文献

Differences in forelimb length between male and female frogs and between amplexing and non-amplexing males have been interpreted to be the results of sexual selection on forelimb length. The causal feature of the forelimb that has been posited to cause such selection is the observation that non-amplexing males attempt to disrupt breeding by prying amplexing males from females. A biomechanical model of forelimb function suggests that total length per se may not be the most appropriate measure to use. There are more functionally significant aspects of forelimb morphology, such as lever arm lengths, that should influence amplexing ability and may make measures of overall forelimb length misleading. This example highlights the relevance of functional analysis to current questions in evolutionary biology that rely on postulated roles for morphological structures under selection.  相似文献

This study evaluated double blind ingestions of placebo (PLA) versus 6% carbohydrate (CHO) either as capsules (c) or beverage (b) during 60 km self-paced cycling in the heat (32°C and 50% relative humidity). Ten well-trained males (mean ± SD: 26±3 years; 64.5±7.7 kg and 70.7±8.8 ml.kg−1.min−1 maximal oxygen consumption) completed four separate 60 km time trials (TT) punctuated by 1 km sprints (14, 29, 44, 59 km) whilst ingesting either PLAb or PLAc or CHOb or CHOc. The TT was not different among treatments (PLAb 130.2±11.2 min, CHOb 140.5±18.1 min, PLAc 143.1±29.2 min, CHOc 137.3±20.1 min; P>0.05). Effect size (Cohen’s d) for time was only moderate when comparing CHOb – PLAb (d = 0.68) and PLAb – PLAc (d = 0.57) whereas all other ES were ‘trivial’ to ‘small’. Mean speed throughout the trial was significantly higher for PLAb only (P<0.05). Power output was only different (P<0.05) between the sprints and low intensity efforts within and across conditions. Core and mean skin temperatures were similar among trials. We conclude that CHO ingestion is of little or no benefit as a beverage compared with placebo during 60 km TT in the heat.  相似文献

Microbiome engineering is increasingly being employed as a solution to challenges in health, agriculture, and climate. Often manipulation involves inoculation of new microbes designed to improve function into a preexisting microbial community. Despite, increased efforts in microbiome engineering inoculants frequently fail to establish and/or confer long-lasting modifications on ecosystem function. We posit that one underlying cause of these shortfalls is the failure to consider barriers to organism establishment. This is a key challenge and focus of macroecology research, specifically invasion biology and restoration ecology. We adopt a framework from invasion biology that summarizes establishment barriers in three categories: (1) propagule pressure, (2) environmental filtering, and (3) biotic interactions factors. We suggest that biotic interactions is the most neglected factor in microbiome engineering research, and we recommend a number of actions to accelerate engineering solutions.Subject terms: Community ecology, Microbial ecology

Microbiome engineering is a rapidly evolving frontier for solutions to improve human health, agricultural productivity, and climate management. Microbiome engineering seeks to improve the function of an ecosystem by manipulating the composition of microbes. Two major challenges for successful microbiome engineering are (1) the design of a microbiome with improved function and (2) the establishment of an improved microbiome in a recipient system of interest. While multiple articles and reviews have addressed functional design [13], microbiome establishment has received less attention. Here, we propose a strategy to improve microbiome engineering by focusing on microbial establishment and leveraging insights from macrobial ecology. Two general engineering strategies are to manipulate indigenous microbes [4] or to introduce new members [5]. The latter involves the design and delivery of inoculants (a.k.a., probiotics in medical and agricultural arenas) and is a rapidly growing biotechnology sector. In their most general form, both strategies have been practiced crudely for thousands of years in human health [6] and agriculture [7]. However, despite current technical advances, inoculants frequently still fail to establish or confer long-lasting (months to years) modifications to ecosystem function [8]. We argue that this repeated failure is in part driven by lack of emphasis on establishment of inoculants. The problem of organism establishment in recipient ecosystems is not unique to microbiome engineering; it has roots in macrobiology, particularly invasion biology and restoration ecology. We propose that adopting a cross-disciplinary conceptual framework to identify barriers to organism establishment, and then prioritizing these barriers through targeted research will accelerate successful microbiome engineering. In addition, recognizing differences in terminology and experimental design within and across disciplines will facilitate research integration across diverse ecosystems and scales. The components of a more holistic strategy are discussed below.  相似文献

Host-choice experiments were carried out with rodent and bat ectoparasites on Ilha Grande, state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We constructed experimental chambers that enclosed three different rodent or bat host species, and then introduced a selected set of ectoparasitic arthropods. When given the opportunity to choose among host species, the ectoparasites showed a strong tendency to select their primary hosts, and reject novel host species. These kinds of simple experiments can be valuable tools for assessing the ability of ectoparasites to locate and discern differences between host species, and make choices about which hosts to infest, and which hosts to avoid.  相似文献

Phospholipids and triacylglycerols (TAGs) are important classes of lipids in biological systems. Rapid methods have been developed for their characterization in crude samples, including MALDI time-of-flight MS. For mixtures, MALDI often selectively shows only some components. For example, phosphatidylcholine (PC) suppresses detection of other lipids. Most rapid MS methods detect either TAGs or phospholipids but not both. Herein, we demonstrate a simple approach to rapidly screen mixtures containing multiple lipid classes. To validate this approach, reference lipids [PC, tripalmitin (PPP), and phosphatidyl-ethanolamine (PE)] and real samples (beef, egg yolk) were used. In a binary mixture with a strong suppressor (PC), PPP was greatly suppressed. After a simple separation, suppression was virtually eliminated. A mixture of nominally nonsuppressing lipids (PE and PPP) was not adversely affected by separation. Ground beef and egg yolk were used to demonstrate detection of known lipid compositions where other methods have missed one or more lipids or lipid classes. Separation was performed using solid phase extraction with a PrepSep florisil column. A 10 min separation allows rapid screening for lipids and changes in lipids. It is sufficient to clearly detect all lipids and overcome suppression effects in complex lipid mixtures.  相似文献
