1.?Biological communities are organized in complex interaction networks such as food webs, which topology appears to be non-random. Gradients, compartments, nested subsets and even combinations of these structures have been shown in bipartite networks. However, in most studies only one pattern is tested against randomness and mechanistic hypotheses are generally lacking. 2.?Here we examined the topology of regional, coexisting plant-herbivore and host-parasitoid food webs to discriminate between the mentioned network patterns. We also evaluated the role of species body size, local abundance, regional frequency and phylogeny as determinants of network topology. 3.?We found both food webs to be compartmented, with interaction range boundaries imposed by host phylogeny. Species degree within compartments was mostly related to their regional frequency and local abundance. Only one compartment showed an internal nested structure in the distribution of interactions between species, but species position within this compartment was unrelated to species size or abundance. 4.?These results suggest that compartmentalization may be more common than previously considered, and that network structure is a result of multiple, hierarchical, non-exclusive processes. 相似文献

The relationship between preference and performance is crucial to the ecology and evolution of plant-insect interactions. Oviposition preference and offspring performance were evaluated for a citrus pest, the leafminer Phyllocnistis citrella (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae), on three of its host plants: lemon (Citrus limon L. Burm.), orange (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck), and grapefruit (Citrus paradisi Macfadyen) in Tucumán province (northwest Argentina). Choice and no-choice tests were performed in open and enclosed environments, and performance parameters (development time, survival, pupal size, and sex ratio) were estimated from laboratory rearing and 3-yr field sampling data. Parasitism rates were studied in laboratory choice test and field assessments. Preference trends were inconsistent, with lemon receiving more eggs in some tests, whereas no preference was observed in others. Patterns of host use in the field did not show significant differences among species. Leafminer performance, including parasitism and predation rates, was generally homogeneous among host plants. From these results, lemon, orange, and grapefruit seem to represent intrinsically similar resources for P. citrella populations in northwest Argentina, a trend that was accompanied by a lack of consistent oviposition preferences in foraging females. Ecological conditions might be more important than physiological adaptation in shaping a probably labile host ranking in this pest species. 相似文献

Two hundred and four rabbits from 8 Macaronesian islands (Pico, San Jorge, San Miguel, Terceira, and Flores from Azores Archipelago; Tenerife and Alegranza from Canary Islands; and Madeira from Madeira Archipelago) were examined for helminth parasites between 1995 and 2000. Three species of cestodes, Taenia pisiformis (larvae), Andrya cuniculi, and Mosgovoyia ctenoides, and 5 species of nematodes, Trichuris leporis, Graphidium strigosum, Trichostrongylus retortaeformis, Passalurus ambiguus, and Dermatoxys hispaniensis, were identified. Only 3 species (M. ctenoides, T. retortaeformis, and P. ambiguus) were regularly distributed over the 3 archipelagos. Taenia pisiformis was not collected in Madeira, nor was A. cuniculi in the Azores and G. strigosum in the Canary Islands. Trichuris leporis and D. hispaniensis were only found in Madeira. Significant differences in the general prevalence of the nematodes G. strigosum and T. retortaeformis were detected between Azores and Madeira. The prevalence of T. retortaeformis differs significantly between the Azores and the Canaries and that of P. ambiguus was higher in Madeira than in Azores and Canaries. The helminth richness found in the wild rabbit in these Macaronesian archipelagos was very low compared with the Palearctic helminth fauna of this host. The wild rabbit was introduced from the Iberian Peninsula into different Macaronesian islands. Helminths introduced with Oryctolagus cuniculus into these islands also are commonly found in Iberian wild rabbits, which are excellent colonizers, as demonstrated in this study. 相似文献

Background and aims
The occurrence of drought-induced forest die-off events is projected to increase in the future, but we still lack complete understanding of its impact on plant-soil interactions, soil microbial diversity and function. We investigated the effects of holm oak (Quercus ilex) decline (HOD) on soil microbial community and functioning, and how these effects relate to changes in the herbaceous community.Methods
We selected 30 holm oak trees with different defoliation degrees (healthy, affected and dead) and analyzed soil samples collected under the canopy (holm oak ecotype) and out of the influence (grassland ecotype) of each tree.Results
HOD increased potential nitrogen (N) mineralization and decreased inorganic N concentrations. These results could be partially explained by changes in the herbaceous composition, an increased herbaceous abundance and changes in soil microbial functional diversity and structure, with HOD favoring bacteria against fungi. Moreover, herbaceous abundance and microbial functional diversity of holm oak and grassland ecotypes converged with HOD.Conclusions
Our results show that HOD triggers a cascade effect on plant understory and soil microbial communities, as well as a plant succession (savannization) process, where understory species colonize the gaps left by dead holm oaks, with important implications for ecosystem C and N budgets.105.

Ecological limits to phenotypic plasticity (PP), induced by simultaneous biotic and abiotic factors, can prevent organisms from exhibiting optimal plasticity, and in turn lead to decreased fitness. Herbivory is an important biotic stressor and may limit plant functional responses to challenging environmental conditions such as shading. In this study we investigated whether plant functional responses and PP to shade are constrained by herbivory, and whether such constraints are due to direct effects based on resource limitation by considering ontogeny. We used as a model system the relict tree Prunus lusitanica and implemented an indoor experiment to quantify the response of saplings of different ages to shade and herbivory. We measured five functional traits and quantitatively calculated PP. Results showed that herbivory did not constrain functional responses or PP to shade except for shoot:root ratio (SR), which, despite showing a high PP in damaged saplings, decreased under shade instead of increasing. Damaged saplings of older age did not exhibit reduced constraints on functional responses to shade and generally presented a lower PP than damaged saplings of younger age. Our findings suggest that herbivory‐mediated constraints on plant plasticity to shade may not be as widespread as previously thought. Nonetheless, the negative effect of herbivory on SR plastic expression to shade could be detrimental for plant fitness. Finally, our results suggest a secondary role of direct effects (resource‐based) on P. lusitanica plasticity limitation. ? Plant light interception efficiency is a crucial determinant of carbon uptake by individual plants and by vegetation. Our aim was to identify whole-plant variables that summarize complex crown architecture, which can be used to predict light interception efficiency. ? We gathered the largest database of digitized plants to date (1831 plants of 124 species), and estimated a measure of light interception efficiency with a detailed three-dimensional model. Light interception efficiency was defined as the ratio of the hemispherically averaged displayed to total leaf area. A simple model was developed that uses only two variables, crown density (the ratio of leaf area to total crown surface area) and leaf dispersion (a measure of the degree of aggregation of leaves). ? The model explained 85% of variation in the observed light interception efficiency across the digitized plants. Both whole-plant variables varied across species, with differences in leaf dispersion related to leaf size. Within species, light interception efficiency decreased with total leaf number. This was a result of changes in leaf dispersion, while crown density remained constant. ? Random amplified polymorphism DNA (RAPD) is a useful tool for species identification. The obtained band patterns can be used for specific primer pair design that may be useful for species diagnosis. In this study, a distinctive a 962-bp band in A. polyphaga band patterns was found, by using the OPC20 primer (ACTTCGCCAC). The DNA fragment was used to design a specific primer pair that was useful for the identification of different isolates as A. polyphaga species. In previous reports we have demonstrated high plasma levels of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) in asymptomatic alcoholic men. In the present work the physicochemical properties of SHBG from plasma of noncirrhotic alcoholic patients have been further compared with SHBG of control subjects. Steroid binding to SHBG was similar for the two groups: alcoholic men, K(d) of 0.62 +/- 0.07 nM and control individuals, K(d) of 0.70 +/- 0.10 nM. The structure of oligosaccharides attached to SHBG from controls and alcoholic men were determined by using serial chromatography. Our data indicated that 7% of SHBG of control individuals was not retarded by the Con-A column, whereas approximately 30% of SHBG of alcoholic men eluted in the void volume of Con A. Approximately 46% of SHBG of alcoholics applied to Con A, possessed biantennary complex oligosaccharides, as indicated by the fact that it could be eluted with methyl-alpha-D-glucopyranoside and by its retention on wheat germ agglutinin; in contrast, when SHBG from control men was analyzed, approximately 51% was eluted with methyl-alpha-D-glucopyranoside. Approximately 9% of the biantennary complex oligosaccharides on SHBG of control men and none of those on SHBG from alcoholic men were fucosylated on the chitobiose core, as determined by chromatography on Lenn culinaris lectin. Galactosylated oligosaccharides were also present on the SHBG fraction as indicated by its interaction with Ricinus communis-I. Approximately 24% of SHBG of alcoholic men and 39% of those on SHBG from control individuals applied to Con-A were retained and could be eluted with methyl-alpha-D-mannopyranoside. Evidence based on the binding on mannoside-eluted SHBG to Con-A, wheat germ agglutinin, and R. communis-I indicated that at least the SHBG in this fraction, from alcoholics or controls, contained two glycosylation sites and that the sites were differentially glycosylated. 相似文献

The 18S rDNA gene of adult worms of Taenia parva found in Genetta genetta in the Iberian Peninsula and larval stages of T. pisiformis from the wild rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) in Tenerife (Canary Islands) were amplified and sequenced. The sequences of the 18S rDNA gene of T. parva (1768 bp) and T. pisiformis (1760 bp) are reported for the first time (GenBank accession nos. AJ555167-AJ555168 and AJ555169-AJ555170, respectively). In 168 alignment positions microsatellites in the 18S rDNA of both taxa were detected for the first time (TGC in T. parva and TGCT in T. pisiformis) and differences in their sequences with different repetition numbers were observed. The use of nucleotide sequences of this gene in the resolution of systematic problems in cestodes is discussed with reference to the systematic status of Taenia spp. and mainly in human taeniids such as T. solium, T. saginata, and Asian human isolates of Taenia. 相似文献
