AimTo evaluate the resources and techniques used in the irradiation of patients with breast cancer after lumpectomy or mastectomy and the status of implementation of new techniques and therapeutic schedules in our country.BackgroundThe demand for cancer care has increased among the Spanish population, as long as cancer treatment innovations have proliferated. Radiation therapy in breast cancer has evolved exponentially in recent years with the implementation of three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy, intensity modulated radiotherapy, image guided radiotherapy and hypofractionation.Material and MethodsAn original survey questionnaire was sent to institutions participating in the SEOR-Mama group (GEORM). In total, the standards of practice in 969 patients with breast cancer after surgery were evaluated.ResultsThe response rate was 70% (28/40 centers). In 98.5% of cases 3D conformal treatment was used. All the institutions employed CT-based planning treatment. Boost was performed in 56.4% of patients: electrons in 59.8%, photons in 23.7% and HDR brachytherapy in 8.8%. Fractionation was standard in 93.1% of patients. Supine position was the most frequent. Only 3 centers used prone position. The common organs of risk delimited were: homolateral lung (80.8%) and heart (80.8%). In 84% histograms were used. An 80.8% of the centers used isocentric technique. In 62.5% asymmetric fields were employed. CTV was delimited in 46.2%, PTV in 65% and both in 38.5%. A 65% of the centers checked with portal films. IMRT and hypofractionation were used in 1% and in 5.5% respectively.ConclusionIn most of centers, 3D conformal treatment and CT-based planning treatment were used. IMRT and hypofractionation are currently poorly implemented in Spain.  相似文献

When 2 clinical strains of plasmid-mediated penicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus were treated with 1 mM sodium ascorbate for 6 h, 12-35% colony-forming units (CFU) irreversibly lost their ability to produce beta-lactamase. Agarose gel electrophoresis showed the disappearance of the plasmid bands from the lysates of colonies in which susceptibility to penicillin was induced by ascorbate treatment. Since ascorbic acid is a compound that is completely non-toxic, the possibility of its therapeutic use in the treatment of multiresistant bacterial diseases is proposed.  相似文献

According to the acoustic adaptation hypothesis, communication signals are evolutionary shaped in a way that minimizes its degradation and maximizes its contrast against the background noise. To compare the importance for call divergence of acoustic adaptation and hybridization, an evolutionary force allegedly promoting phenotypic variation, we compared the mate recognition signal of two species of poison frogs (Oophaga histrionica and O. lehmanni) at five localities: two (one per species) alongside noisy streams, two away from streams, and one interspecific hybrid. We recorded the calls of 47 males and characterized the microgeographic variation in their spectral and temporal features, measuring ambient noise level, body size, and body temperature as covariates. As predicted, frogs living in noisy habitats uttered high frequency calls and, in one species, were much smaller in size. These results support a previously unconsidered role of noise on streams as a selective force promoting an increase in call frequency and pleiotropic effects in body size. Regarding hybrid frogs, their calls overlapped in the signal space with the calls of one of the parental lineages. Our data support acoustic adaptation following two evolutionary routes but do not support the presumed role of hybridization in promoting phenotypic diversity.  相似文献

Peroxiredoxins (Prxs) play major roles in preventing oxidative damage and their function is consistent with the presence of Prx isoforms in most, if not all, cellular compartments and their expression is dependent on environmental conditions. The aim of this study was to identify and characterize genes encoding Prxs in Vitis vinifera. Quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction (qRT PCR) was used to determine their response to irradiance, heat, and water stress. We identified seven vvprx genes, two of which were especially responsive to water stress, followed by heat stress, but no major changes were observed after high irradiance. The vvprxIIF targeted to mitochondria was the most responsive to water stress and it might be involved in drought tolerance through H2O2 signalling. The vvprxII-2, a putative PrxII, is targeted to the chloroplasts and was the most responsive to heat stress. It might be related with abscisic acid-dependent thermotolerance. Macroautophagy mediates recycling of intracellular material by a multistep pathway, ultimately leading to the fusion of closed double-membrane structures, called autophagosomes, with the lysosome. This event ensures the degradation of the autophagosome content by lysosomal proteases followed by the release of macromolecules by permeases and, thus, it accomplishes the purpose of macroautophagy (hereafter referred to as autophagy). Because fusion of unclosed autophagosomes (i.e., phagophores) with the lysosome would fail to degrade the autophagic cargo, this critical step has to be tightly controlled. Yet, until recently, little was known about the regulation of this event and the factors orchestrating it. A punctum in this issue highlights the recent paper by Noboru Mizushima and his collaborators that answered the question of how premature fusion of phagophores with the lysosome is prevented prior to completion of autophagosome closure.  相似文献

Ecological niche modeling is used to estimate species distributions based on occurrence records and environmental variables, but it seldom includes explicit biotic or historical factors that are important in determining the distribution of species. Expert knowledge can provide additional valuable information regarding ecological or historical attributes of species, but the influence of integrating this information in the modeling process has been poorly explored. Here, we integrated expert knowledge in different stages of the niche modeling process to improve the representation of the actual geographic distributions of Mexican primates (Ateles geoffroyi, Alouatta pigra, and A. palliata mexicana). We designed an elicitation process to acquire information from experts and such information was integrated by an iterative process that consisted of reviews of input data by experts, production of ecological niche models (ENMs), and evaluation of model outputs to provide feedback. We built ENMs using the maximum entropy algorithm along with a dataset of occurrence records gathered from a public source and records provided by the experts. Models without expert knowledge were also built for comparison, and both models, with and without expert knowledge, were evaluated using four validation metrics that provide a measure of accuracy for presence-absence predictions (specificity, sensitivity, kappa, true skill statistic). Integrating expert knowledge to build ENMs produced better results for potential distributions than models without expert knowledge, but a much greater improvement in the transition from potential to realized geographic distributions by reducing overprediction, resulting in better representations of the actual geographic distributions of species. Furthermore, with the combination of niche models and expert knowledge we were able to identify an area of sympatry between A. palliata mexicana and A. pigra. We argue that the inclusion of expert knowledge at different stages in the construction of niche models in an explicit and systematic fashion is a recommended practice as it produces overall positive results for representing realized species distributions.  相似文献

The RT-qPCR has been the method used to analyze gene expression in plants but its benefits have not been completely exploited in the field of plants ecotoxicology when used as molecular biomarkers. The correct use of RT-qPCR demands to establish a certain number of reference genes (RG) which are expected to be invariable in their expression although it does not always happen. The main goals of this work were to: (1) analyze the stability of six potential RG, (2) establish the optimum number of RG, (3) select the most suitable RG to be applied in Bidens laevis under different test conditions and tissues and (4) confirm its convenience by normalizing the expression of one gene of interest under three different challenges. When all data were pooled together, the geNorm algorithm pointed out beta-actin and beta-tubulin (TUB) as the optimal RG pair while NormFinder algorithm selected nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide dehydrogenase (NADHD) and histone 3 (H3) as possessing the most invariable levels of expression. On the other hand, when data were grouped by tissues, ANOVA test selected H3 and TUB, while data grouped by conditions indicated that H3 and NADHD were the most stable RG under this analysis. Therefore, for a general-purpose set of RG, the overall analysis showed that a set of three RG would be optimum, and H3, TUB and NADHD were the selected ones. On the other hand, as RG can vary depending on the tissues or conditions, results achieved with ANOVA would be more reliable. Thus, appropriate normalization process would clearly need more than one RG.  相似文献
