Parental care is a defining feature of animal breeding systems. We now know that both basic life-history characteristics and ecological factors influence the evolution of care. However, relatively little is known about how these factors interact to influence the origin and maintenance of care. Here, we expand upon previous work and explore the relationship between basic life-history characteristics (stage-specific rates of mortality and maturation) and the fitness benefits associated with the origin and the maintenance of parental care for two broad ecological scenarios: the scenario in which egg survival is density dependent and the case in which adult survival is density dependent. Our findings suggest that high offspring need is likely critical in driving the origin, but not the maintenance, of parental care regardless of whether density dependence acts on egg or adult survival. In general, parental care is more likely to result in greater fitness benefits when baseline adult mortality is low if 1) egg survival is density dependent or 2) adult mortality is density dependent and mutant density is relatively high. When density dependence acts on egg mortality, low rates of egg maturation and high egg densities are less likely to lead to strong fitness benefits of care. However, when density dependence acts on adult mortality, high levels of egg maturation and increasing adult densities are less likely to maintain care. Juvenile survival has relatively little, if any, effect on the origin and maintenance of egg-only care. More generally, our results suggest that the evolution of parental care will be influenced by an organism’s entire life history characteristics, the stage at which density dependence acts, and whether care is originating or being maintained.  相似文献

Lens opacity 11 (lop11) is an autosomal recessive mouse cataract mutation that arose spontaneously in the RIIIS/J strain. At 3 weeks of age mice exhibit total cataracts with vacuoles. The lop11 locus was mapped to mouse chromosome 8. Analysis of the mouse genome for the lop11 critical region identified Hsf4 as a candidate gene. Molecular evaluation of Hsf4 revealed an early transposable element (ETn) in intron 9 inserted 61 bp upstream of the intron/exon junction. The same mutation was also identified in a previously mapped cataract mutant, ldis1. The ETn insertion altered splicing and expression of the Hsf4 gene, resulting in the truncated Hsf4 protein. In humans, mutations in HSF4 have been associated with both autosomal dominant and recessive cataracts. The lop11 mouse is an excellent resource for evaluating the role of Hsf4 in transparency of the lens.  相似文献

Several studies have shown that bursting neurons can encode information in the number of spikes per burst: As the stimulus varies, so does the length of individual bursts.Therepresented stimuli, however, vary substantially among different sensory modalities and different neurons. The goal of this paper is to determine which kind of stimulus features can be encoded in burst length, and how those features depend on the mathematical properties of the underlying dynamical system. We show that the initiation and termination of each burst is triggered by specific stimulus features whose temporal characteristsics are determined by the types of bifurcations that initiate and terminate firing in each burst. As only a few bifurcations are possible, only a restricted number of encoded features exists. Here we focus specifically on describing parabolic, square-wave and elliptic bursters. We find that parabolic bursters, whose firing is initiated and terminated by saddle-node bifurcations, behave as prototypical integrators: Firing is triggered by depolarizing stimuli, and lasts for as long as excitation is prolonged. Elliptic bursters, contrastingly, constitute prototypical resonators, since both the initiating and terminating bifurcations possess well-defined oscillation time scales. Firing is therefore triggered by stimulus stretches of matching frequency and terminated by a phase-inversion in the oscillation. The behavior of square-wave bursters is somewhat intermediate, since they are triggered by a fold bifurcation of cycles of well-defined frequency but are terminated by a homoclinic bifurcation lacking an oscillating time scale. These correspondences show that stimulus selectivity is determined by the type of bifurcations. By testing several neuron models, we also demonstrate that additional biological properties that do not modify the bifurcation structure play a minor role in stimulus encoding. Moreover, we show that burst-length variability (and thereby, the capacity to transmit information) depends on a trade-off between the variance of the external signal driving the cell and the strength of the slow internal currents modulating bursts. Thus, our work explicitly links the computational properties of bursting neurons to the mathematical properties of the underlying dynamical systems.  相似文献

Desmoplakin is a cytoplasmic desmosomal protein that plays a vital role in normal intercellular adhesion. Mutations in desmoplakin can result in devastating skin blistering diseases and arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy, a heart muscle disorder associated with ventricular arrhythmias, heart failure, and sudden death. The desmoplakin N-terminal region is a 1056-amino-acid sequence of unknown structure. It mediates interactions with other desmosomal proteins, is found in a variety of plakin proteins, and spans what has been termed the “plakin domain,” which includes residues 180-1022 and consists of six spectrin repeats (SRs) and an Src homology 3 domain. Herein we elucidate the architecture of desmoplakin's plakin domain, as well as its constituent tandem SRs. Small-angle X-ray scattering analysis shows that the entire plakin domain has an “L” shape, with a long arm and a short arm held at a perpendicular angle. The long arm is 24.0 nm long and accommodates four stably folded SRs arranged in tandem. In contrast, the short arm is 17.9 nm in length and accommodates two independently folded repeats and an extended C-terminus. We show that mutations linked to arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (K470E and R808C) cause local conformational alterations, while the overall folded structure is maintained. This provides the first structural and mechanistic insights into an entire plakin domain and provides a basis for understanding the critical role of desmoplakin in desmosome function.  相似文献

Bacterial gut symbiont communities are critical for the health of many insect species. However, little is known about how microbial communities vary among host species or how they respond to anthropogenic disturbances. Bacterial communities that differ in richness or composition may vary in their ability to provide nutrients or defenses. We used deep sequencing to investigate gut microbiota of three species in the genus Bombus (bumble bees). Bombus are among the most economically and ecologically important non-managed pollinators. Some species have experienced dramatic declines, probably due to pathogens and land-use change. We examined variation within and across bee species and between semi-natural and conventional agricultural habitats. We categorized as ‘core bacteria'' any operational taxonomic units (OTUs) with closest hits to sequences previously found exclusively or primarily in the guts of honey bees and bumble bees (genera Apis and Bombus). Microbial community composition differed among bee species. Richness, defined as number of bacterial OTUs, was highest for B. bimaculatus and B. impatiens. For B. bimaculatus, this was due to high richness of non-core bacteria. We found little effect of habitat on microbial communities. Richness of non-core bacteria was negatively associated with bacterial abundance in individual bees, possibly due to deeper sampling of non-core bacteria in bees with low populations of core bacteria. Infection by the gut parasite Crithidia was negatively associated with abundance of the core bacterium Gilliamella and positively associated with richness of non-core bacteria. Our results indicate that Bombus species have distinctive gut communities, and community-level variation is associated with pathogen infection.  相似文献

Ecological speciation through host‐shift has been proposed as a major route for the appearance of novel fungal pathogens. The growing awareness of their negative impact on global economies and public health created an enormous interest in identifying the factors that are most likely to promote their emergence in nature. In this work, a combination of pathological, molecular and geographical data was used to investigate the recent emergence of the fungus Colletotrichum kahawae. C. kahawae emerged as a specialist pathogen causing coffee berry disease in Coffea arabica, owing to its unparalleled adaptation of infecting green coffee berries. Contrary to current hypotheses, our results suggest that a recent host‐jump underlay the speciation of C. kahawae from a generalist group of fungi seemingly harmless to coffee berries. We posit that immigrant inviability and a predominantly asexual behaviour could have been instrumental in driving speciation by creating pleiotropic interactions between local adaptation and reproductive patterns. Moreover, we estimate that C. kahawae began its diversification at <2200 bp leaving a very short time frame since the divergence from its sibling lineage (c. 5600 bp ), during which a severe drop in C. kahawae’s effective population size occurred. This further supports a scenario of recent introduction and subsequent adaptation to C. arabica. Phylogeographical data revealed low levels of genetic polymorphism but provided the first geographically consistent population structure of C. kahawae, inferring the Angolan population as the most ancestral and the East African populations as the most recently derived. Altogether, these results highlight the significant role of host specialization and asexuality in the emergence of fungal pathogens through ecological speciation.  相似文献

Studies of the immunological environment in the female genital tract (FGT) are critical for the development of vaccines or microbicides to halt the spread of sexually transmitted infections. Challenges arise due to the difficulties of sampling from this site, and the majority of studies have been conducted utilising peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Identifying functional differences between immune cells of the FGT and peripheral blood would aid in our understanding of mucosal immunology. We compared the gene expression profile of mononuclear cells at these two sites. Messenger RNA expression analysis was performed using gene expression arrays on matched cervical mononuclear cells and peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Further cellular phenotyping was done by 10 colour flow cytometry. Of the 22,185 genes expressed by these samples, 5345 genes were significantly differentially expressed between the cell populations. Most differences can be explained by significantly lower levels of T and B cells and higher levels of macrophages and dendritic cells in the FGT compared with peripheral blood. Several immunologically relevant pathways such as apoptosis and innate immune signalling, and a variety of cytokines and cytokine receptors were differentially expressed. This study highlights the importance of the unique immunological environment of the FGT and identifies important differences between systemic and mucosal immune compartments.  相似文献

The effects of small-scale turbulence on two species of dinoflagellates were examined in cultures where the turbulent forces came randomly from all directions and were intermittent both spatially and temporally; much like small-scale turbulence in the ocean. With Lingulodinium polyedrum (Stein) Dodge (syn. Gonyaulax polyedra), division rate increased linearly (from 0.35 to 0.5 per day) and the mean cross-sectional area (CSA) decreased linearly (from 1100 to 750 μm2) as a function of the logarithmic increase in turbulence energy dissipation rate (). These effects were noted when values increased between 10−8 and 10−4 m2 s−3. However, when increased to 10−3 m2 s−3, division rate sharply decreased and mean CSA increased. Over the same range of , Alexandrium catenella (Wheedon and Kofoid) Balech had its division rate decrease linearly (from 0.6 to 0.45 per day) and its CSA increase linearly (from 560 to 650 μm2) as a function of the logarithmic increase in . Even at the highest examined (10−3 m2 s−3), which may be unrealistically high for their ambits, both L. polyedra and A. catenella still had fairly high division rates, 0.2 and 0.45 per day, respectively. Turbulence strongly affected chain formation in A. catenella. In non-turbulent cultures, the mode was single cells (80–90% of the population), but at of 10−5 to 10−4 m2 s−3, the mode was 8 cells per chain. At the highest (10−3 m2 s−3), the mode decreased to 4 cells per chain. The vertical distributions of A. catenella populations in relation to hydrographic flow fields were studied in the summers of 1997 and 1998 in East Sound, Washington, USA (latitude 48°39′N, 122°53′W). In both summers, high concentrations of A. catenella were found as a subsurface bloom in a narrow depth interval (2 m), where both current shear and turbulence intensity were at a minimum. Other researchers have shown that A. catenella orients its swimming in shear flows, and that swimming speed increases with chain length. These responses, when combined with our observations, support a hypothesis that A. catenella actively concentrates at depths with low turbulence and shear.  相似文献

In an effort to expand the technology of bioremediation of hydrophobic organic compounds, microencapsulation technology was investigated as a method of biosurfactant delivery to contaminated sites. Microparticles are composed of active or inactive materials encapsulated in a polymer coating designed for controlled release of the encapsulated substance. Surface morphology and release profiles of microparticles containing rhamnolipid biosurfactant were investigated for development of a controlled release bioremediation scheme. The evaluation was conducted under laboratory conditions with 45 mg/ml concentration of biosurfactant and a representative environmental medium; using artificial salt water (35 ppt) and deionized water medium as a control. The microparticles were prepared by the water–in–oil–in–water double emulsion solvent evaporation method. The surface morphology was examined after initial preparation, at 0, 15 and 31 days incubation, using light microscopy. Light microscopic images revealed smooth, spherical microparticles that degraded over time in the media. Results indicated that microparticle degradation occurred mostly in the salt water environment, suggesting that the presence of salts (Na+ and Cl? ions) in the water enhanced microparticle degradation. The deionized water environment achieved polymeric degradation that was similar to what was generally reported in the literature. Biosurfactant release was evaluated for polymer molecular weights (Mw) 40, 80, and 200 kDa, in salt water and deionized water media, each of which showed a high initial burst release of biosurfactant, followed by pulse releases that occurred over the 31 day period. The highest level of biosurfactant release of all the molecular weights tested occurred in the Mw 80 kDa. The release from Mw 40 kDa and Mw 200 kDa was not significantly different (P > 0.05). The results showed that this technology may be useful for enhancing bioremediation of residual hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOC) in estuarine and marine environments.  相似文献
