Paraponera clavata workers engage in a period of local search after encountering a small amount of artificial nectar. Giving-up times from local search are not distributed normally; there is a strong skew to longer times. There is no statistically significant relationship between the amount of time required to collect the food and the subsequent search time. Giving-up time in response to the first reward presented to an ant is positively correlated with that ant's response to a second such reward. However, giving-up times diminish when an ant is presented with a series of rewards. Local search is a function of individual strategies, which remain relatively constant in the short term. 相似文献

Deterministic models of mutation and selection in the space of (binary) nucleotide-type sequences have been investigated
for haploid populations during the past 25 years, and, recently, for diploid populations as well. These models, in particular
their ‘error thresholds’, have mainly been analyzed by numerical methods and perturbation techniques. We consider them here
by means of bifurcation theory, which improves our understanding of both equilibrium and dynamical properties.
In a caricature obtained from the original model by neglecting back mutation to the favourable allele, the familiar error
threshold of the haploid two-class model turns out to be a simple transcritical bifurcation, whereas its diploid counterpart
exhibits an additional saddle node. This corresponds to a second error threshold. Three-class models with neutral spaces of
unequal size introduce further features. Such are a global bifurcation in haploid populations, and simple examples of Hopf
bifurcations (as predicted by Akin’s theorem) in the diploid case.

Site-directed mutagenesis was used to investigate the functions of the traM gene in plasmid R1-mediated bacterial conjugation. Three mutant alleles, a null mutation, a sense mutation and a stop mutation, were recombined back into the R1-16 plasmid, a transfer-derepressed ( finO − ) variant of plasmid R1. The frequency of conjugative transfer of the traM null mutant derivative of R1-16 was 107 -fold lower than that of the isogenic parent plasmid, showing the absolute requirement for this gene in conjugative transfer of plasmid R1. Measurements of the abundance of plasmid specified traJ , traA and traM mRNAs, TraM protein levels, and complementation studies indicated that the traM gene of plasmid R1 has at least two functions in conjugation: (i) positive control of transfer gene expression; and (ii) a function in a process distinct from gene expression. Since expression of the negatively autoregulated traM gene is itself affected positively by the expression of the transfer operon genes, this gene constitutes a decisive element within a regulatory circuit that co-ordinates expression of the genes necessary for horizontal DNA transfer. Based on our studies, we present a novel model for the regulation of the transfer genes of plasmid R1 that might also be applicable to other IncF plasmids. 相似文献

Dung beetles are extensively used as a focal taxon in tropical forests. Yet, information for most of their ecological functions comes from other systems. We present results from a field experiment in a tropical rain forest showing that dung beetle activity increases foliar phosphorus concentration in seedlings of the tree Brosimum lactescens. Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a disease characterized by progressive, unrelenting lung scarring, with death from respiratory failure within 2–4 years unless lung transplantation is performed. New effective therapies are clearly needed. Fibroblast activation protein (FAP) is a cell surface-associated serine protease up-regulated in the lungs of patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis as well as in wound healing and cancer. We postulate that FAP is not only a marker of disease but influences the development of pulmonary fibrosis after lung injury. In two different models of pulmonary fibrosis, intratracheal bleomycin instillation and thoracic irradiation, we find increased mortality and increased lung fibrosis in FAP-deficient mice compared with wild-type mice. Lung extracellular matrix analysis reveals accumulation of intermediate-sized collagen fragments in FAP-deficient mouse lungs, consistent with in vitro studies showing that FAP mediates ordered proteolytic processing of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-derived collagen cleavage products. FAP-mediated collagen processing leads to increased collagen internalization without altering expression of the endocytic collagen receptor, Endo180. Pharmacologic FAP inhibition decreases collagen internalization as expected. Conversely, restoration of FAP expression in the lungs of FAP-deficient mice decreases lung hydroxyproline content after intratracheal bleomycin to levels comparable with that of wild-type controls. Our findings indicate that FAP participates directly, in concert with MMPs, in collagen catabolism and clearance and is an important factor in resolving scar after injury and restoring lung homeostasis. Our study identifies FAP as a novel endogenous regulator of fibrosis and is the first to show FAP''s protective effects in the lung. 相似文献

Genetic leukoencephalopathies (gLEs) are a group of heterogeneous disorders with white matter abnormalities affecting the central nervous system (CNS). The causative mutation in ~50% of gLEs is unknown. Using whole exome sequencing (WES), we identified homozygosity for a missense variant, VPS11: c.2536T>G (p.C846G), as the genetic cause of a leukoencephalopathy syndrome in five individuals from three unrelated Ashkenazi Jewish (AJ) families. All five patients exhibited highly concordant disease progression characterized by infantile onset leukoencephalopathy with brain white matter abnormalities, severe motor impairment, cortical blindness, intellectual disability, and seizures. The carrier frequency of the VPS11: c.2536T>G variant is 1:250 in the AJ population (n = 2,026). VPS11 protein is a core component of HOPS (homotypic fusion and protein sorting) and CORVET (class C core vacuole/endosome tethering) protein complexes involved in membrane trafficking and fusion of the lysosomes and endosomes. The cysteine 846 resides in an evolutionarily conserved cysteine-rich RING-H2 domain in carboxyl terminal regions of VPS11 proteins. Our data shows that the C846G mutation causes aberrant ubiquitination and accelerated turnover of VPS11 protein as well as compromised VPS11-VPS18 complex assembly, suggesting a loss of function in the mutant protein. Reduced VPS11 expression leads to an impaired autophagic activity in human cells. Importantly, zebrafish harboring a vps11 mutation with truncated RING-H2 domain demonstrated a significant reduction in CNS myelination following extensive neuronal death in the hindbrain and midbrain. Thus, our study reveals a defect in VPS11 as the underlying etiology for an autosomal recessive leukoencephalopathy disorder associated with a dysfunctional autophagy-lysosome trafficking pathway. 相似文献

Lianas are abundant in seasonal tropical forests, where they avoid seasonal water stress presumably by accessing deep‐soil water reserves. Although lianas are favoured in seasonal environments, their occurrence and abundance are low in semiarid environments. We hypothesized that lianas do not tolerate the great water shortage in the soil and air characteristic of semiarid environments, which would increase the risk of embolism. We compared the rooting depth of coarse roots, leaf dynamics, leaf water potential (ψleaf), embolism resistance (P50) and lethal levels of embolism (P88) between congeneric lianas that occur with different abundances in two semiarid sites differing in soil characteristics and vapour pressure deficit in the air (VPDair). Regardless of soil texture and depth, water availability was restricted to the rainy season. All liana species were drought deciduous and had superficial coarse roots (not deeper than 35 cm). P50 varied from ?1.8 to ?2.49 MPa, and all species operated under narrow safety margins against catastrophic (P50) and irreversible hydraulic failure (P88), even during the rainy season. In short, lianas that occur in semiarid environments have lower resistance to cavitation and limit carbon fixation to the rainy season because of leaf fall in the early dry season. We suggest that leaf shedding and shallow roots impairing carbon gain and growth in the dry season may explain why liana abundance is lower in semiarid than in other seasonally dry environments. 相似文献
