Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological problems affecting approximately 1% of the world's population with higher incidence among elderly individuals. Although depression is a common comorbid condition in patients with epilepsy, there is a paucity of information regarding depression in geriatric patients with epilepsy. This study analysed a group of 83 patients affected by different epilepsy phenotypes accompanied by mental disorders, especially depression. Antiepileptic and antipsychotic drug treatment has been evaluated, particularly a positive effect of the new antiepileptics (monotherapy and polytherapy) both on the reduction of seizures and mental disorders.  相似文献

The selection of antipsychotics as medications used primarily for treating schizophrenia and disorders similar to schizophrenia is an important aspect of the treatment of forensicpatients. This study examines the effect of antipsychotics selection (typical or atipycal) on the level of aggressiveness, side effects and the hospitalisation length. The research is conducted on 98 psychiatric patients diagnosed with schizophrenia or similar disorders (F 20-F 29) in two forensic psychiatric institutions. The patients committed aggressive criminal offence in state of insanity. The patients are currently treated in inpatient psychiatric institutions. The research was conducted by using the Aggressiveness Questionnaire (AG-87), the Simpson-Angus Scale for the assessment of extrapyramidal side effects, the Barnes Akathisia Rating Scale for the assesment of akathisia and the Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale. The results show no significant difference between the groups of patients treated with typical and atypical antipsychotics in all the variables.  相似文献

Mixed-species assemblages are often unintentionally introduced into new ecosystems. Analysing how assemblage structure varies during transport may provide insights into how introduction risk changes before propagules are released. Characterization of introduction risk is typically based on assessments of colonization pressure (CP, the number of species transported) and total propagule pressure (total PP, the total abundance of propagules released) associated with an invasion vector. Generally, invasion potential following introduction increases with greater CP or total PP. Here, we extend these assessments using rank-abundance distributions to examine how CP : total PP relationships change temporally in ballast water of ocean-going ships. Rank-abundance distributions and CP : total PP patterns varied widely between trans-Atlantic and trans-Pacific voyages, with the latter appearing to pose a much lower risk than the former. Responses also differed by taxonomic group, with invertebrates experiencing losses mainly in total PP, while diatoms and dinoflagellates sustained losses mainly in CP. In certain cases, open-ocean ballast water exchange appeared to increase introduction risk by uptake of new species or supplementation of existing ones. Our study demonstrates that rank-abundance distributions provide new insights into the utility of CP and PP in characterizing introduction risk.  相似文献

PISC-2002 was purified by anion-exchange chromatography, and RP-HPLC analysis. PISC-2002 had a molecular mass of 11.2 kDa and a high content of hydrophobic amino acids and proline. N-terminal sequence gave two sequences differing by one residue. The main sequence is ASLPAVSALVLTV and the shorter sequence is SLPAVSALVLTV. This shows its homology to Streptomyces subtilisin inhibitor family. Besides its large spectrum of powerful inhibitory activities against various serine proteases, PISC-2002 displayed significant antiviral effect against influenza virus A/Rostock/34 (H7N7).  相似文献

Both cellular iron deficiency and excess have adverse consequences. To maintain iron homeostasis, complex mechanisms have evolved to regulate cellular and extracellular iron concentrations. Extracellular iron concentrations are controlled by a peptide hormone hepcidin, which inhibits the supply of iron into plasma. Hepcidin acts by binding to and inducing the degradation of the cellular iron exporter, ferroportin, found in sites of major iron flows: duodenal enterocytes involved in iron absorption, macrophages that recycle iron from senescent erythrocytes, and hepatocytes that store iron. Hepcidin synthesis is in turn controlled by iron concentrations, hypoxia, anemia and inflammatory cytokines. The molecular mechanisms that regulate hepcidin production are only beginning to be understood, but its dysregulation is involved in the pathogenesis of a spectrum of iron disorders. Deficiency of hepcidin is the unifying cause of hereditary hemochromatoses, and excessive cytokine-stimulated hepcidin production causes hypoferremia and contributes to anemia of inflammation.  相似文献

The aim of the study was investigation of specific forensic aspects in offenders involved in domestic homicide cases in regard to sociodemographic and psychosocial variables and modalities of the offense. The research was conducted at the Department of Forensic Psychiatry in Neuropsychiatric Hospital "Dr. Ivan Barbot" in Popovaca, Croatia. The sample in this study consisted of domestic homicide group (N = 162). The results showed certain characteristics within the group of domestic homicide offenders. Generally speaking the offenders in domestic homicide cases were often married and were living in their families. Moreover, they were brought up in families with both parents and they had history of regular military service. Furthermore, offenders in domestic homicide cases were less involved in intervention from social services with rare history of home runaway and substance abuse during adolescence. Finally, the same group of offenders was less often had mothers or close friends with antisocial personality disorder but had frequent language and speech problems during adolescent period. In regard to the victims of domestic homicide they were often aged females. The offenders usually commit crime in their living space, either in the house or in the apartment. Based on these findings we conclude there are certain specific characteristics in the domestic homicide cases compared to homicide in general.  相似文献

Studied is the effect of the non-ionic surfactant Tween 80 on the microbial transformation of 4-androstene-3,17-dione into its 9α-hydroxy-derivative by resting Rhodococcus sp. cells. The surfactant was applied in the cultivation medium as an additional source of carbon, in the transformation reaction medium as a mediator of the steroid substrate solubility or was used for permeabilization of the glucose grown Rhodococcus sp. cells. Special attention is paid to the fact that Tween 80 accelerates the 9α-steroid hydroxylation reaction carried out by glucose-grown cells. When the surfactant was applied as a supplementary source of carbon, the rate of the steroid hydroxylation reaction was significantly lower. In addition, the kinetics of the transformation process changed into a linear one thus indicating a very slow, if any, product degradation. The fatty acid profile, cell surface hydrophobicity as well as cell ultrastructure observed by scanning and transmission electron microscopy in the Tween 80- and glucose-grown Rhodococcus sp. cells are compared and related with their 9α-hydroxylating activity.  相似文献

Excess adiposity is associated with low‐grade inflammation and decreased iron status. Iron depletion in obesity is thought to be mediated by an inflammation‐induced increase in the body's main regulator of iron homeostasis, hepcidin. Elevated hepcidin can result in iron depletion as it prevents the release of dietary iron absorbed into the enterocytes, limiting replenishment of body iron losses. Weight reduction is associated with decreased inflammation; however, the impact of reduced inflammation on iron status and systemic hepcidin in obese individuals remains unknown. We determined prospectively the impact of weight loss on iron status parameters, serum hepcidin, inflammation, and dietary iron in 20 obese premenopausal females 6 months after restrictive bariatric surgery. At baseline, the presence of iron depletion was high with 45% of the women having serum transferrin receptor (sTfR) >28.1 nmol/l. Differences between baseline and 6 months after surgery for BMI (47.56 vs. 39.55 kg/m2; P < 0.0001), C‐reactive protein (CRP) (10.83 vs. 5.71 mg/l; P < 0.0001), sTfR (29.97 vs. 23.08 nmol/l; P = 0.001), and serum hepcidin (111.25 vs. 31.35 ng/ml; P < 0.0001) were significantly lower, whereas hemoglobin (Hb) (12.10 vs. 13.30 g/dl; P < 0.0001) and hematocrit (Hct) (36.58 vs. 38.78%; P = 0.001) were significantly higher. Ferritin and transferrin saturation (Tsat) showed minimal improvement at follow‐up. At baseline, hepcidin was not correlated with sTfR (r = 0.02); however, at follow‐up, significant correlations were found (r = ?0.58). Change in interleukin‐6 (IL‐6) from baseline was marginally associated with decreased log serum hepcidin (Δ IL‐6: β = ?0.22; P = 0.15), whereas change in BMI or weight was not. No significant difference in dietary iron was noted after surgery. Weight loss in obese premenopausal women is associated with reduced serum hepcidin and inflammation. Reduction in inflammation and hepcidin likely allow for enhanced dietary iron absorption resulting in an improved functional iron profile.  相似文献
