The problematic cemented Devonian brachiopod Schuchertellopsis durbutensis Maillieux, 1939

The Devonian cemented brachiopod Schuchertellopsis durbutensis has proved difficult to classify and its possible taxonomic relationships are unknown. Morphologically Schuchertellopsis resembles more closely members of the Orthotetidina than the Davidsoniidina. Examination of the shell structure, a key diagnostic feature of the Orthotetidina, shows that Schuchertellopsis has the cross laminar secondary shell typical of all orthotetidines. However, the presence of both pseudopunctate and incipient an extropunctate fabric within the ventral valve is unique amongst orthotetidine brachiopods and is thought to represent a phase of shell fabric experimentation. Schuchertellopsis probably fits most comfortably within the Schuchertellidae, and is the earliest representative of that family.     

The carpal tunnel syndrome as a probable primary deficiency of vitamin B6 rather than a deficiency of a dependency state

The mean basal specific activities and the mean % deficiencies of the activity of the glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase of the erythrocytes were identical (n.s.) for a group of eight patients with a severe carpal tunnel syndrome and for a group of eight university students. There was no significant difference in the increases in the specific activities for the patients and the students at 4 concentrations of pyridoxal 5′-phosphate. The apparent K_m for the patients and the students was 95 μM and 61 μM (n.s.) respectively. It is concluded from these data in conjunction with previous findings that the carpal tunnel syndrome is a deficiency disease of vitamin B₆, which is probably primary rather than one of a dependency state.     

Electron Microscopy of Pseudomonas φ6 Bacteriophage

phi6 bacteriophage from Pseudomonas phaseolicola has a pleomorphic shape due to an outer layer of lipid. This layer was removed with organic solvents or sodium dodecyl sulfate revealing a 50-nm cubic particle. The virus was found only in the central portion of the cell and not near the cell wall.     

Pre-exposure affects the olfactory response of Drosophila melanogaster to menthol

A modification of the trap assay (Woodard et al., 1989) was used to evaluate the response of Drosophila melanogaster (Meigen) to food media containing menthol. Dose-response curves for flies to mentholic foods were produced for flies that had been pre-exposed to menthol, during development and adult life, and flies that had not been exposed to menthol before the assay. Mentholic food media were less attractive to Drosophila than plain food medium. Rearing flies on a medium containing menthol reduced their aversion to some concentrations of menthol. The rearing effect was not simply due to lowered general activity levels resulting from developing in a medium containing menthol. There was a threshold concentration of menthol in the rearing medium below which we found no induced behavioural change.     

Crime or affliction? Rape in an African community

Amongst the Gush of southwestern Kenya instances of rape are frequently reported; this was true also in the colonial period and yet it seems that those cases which come to the notice of the authorities are few compared with the numbers which actually occur. While certain features of the traditional culture seem to have encouraged violent sexual assault, because in a patrilocal society miscreants are likely to victimize their relatives, that is women who are sexually taboo, the crime is considered a sacrilegious matter to be dealt with in the family, not by the secular authorities. Given the sacrilegious nature of the act the Gush are convinced that such behavior is involuntary and that the criminal is not a criminal but an afflicted person, motivated by the malevolence of the ancestral spirits or of jealous neighbors and kin. The author uses case material to illustrate various aspects of the Gush belief system in regard to criminal behavior in general and rape in particular.     

Stimulation of anaphylaxis in the mouse footpad by dietary fish oil fatty acids

The effect of fish oil-derived omega-3 (omega-3) fatty acids on anaphylaxis, Arthus and delayed type hypersensitivity reactions in mice has been investigated. Mice on a normal chow diet were fed eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid at a dose of 500 and 333 mg/kg/day, respectively, by a gastric tube over a period of 61 days. Control groups were given water, safflower oil or oleic acid. Anaphylactic and Arthus type reactions were induced in the mouse footpad using bovine serum albumin as an antigen. Carrageenin was utilized to produce a delayed type hypersensitivity reaction. The animals fed omega-3 fatty acids induced a more anaphylactic foodpad reaction. There was no significant effect of the diet on Arthus and delayed type hypersensitivity responses. There was no effect of the fish oil-supplemented diet on production of antibodies to bovine serum albumin. Synthesis of prostaglandin E2 by peritoneal macrophages was significantly inhibited in the animals fed omega-3 fatty acid-enriched fish oil, while leukotriene B4 production was not affected. These results suggest that a diet enriched in omega-3 fatty acids modulates production of arachidonic acid metabolites and this may influence anaphylaxis, but not Arthus and cellular mediated hypersensitivity responses.
