The water buffalo is vital to the lives of small farmers and to the economy of many countries worldwide. Not only are they draught animals, but they are also a source of meat, horns, skin and particularly the rich and precious milk that may be converted to creams, butter, yogurt and many cheeses. Genome analysis of water buffalo has advanced significantly in recent years. This review focuses on currently available genome resources in water buffalo in terms of cytogenetic characterization, whole genome mapping and next generation sequencing. No doubt, these resources indicate that genome science comes of age in the species and will provide knowledge and technologies to help optimize production potential, reproduction efficiency, product quality, nutritional value and resistance to diseases. As water buffalo and domestic cattle, both members of the Bovidae family, are closely related, the vast amount of cattle genetic/genomic resources might serve as shortcuts for the buffalo community to further advance genome science and biotechnologies in the species.  相似文献

Experimental studies performed on 227 rats showed that Zn-aspartate and Zn-glycinate administered ip lowered the incidence, number, and severity of the reserpine-induced gastric lesions ensuring significant protection indices. Histochemical methods revealed increased amount of mucosal glycoproteins. The activity of dehydrogenases involved in energy metabolism that modulates acid secretion in the parietal cells was depressed. RNA content in the chief cells as premises of pepsinogen synthesis, was decreased. ATPase reaction in the periglandular capillaries was uniform and stronger, showing an improvement of gastric mucosal microcirculation. Since these histochemical changes were also noted in healthy rats receiving Zn salts, it might be suggested that they are not the mere expression of an anti-ulcer protective effect of zinc, but rather reflect its mechanism of action, relating to the complex metabolic events induced by the trace element. Our results are in agreement with those previously reported concerning the noxious influence of Zn depletion, the accelerated healing of peptic ulcer patients after Zn treatment, and the protective effect of Zn against ulcerogenesis in several experimental models involving different pathomechanisms.  相似文献

Inappropriate thyrotropin secretion (IST) may originate from either neoplastic disease (nIST) or non-neoplastic resistance to thyroid hormone (nnIST). An inhibitory effect of somatostatin on TSH secretion has been documented. In an attempt to elucidate the possible therapeutic effect of this peptide on nIST and nnIST, a study was conducted in 7 such patients. Sandostatin (SMS 201-995) was administered in daily doses of 100 micrograms for several days to 1 month. Four patients with nIST responded with a fall in circulating TSH as well as alpha-subunit with concomitant normalization of free thyroxine and clear symptomatic improvement. In the 3 nnIST patients this effect was considerably less apparent and a partial TSH escape was observed on long-term treatment in 2 cases. The importance of somatostatin and its analogs in the management of thyroid malignancy is stressed.  相似文献
